Glenelg Jetty, South Australia.

Glenelg Jetty, South Australia.

Glenelg; a popular seaside destination in Adelaide, South Australia is a hub of activity, especially in the summer with so much to entertain and stimulate people of all ages. Glenelg Beach features a beautiful, wide beach, white sand, attractive parks and playgrounds, a pier which stretches over the water and many cafes and restaurants.

They all combine to create a vibrant and relaxed atmosphere throughout this picturesque venue. It is considered a premium beachside holiday area due to its superb coastline, various events held throughout the year and award-winning indoor and outdoor dining facilities.

The original Glenelg jetty was built in 1859 and it measured 381 meters in length. A lighthouse was erected at the end of the jetty but in 1873 the jetty caught on fire which destroyed it completely.

A hurricane caused havoc in 1948 and the jetty was washed away. The kiosk and aquarium were left intact but they were considered to be unsafe, so they had to be demolished.

The jetty was rebuilt in 1996 but the length was shortened to 215 metres. And a few other changes have been made since then. This lady was trying her luck with a bit of fishing. I did see a large crab in the water below her but he proved to be rather camera shy.

Diving is also popular from the jetty but I'm pretty sure I saw a 'No Diving,' sign somewhere. This is wise advice as there is a lot of activity going on near the jetty such as jet ski-ing, water ski-ing, and pleasure boats coming and going all day long and it would be easy to injure a diver submerged just beneath the surface of the water.

I loved the color and texture of this large rusted, iron hinge attached to the side of the jetty.

If you're not into swimming, ski-ing, fishing or illegal diving, you can enjoy playing hop scotch in the middle of the pier.

Glenelg has average maximum temperatures of 19-25 degrees centigrade and a minimum of 12. Their monthly rainfall is 45mm.

The population of Glenelg is approximately 35,000. The popular beaches are patrolled by the Glenelg Surf Life Savers and people are advised to swim between the flags.

To finish this blog I have added a colourful background to my original photo of a boy getting ready to jump off the pier for my fellow digital art lovers.

Great post. Love those last two shots. Good overall view of pier and edit of diver.

Thanks very much Steven. It's always good to get feedback especially when it is so positive.

I love walking on a long pier like this. Beautiful shots of a scenic location, but hold on a second... what about that last shot? That is a masterpiece pure and simple. Love that one!

Thank you Keith. I'd love to go back to Glenelg one day. It was a quick visit and there is much more to see. Your very encouraging comments are gratefully received my friend. Thank you so much.

I've never been to Adelaide. Better get myself up there one day!

This was my first visit Deb and we only had a day and half to see as much as we could possibly squeeze in that amount of time. It was part of a stopover from a 9 day cruise we did. You'd love Glenelg and I do hope we can get to see more of it one day.

It's nice to see some good weather. I had enough of winter, can't wait to see spring. I miss flowers, nice weather. Enjoy your weather as much as you can.

Some seasons overstay their welcome don't they Erika? Our heat wave is extremely uncomfortable and I just read on the news today that over 140,000 people in Victoria (south of where I live) are without power as the demand for air conditioning has caused the system to crash. I hope they don't have to suffer too long and it is particularly hard on the very young and the elderly.

Thanks so much for your welcome visit my friend. 🌼 🌷 🌼

Unfortunately the weather nowadays is not exactly as it should be. I hope no one gets hurt because of the heat over there.
Have a nice weekend dear Trudee 🌷🌺🌻

So true Erika. The weather is extremely unpredictable these days all over the world. They say this is our hottest summer on record and I hope people will be able to take precautions and drink plenty of water. I worry abut the poor animals who don't have enough shelter from the harsh sun and heat.
Enjoy your weekend too my friend. 🌼 🌷 🌼

You too my friend and stay safe! 🌺🌷🌻

Thank you Erika. Will do. 🌻 🌹 🌻

Thank you kindly @travelfeed Much appreciated.

Oooh, I'll trade you! That looks nice and warm! Nice photos, too. What was that metal loop for, do you know?

It's -20ºC here and next week will be colder. I miss Spain!

You've got yourself a deal my friend. We just have to figure out the logistics. 😊 I do appreciate the way you tactfully refer to that metal loop thingy because I knew it wasn't a hinge when I wrote about it but as you have discovered, my knowledge of rusty metal/iron, loop/hinge/hook objects is dismally poor.

So rather than hazard a guess as to it use, I might refrain from doing so, if that is ok with you.😁

Hiya, just swinging by to let you know that this post made the Honorable Mentions list in today's Travel Digest. If you enjoy steemit worldmap and the manual curation effort we're going through each day, please consider supporting what we do!

You might run into my bro @galenkp eating fish n chips hanging around there.

Well @taraz, if I lived down that way I would make sure to look out for a Taraz 'look a like' at the fish n chip shop and pinch a couple of his chips in the process (after introducing myself first, of course 😊) But this was a quick visit as part of a cruise stop off in Adelaide. I'm hoping it wont be my last as I thought Glenelg was a very picturesque place and must also be a very desirable place to live.

Yeah, I'll probably be there. Can't resist fish and chips. 😁

Hi @galenkp very nice to meet you. Fish and chips and attractive seaside places go hand in hand. I take it you live in Glenelg? If so, You are indeed fortunate. I live at a beautiful seaside village in Redcliffe, Q'ld and I don't usually visualize living anywhere else, but Glenelg comes close.......very close.

If I could resist fish and chips at the beach I'd take myself to therapy to develop an addiction for it! 😂 Fortunately I love it a d can't resist it, so no therapy required.

I've spent a lot of time in and around Brisbane so am familiar with Redcliffe. Once had a very lovely BBQ at Sutton's Beach Park. It's a nice spot! Yes, Glenelg is nice too and there's a lot of positive development and improvements taking place as well. Has been for a while really. Redcliffe is less busy than Glenelg, at least it was when I was there last, and I think at this juncture in my life that would suit me nicely. It's doubtful I'd stay in Adelaide on retirement and QLD or TAS is on the hit list...Vastly different of. Ourselves, but equally attractive.

We have friends who live half way between Yandina and Coolum Beach (Yandina Creek) right at the top of a peak with views over the hills and all the way out to sea...Spectacular part of the world. A bit further north than you are but within easy strikng-distance for visits. That's the thing about Australia, so many awesome places to be. It makes being 10/10 present no matter where a person is very easy to do right?

Hmmmm! I haven't heard of 'Fish and Chip' withdrawals but I guess you'd be the one to tell us if it does exist should you ever deprive yourself for long enough to authenticate it. 😁 Somehow, I don't think we are going to any the wiser. 🤓

A BBQ at Suttons Beach?????? You didn't think our Fish n Chips were to up to your expectations????? 😊 The aroma from the Pavillion at Sutton's Beach smelled pretty good the last time I walked past it.

Yes, Redcliffe is less populated than Glenelg but the area is a lot smaller. Well, it appears that way, because we can only see one beach at a time, whereas, Glenelg Beach seems to stretch for miles.

You're right. Australia contains so many worthwhile places to visit. You'd have be traveling full time for an extended period of time to see all that it has to offer. Wouldn't that be nice?
