Watching the hero and the villain develop along parallel lines that eventually converged added a layer of depth to the entertaining story. It was one of many unexpected aspects. Neither Galavant or King Richard were solidly good or evil. Galavant was mostly decent but also self-centered and occasionally obnoxious. King Richard ordered executions but was insecure and wanted to be liked. You ended up rooting for Richard just as much as Galavant and felt sympathy for him. That's not usual for the bad guy in standard fairy tales.
