Good luck finding something that's not too soul destroying.
As you say... shouldn't be too bad short term and only for a few months hopefully.
It's possible to steem in ur spare time - I did it for most of my first year. You just have to scale it back for a while.
Britain's not so bad, honestly. Just damp.
