Another instance where the public is bearing the cost, while gains are being privatized.

@doitvoluntarily have you read "War is a Racket" by Smedley Butler? It might have been written a while ago, but he offers some interesting suggestions to remove the pecuniary incentives from war :

"To summarize: Three steps must be taken to smash the war racket.

  1. We must take the profit out of war.
  2. We must permit the youth of the land who would bear arms to decide whether or not there should be war.
  3. We must limit our military forces to home defense purposes.

To anyone interested, it's a short read (more like an essay) with themes that are still very much pertinent.
