Purakaunui falls - New Zealand

in #travellast month

Our fourth stop of our Catlins adventures while we were exploring the south island of New Zealand.

The Catlins is such a beautiful stretch of the coast line in southern New Zealand between Balclutha and Invercargill. One side you have stunning beaches and coastline and on the other is dense rainforest with breath taking waterfalls.

So let's continue with our adventure and share with you some photos from Purakaunui falls.

Purakaunui falls is a 10min walk on a nice smooth walking trail.

The trail is suitable for wheelchair access and you can even bring your dog as long as the dog is on a leash.

This is another stunning hike through podocarp and beech forest.

The sound of native birds and rushing water sets the mood as we make our way along the path.

Until we finally make it to the Purakaunui falls viewing platform.

The falls cascade 20 meters high over 3 tiers.

But at this time there wasn't as much water flowing. But it was still impressive.

We had a little explore around the base of the falls. And could just imagine how crazy this water fall would be at peak flow.

Purakaunui falls are the most photographed waterfalls in the Catlins due to its easy accessibility.

Fun fact the Purakaunui falls once featured on a New Zealand postage stamp

On the walk back to the car we found this cool old tree that had been taken over by a vine. So the original tree had died, which left a hollow to climb inside.
My son was so excited to go inside the tree haha.

If you ever explore the Catlins definitely add Purakaunui falls to one of your stops.

Stay tuned for our fifth stop on our Catlins adventure.

Happy travels
