RE: Scuba Dive Gear 101

in #travel7 years ago

God, you're even beautiful wrapped in neoprene =).

I once helped out a disabled Vietnam veteran, who was a dive instructor. He offered to teach me to dive, but mentioned that once I had the gear figured out, he was just gonna push me overboard.

Oddly enough such insanity (which was typical of his approach to everything) somewhat discouraged my pursuit of the sport.

What do you know of relatively new rebreather tech, that allows extraction of necessary oxygen from water, rather than requiring heavy and limited quantity tanks? I find the idea exciting, and hope someday to give it a try.

Thanks!

Hopefully he was just joking! Scuba diving is a great way to see a part of the world that most people don't get a chance to see! You should definitely rethink getting certified but make sure you do it through a professional dive shop that is highly rated such as PADI 5star or SSI. You can take a discover scuba diving class to see if you like it. It can be done in a couple of hours and they teach you all the basics in a pool and then you get to experience breathing underwater! Rebreathers are coming down in price but are still very expensive and require extensive training so I would stick to the gear listed above and go discover the beautiful part of the world you are missing out on!!

He wasn't joking, even a little bit. He had family who he had taught, and they confirmed his technique.

I am not in a position where I can pursue the sport atm, but it remains a lifelong goal. I appreciate your realistic advice, and will certainly follow it when I do have the opportunity to realize my dream.

Thanks!

😊 thanks.

I think it's cool. I want to spend all the time at the bottom anyway.
