Grandpa Grandma & Grandson Day

My 10 year old grandson Quincy came for the weekend.

We repaired the rider mower today.

  • Replaced the carb and the deck engage cable.
  • Maybe it's a guy thing, but time for this young man to learn a bit about engines. What does it take for an engine to run? Gas, air & spark make the explosion that moves the piston that moves the crankshaft that does the work. This mower is about 12 years old and it was having a bit of trouble when it got in tall grass. It's like it would starve for gas, so you would have to choke it to get it back up to speed, but not too long or it would flood a bit. haha We put the new carb on, cleaned the air filter and got the dead frog out of the gas tank and guess what? She runs like a champ. I took it right into some taller than the hood grass in 2nd gear and you could hear it working, but I didn't have to clutch it or mess with the choke. Wow! Nice!
  • Also time for him to learn to mow. We went over all the basics; clutch/brake pedal, steering, starting, engaging deck, ... ... it's actually pretty dry so the grass didn't need mowed, but the lane hadn't been mowed for awhile, so this was his task. He got a bit nervous the first trip out and came back. We went over everything again. Took a little break. Then he cowboyed up and mowed all the way down the lane, out on the county road a bit and then all way back to the house. (The lane is 1/4 mile) WTG Quincy! Proud of you man!

Grandma got supper ready. She did mac & cheese, peas and boiled the sausage a bit so we could grill them. I don't know the proper word for these sausage. They are U shaped, about 2" thick and probably 1 1/2 foot total length. We found them at the Amish store for about $1 a piece. I think John Morell's are closer to $5 each and aren't nearly this good! I was the only one who could eat a whole one. They each have left overs.

We tried watching a movie-on-demand, but Dish locked up about 1/2 way through it. ::shrug:: The Congo - it was about a guerrilla that learned to talk using sign language and then AI turned that into an actual voice.

Then it got dark and Quincy wanted to shoot off some fireworks Uncle Dave had bought for him. (That's my oldest boy).

In Q we trust.

What an awesome memory to have! I hope he never forgets it.

I have many fond memories of visiting my grandpa here at this farm and learning all kinds of cool guy stuff. He's already asking this morning if there's anything else he can mow! haha

FLASH BACKS to many good memories of grandpa " laying out the land" of his giant yard on the farm and then turning me loose. Round and round carefully waiting until the precise moment to crank the wheel hard right ( or left ) to cut the perfect corner. FYI as for lawn mower try running higher octain gas or getting Morrso boaster and adding a tad to gas. todays gas don;t burn worth a crap in older mowers

That sounds like a very fun time. Especially getting him to mow the lawn up and back a couple of times. At the age of 10, that's pretty promising right there. Along with the repairs.

The old dead frog in the gas tank ploy, eh. Those frogs are crafty, and dedicated, apparently.

Those looks like some mean fireworks, too. Great shot of him shooting off the one while it's still in his hand. It looks like he's taking aim at something on the other end of it. I can't remember if I've asked this, but are all fireworks legal in Missouri? Most?

Here we're lucky if they'll let you use sparklers. That doesn't stop people from getting the projectile fireworks, though. Someone was shooting those over the side of our house and somewhere in back. It's great fun for a while, but after 10 pm on a work night with an early wake up call, not so great.

How in the world does a frog get in a gas tank? no idea! haha

We have big fireworks stores on the state line. Not sure how profitable those will be now that Iowa just legalized fireworks. I think pretty much anything goes. Those places have it all.

Nice living in the country. I can see a few fireworks as late as I want, but don't have to hear them.

That's exactly what I was thinking. We live on about a quarter acre, which is nice because we can be pretty far away from the next door neighbor. But on occasions like this, we're still way too close. Every morning I have my office door open to let it cool off in here and without fail, I get to hear everyone's conversations as they go to work or school. They're pretty loud, anyway, but still. Too close.

One of these days we might make it farther out into the country. I feel like I've already taken my wife far enough out of the big town she was used to growing up in that to take her anymore would completely crush her sociable spirit. :)
