TreeTuesday - Fighting for our native trees!

After a few days of being offline (and a lot of comments to reply), I want to share the beautiful tree formation I have found this past weekend. I think it is perfect for this #TreeTuesday!

This is the common oak (Quercus robur)

These trees are placed in the riverbank in the center region of Portugal (Águeda).
Although, its habitat is threatened by the invasive Acacia dealbata, which a group of volunteers (me included) went to control. ( I will prepare a detailed post in the future)

The place is almost cleared (we weren't the first volunteers in the area), but there are still thousands of Acacia dealbata seeds on the ground, ready to germinate.

The photo was shot under another native tree/ bush - Laurus nobilis, and damn, I felt so good under it!! Maybe it's the positive vibes of our native vegetation!!

This is my submission to TreeTuesday initiated by @old-guy-photos to share some of our most precious (or unusual) trees!

Lovely photo!

Thank you!! How are you, my dear?! Still good weather to go to the beach there?!

it's important to preserve the biggest diversity possible of trees....i don't understand a lot about the issue but I think the nature's importance is based on it's diversity...all the best

You are right about diversity, that is a problem when some species become invasive. It dominates and bye bye biodiversity! invasoras.pt is a great webpage with tons of info on invasive plants in Portugal!

Trees, great gift to the world.

i never get sick of your plant patriotism <3 love it!

Plant patriotism!! Ahah...but I'm right! Our native vegetation is way better than introduced one!! Same happens in other regions ;)

This looks so much like Southern California

Being also in the Mediterranean region I guess it must have similarities, and both have problems with invasive species.

not only that. We have oak borers and other beetles impacting the mature trees. Have been loosing lots of them! So sad!

Oh, yes, I've heard!! Ecosystems are unbalanced...it's a pity indeed!

Are you dealing with a lot of diseases as well? Or mainly takeover by some invasives? And how is the removal done? mechanical or by use of herbicide?

As far as I know, our oak trees face some diseases, but not affecting them much. Guess the worst is having scarce areas of oak groves!

We remove it (invasive plants) by pulling the young individuals and by peeling the bark. Thanks for asking, I think that will deserve a post in the coming days (probably next treetuesday)!

Yes. It does. This is my big beef with the native plant people here. They are so pro using herbicide!! Drives me crazy!
