The time during this year that I did not spend traveling or having cafe-pop ups with Ambrosia, I have been living at my cabin an hour away from the capital of Norway. It is beautiful for sure, surrounded by the fjord and mountains, a magical and quiet place.
Neither me or my partner in crime, love and adventures have a car at the moment, so we have to take the bus or walk for 6 km to the store. There is no restaurants, at least with vegan food in the closest populated area, so I get much time to try new creative ways of cooking at least!
But we do spend some days in the capital, Oslo, occasionally. And then it feels extra special to be able to go out to my favorite restaurants and get served fancy, vegan food without having to walk a mile or cook for and hour!
So I thought I'd share with you my go-to vegan restaurants in Oslo. If you or someone you know are located around Oslo, make sure to check these resturants out for some mouth-watering and tasteful experiences!
#1 Loving hut @ Bjerregards Gate | 100% vegan restaurant. |
I am not joking when I say that this is one of our favorite restaurants in the world.
A small, not to fancy place, with the most fancy and amazing vegan food ever. Their menu ranges from Asian, to junk food, to fully raw dishes. They have awesome main dishes, desserts and smoothies, as well as teas and other sweets.
I have brought several non-vegan friends and family members here and everyone has been overwhelmed and surprised of the tastes and presentation vegan food can have.
Dishes you should try:
BBQ melody Is a wonderful and creative melody of dishes on a plate - Asian BBQ-marinated vegan meat that is SO tasty, noodles, spring rolls filled with awesomeness, a mixed salad with the best dressing among more.
Wonton soup A spicy Asian vegetable soup with wonton/dumplings. Perfect for cold days, or when you want something spicy and warming!
Summer rolls & Spring rolls Both are among the best I have had.
Or just try everything on their menu; Wok, spicy burger, not-dog! You will not be disappointed.
#2 Funky fresh foods | 100% vegan restaurant. |
Funky and fresh is exactly what this place is. They focus on fancy, vegan and gluten free food, cakes and drinks.
It is located inside the design and architecture house in Oslo, with a river view and is a medium up class-place.
This place is a little bit expensive, so before we in the Ambrosia crew moved to different places, this was the restaurant we went out to to celebrate or when we wanted to be a little bit more fancy!
Dishes you should try:
Sharing tapas! A wonderful and creative tapas filled with so many awesome small dishes!
Burgers & Cakes They have a variety of raw cakes and burgers all worth a try!
#3 NordVegan. | 100% vegan restaurant. |
Nordvegan opened this year and is a really good restaurant. Their dishes is made in collaboration with a Michelin-starred chef, that might say enough.
I only got the chance to check out this place twice, but I just heard good things and read good reviews about NordVegan. It is quite expensive, around 200 NOK for a big portion.
Dishes you should try:
- Lasagna! They have the best vegan lasagna I ever tasted, and I therefor ordered it both the times I was there.
#4 SudØst. | A few really good vegan options. |
SudØst is a very fancy and up class European / Asian restaurant.
They have a lot of no-no stuff on their menu, but their vegan options are AMAZING!
Dishes to try:
Pad Thai They have the best vegan pad Thai that I ever had.
Chocolate cake I cant think about this cake without craving it! Dark chocolate cake with raspberry purè and coconut Sorbet!
Some more places worth to mention:
It is finally starting to open a lot of vegan places in Oslo, and restaurants offering a vegan option is becoming normal at least most places. Here are a few more places worth to check out:
Bislett Kebab.
is the first kebab chain in Norway, and they are now starting to focus on plant based! They have vegan kebab meat in roll or pita, or a kebab pizza with vegan cheese! They even have 50% off all vegetarian food on tuesdays!
Apsorn Thai @ Torshov.
Is an non vegan restaurant in Oslo, but they do have a good understanding of what vegan is.
They have 2 vegetarian dishes on their menu that can be veganised if you ask them (because of fish-sauce.) My friend just told me that they can make all the dishes on their menu vegan and with tofu in stead of fish or meat. Just remember to ask them to make it fully vegan without fish sauce!
I recommend to check out the app vegan Norway to find vegan food in Norway's biggest cities!
Recipe: Simple vegan stir-fry!
Serves 2 people, double or triple the recipe for a huge stir-fry. :)
After showing you all this fancy restaurant food, I thought it should be in is place to show you how easy you can make it yourself!
Base:
- Tofu, 1 package.
- Rice.
Veggies:
- 1/2 small Broccoli.
- 1 Onion, red or white.
- 1 Chili.
- 1/2 garlic.
- Ginger. Thin fingerlenght.
Topping:
- 1 Handful cashew nuts.
- 2 Tbs. sesame seeds.
-Lime
-1 Add a frying pan to medium heat and set a casserole with water to boil.
- 2 Chop your tofu in cubes. I preffer big cubes, but cut them how you wish! Add them to a bowl and shake in 4 tbs. corn flour, some soy sauce, salt and pepper.
- 3 Toast your cashews and sesame seeds in the pan for a minute or two, and set them aside in a small bowl.
- 4 Fry the tofu on medium high heat for about 10 minutes or until golden. Meanwhile, chop your veggies:
The Chili, ginger and garlic should be finely chopped, while the Broccoli and Onion can be in big bouquets/half moons. If you use some other veggies like zucchini, this should be in quite big chunks to keep in crunchy. When it is time for chopping veggies, I like to get started with the rice.
