Common Tree Fern, Cyathea dregei Kunze in the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa.
Accepted name is Cyathea dregei Kunze found near mountain streams, seepage grasslands along the lower areas in the mountains where we have seen them. These photographs were taken near Highmoor Malote Nature Reserve in the Drakensberg.
These always remind me of woman water carriers going down to the waters edge. A sturdy Tree Fern strong bark protects them from winter fires and frost. Adding charm to areas with water, some do plant into their gardens near swimming pools for added decor, remember it is not fast growing like the Australian Tree Fern.
The common South African tree fern or grassland tree fern (in contrast to its relative, the forest tree fern). It is commonly known as the gewone boomvaring in Afrikaans. Not endangered they pop up around the next corner when hiking in many areas of South Africa where soil is moist.
Photography taken during the Spring when new shoots are uncurling showing the light brown scales, new fronds grow every Spring crowning the tree fern with lush green leaves above the dark trunk.
Tree Ferns grow in various climate ranges from temperate to tropical, areas with dry winters and wet summers, all they need is to be near streams, they don't mind full sun. They stand up to tough conditions with little ill effect to the plant, spore has been collected with testing world wide where they are known to continue in a variety of conditions, only drawback is they are slow growing.
Uses: Gerstner (1941) reports that the Zulu use unspecified parts of the plant as ingredients in infusions known as inembe which are taken regularly during pregnancy to ensure easy childbirth, whilst dried roots are used as anthelmintics. The Xhosa use the plant as an infusion known as isikhomakhoma which is taken to counter the effects of witchcraft (Hutchings 1996). https://plants.jstor.org/stable/10.5555/al.ap.flora.sffa000170049500002

Thought for Today: A family is like a forest, when you are outside it is dense, when you are inside you see that each tree has its place. ~ African Proverb

It's good to plant trees, but if you can't plant them then looking at them is just as good

Trees are very helpful in the environment . It can really prevent from having landslide or disaster . This post is really informative . :) Thank you for sharing @joanstewart :)
These tree ferns look so different growing in the open here, quite unlike the lush tree ferns that grows in the shade of bigger trees.
Love the African proverb, so very true!
Hi!! @joanstewart! It has been a long while! These ferns look beautiful. I have seen a form of them in California if I am not mistaken! It was great to come by your post!
And I will definitely have to check out that #kryptonia after I get off work!
I haven't see this kind of three. Not bad anyway. kryptonia id blogjeremiah

Trees create life for every other creature in the world. Save trees then it will save mother earth. kcherukuri from kryptonia.
Gosh, those are interesting. We have nothing like that in Florida, but we do have ferns that grow from the trunks of palm trees.
I haven't seen this type of fern trees before.
nice post my friends
They are some crazy trees, I love them
Interesante, este helecho y su entorno nos muestran que áfrica no solo es una zona desértica o árida, hay variedad de ecosistemas. id kryptonia @reyos69
Those Cyathea dregei Kunze are some funky looking trees - in a good way :-)
It amazes me how many natural cures can come from plants and trees.
Great photography. upvoted Kryptonia @deathly_horror
Interesting article! As always a bit wiser after reading, thank you!
The tree fern looks very strange. In our woods is fern a herb, it has no trunk.

Trees 🌲 Are Important As Water For Humans Because They Are Like Purifier For Air ✌
What beautiful ferns ... the most wonderful thing about nature is that each plant is different and makes each natural corner curious and worthy of being photographed, commented and shared.

Trees are wonderful things. I have used them in many ways for shade, landscaping, fire, building, etc etc. I d not think life as we live it could not be without trees. Thanks for the post.
