As passing by the one pillar gate, there was a stream dividing the temple into 2 pieces.
The streams seem to play very important role in Korean Buddhist Architecture.
The the stream could be interpreted as the boundary between this world and that world.
There are plenty of places in mountain for building Buddhist temples to escape from the streams.
As we know, the stream might be the obstacles in construction of the temples, more efforts and more materials would be needed.
There must be several reasons the streams were near by Buddhist temples except the theory of Buddhism.
In Oriental view of the world, the mountain and the water need to be draw together in the traditional paintings.
So, the mountain without the stream and the water means not good place.
The good mountains must be harmonized with the waters.
In my opinion, the stream was included in the Buddhist Architecture as the result of the conjunction between the Buddhist theory and the traditional view of the beauty.
The stream of Cheoneun-sa temple was so beautiful.
There was a reservoir near by the temple, so the stream and the water seemed the symbol of the abundance.
There was a pavilion on the stream. It was 2 story wooden building.
It was a first time to see the 2 story pavilion over the stream.
Even though Cheoneun-sa temple was not a large temple, the structure and the harmony with the surroundings were so wonderful.

Beautiful location
In India most of the temples were built near a water body or source.

That is interesting to know about mountains and water stream, I have never paid attention if both of them were presenting in Oriental Art. Actually when I saw your yesterday One Pillar Gate of Cheoneun-sa Temple in its Autumn season beauty I decided to do the painting of it. It is just a sketch at current point but once it is finished and of course successfully finished and not destroyed by choosing wrong color tone, I will post. I hope you do not mind that I use as a reference for my painting one of your photograph :)
Beautiful! Would love to visit some day. edit: just read, it is in Korea!
