I feel just as bad, if not more so for the man. He obviously loves his cat very much. He is so afraid of losing his companion that he taught his companion to hide.
He lives with that painful fear every single day.

The sad thing was, he made the cat fear so I could take this picture :(
That's not necessarily a bad thing. If you don't continue having the animal perform the "trick" their consistency in performing it on command goes down. (My Coon mix used to count to ten for treats. I'm having to work on getting him to do it consistently again because I stopped reinforcing his training for a long time.)
