Well, this is quite common. Re-utilizing material has been an extended strategy everywhere. In Spain I have seen plenty of houses built against a defence wall or using its stones. Sometimes when building new structures they discover these things and have to stop the works.
In some other cases is really sad, not being reused nor conserved. That is the case of the arab wall in Madrid:
