I was surprised to learn how resilient to cold temps chickens are. Some1 told me they can handle up to -20F - Thanks for sharing. I can't wait until I have either birds on my land or I'm on someone else's land who has birds.

My older neighbour told me, that is why you eat chicken broth if you are ill, because the chicken is such a strong animal, it makes you better when you are weak. Interesting thought...

If not, how long can you be away from the homestead without worrying about your bird's wellbeing? Do you have a neighbor or friend who can come and assist?

Hmmm....... The chickens have minds of their own, I think they do love the attention you give them and oh those huge ice blocks ,they make the sea look so gloomily attractive. Thanks ma for sharing.
I also embarrassed myself by almost laughing my head off. An embarrassment, or was it? No it wasn't at all. You were just doing what you love doing, and that is so sweet.
All these ice, where do they come from. Is it the extremely low temperature that freezes the body of water. It's just so amazing.

The ice forms on the surface of the ocean water in our little cove when the temperatures stay below 0 for many days in a row. Then, because of the rising and falling tides, the ice layer breaks up and looks like these floating ice pieces. I went out today at the very low tide, there are pieces of ice all over the beaches today, left there from the lowering tide.

I showed you how you can get a coat for your camera. Camouflage even. The animals wont even know you are near.

We have around 35 hens I believe, but I don't know the exact number eeeek bad chicken mama lolol :) Getting 20-24 eggs a day <3 <3 Good gals to be laying so much all winter :) :) We don't use artificial light.
Those are pretty good layers. I think it is cruel to the chickens to use artificial light...

Oh! This reminded me of Penelope the Chicken that was rescued by a very kind lady in New York. This Chicken was in an extremely horrible condition at slaughter place where many chickens were/are slaughtered every year for a religious ceremony. There is a video also about the amazingly miraculous recovery of Penelope.
You are so kind and it is such a beautiful sight to see you and your chickens. You have such a kind voice. I really enjoyed this.

Actually your post prompted me to check out for any updates on Penelope. The lady who rescued her has apparently taken in more chickens with special needs and is going to create a sanctuary for special needs chickens since she cannot accommodate them in her space in Brooklyn, NY. God bless her precious soul.
