Hopefully he was just joking! Scuba diving is a great way to see a part of the world that most people don't get a chance to see! You should definitely rethink getting certified but make sure you do it through a professional dive shop that is highly rated such as PADI 5star or SSI. You can take a discover scuba diving class to see if you like it. It can be done in a couple of hours and they teach you all the basics in a pool and then you get to experience breathing underwater! Rebreathers are coming down in price but are still very expensive and require extensive training so I would stick to the gear listed above and go discover the beautiful part of the world you are missing out on!!

He wasn't joking, even a little bit. He had family who he had taught, and they confirmed his technique.
I am not in a position where I can pursue the sport atm, but it remains a lifelong goal. I appreciate your realistic advice, and will certainly follow it when I do have the opportunity to realize my dream.
Thanks!