- 5 Add the tofu to a plate and sprinkle over the nuts and seeds.
- 6 Rinse out your frying pan and set it back on the stove on high heat. Start off with frying your ginger, chili and garlic for a short minute before adding in the rest of your veggies.
Stir fry the veggies for about 5 minutes, until they are a bit golden but still fresh and crunchy!
Add some rice to your plate, then the veggies and top with the tofu and some soy-sauce + a little lime juice.
Love and light, Emilie / @umulius - Ambrosia crew.

It looks like there are quite a few vegan options in Oslo. This is a great news! I wanted to visit it for so long and now I know I won't be starving. I was afraid that they would mostly be serving fish.
Loving hut is also in Prague and I loved the meals. They were very tasty and fresh. All the restaurants that you mentioned sound great. I will make sure to list them all when I go to Oslo.
Your review is very nicely written.
Oh, and I like your recipe too. Something like that is my go to meal when I'm out of inspiration and want to eat something quick and delicious.
Thank you for sharing and have a lovely weekend!
Hi, @delishtreats
As I mentioned we are overwhelmed seeing the amount of vegan options popping up in Oslo. I remember being vegan here a couple of years ago, having to travel to the neighbor country Sweden just to get vegan butter!
Now it seems like you can get pretty much anything here. I even saw a vegan fish and chips pop-up!
Mmmmm when you mention loving hut in Prague. I spent one day in Prague this summer, returning from a festival and back to Scandinavia. When we found this two story building with both a vegan cafeteria, a small vegan groceries shop and a loving hut on the second floor. We almost decided to stay in Prague for some days just to eat! Is it the same one you are referring to?
I'm glad that you liked our recipe! If you come to Oslo I'd be more than happy to recommend you some more places. 😊
The app Vegan Norway is really good btw http://www.vegannorway.com/
I think it's generally challenging to eat vegan in Europe. It's not that bad but also not super easy. I'm happy to hear that you see such a progress over the years.
Yes, it's this one! LOL! They have a couple of them in Prague but I was referring to exactly this one. I'm so glad that you liked it. Now you know where to go when you will be in Prague next time. Actually, there are quite a few vegan places there now. And the scene keeps growing which makes me happy.
Have a lovely weekend!
Haha, funny that it is the exact same one! I cant wait to go back and spend some days in Prauge just to try out new vegan food.
Two of us in the Ambrosia crew decided we should go on a trip to a city where we can get a lot of vegan inspiration. This time, we decided for Berlin. But next time, it might be Prague!
If you are struggling to find vegan food while traveling in europe, I reccomend checking out happy cow. I find it so great that I am in the middle of writing a steemit post about it. ;) happycow.net
Much love and light to you, @delishtreats! :) 🌱
You will love Berlin. I've been there recently and I struggled to choose a restaurant to go to. There are vegan places around each corner. It's soooo cool! Let me know how you'll like it.
I'm using happy cow already and also checking some blogs and reviews for inspiration :) I will check out your post!
Sending hugs to you! :)
Yes, I love Berlin! I have actually visited several times just to eat. So much vegan food! 😂😂
❤️
Hahaha, I'm the same! We went there just to eat :)

It is actually really good to be vegan in Oslo these days. Check out this app if you decide to go @neymarth11; http://www.vegannorway.com/ :)
Those restaurants look like really nice places, I would have loved to see the photos of the place. It uses to be quite a struggle for vegans to get restaurants where they can eat, with assurance but that seems to be changing now. It's a great one!
That recipe sure is simple, easy to prepare and it looks delicious too!...
I love what you guys do at Ambrosia, its amazing!
They are very good resturants for sure, @audreybits! Do you mean photos of the different resturants, or a specific one of them?
I am so happy about it becoming easier to eat vegan food out on resturants, even though it some times still can be a struggle..
When I travel, I use the webpage HappyCow to find vegan resturants and health shops around. It works amazing, I think I will start adding the places I find there, just to make it easier for other vegans as well! Did you try happycow? :)
Thank you so much for the kind words, it really makes us happy and gives motivation and inspiration. We appreciate it! 🌱❤️
Photos of different restaurants if you can😊
Haven't tried happy cow, actually, I am just hearing about it. Maybe I should look that up.
Oh, i am so glad that my little support somehow motivates you, i really am glad to hear that!🤗❤
howdy from Texas ambrosiacafe! this is such an interesting and informative post. The restaurant reviews are amazing because of the details given and the stir-fry recipe looks wonderful and tasty and easy!
You guys have a mobile diner or something and where do you go with it?
Howdy from Scandinavia, @janton! Thanks for the kind words, we are happy you found our post good, and also that you like our recipe! It is one of my favorite dishes that are healthy, quick to make and feels like a fancy resturant meal.
We have pop up cafes on events such as music gatherings and festivals among others. We build the cafe ourselfs most of the times using things we find in nature, like we did here
We are dreaming about getting a food truck, and maybe even start up a place somewhere in the world when we wish to root. But for now we are living our dream of creating a traveling resturant focusing on vegan food, healing herbs and art. Still being a 100% non-profit cafe, since we use all our profits on equipment for the cafe. Before we can go to the biggest festivals, we have to spend a lot of time working for free, and stay focused on building up the cafe while thinking realistic! 🌱
