Dreaming

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

During my life, I've had plenty of time to dream of different things.

I've dreamt of different jobs, of women and men, dragons and magic, owning and traveling, thinking and moving, living and dying. Very Finnish.

I have reached only few things I've dreamt of. At least few of the things I remember I had dreamt of - who knows how many things were in my dreams until I got them and then I just got used to it? It would be naive to think life would be amazing happiness ever after you get the thing you dream about.

In the end, you might even dislike it.

You seen all the comedy movies making fun of marriages and divorces?

"I see you are no stranger to pain"

"I've been married... twice"

I hope most marriages start from the dreams together. Then in the end, it turns out the dreaming didn't make it work after all. Luckily we are able to divorce and hopefully few of us ever need to get a divorce!
And no, I'm not divorcing my wife.

Having dreams is seen as a standard. If someone doesn't have any dreams in their life, it might be considered odd. What are they trying to achieve in life? Nothing? Not having dreams might be seen as someone is not believing in a better tomorrow - that things could improve.

Life is joy and pain and then adjusting to them. What brings joy to us today might not do it tomorrow, what is painful for us now might soon feel better.

It is said that instead of running after goals we should learn to enjoy the moment. If our lives circle around the dreams we are supposed to have, how easy it is to enjoy the present? You need a bigger TV, faster car, thinner spouse, smarter children, better job, better life, better you..

Luckily these two do can coexist. You can dream and still enjoy the present, with all the small details of life which you would otherwise pass.

That's my dream now. To enjoy and to dream.

I'm not sure if I'm doing either of them as I should.

I'd also enjoy getting few million euros, becoming a female nude model photographer, a new camera, a bigger house, a better car, bunch of pretty women to spoil me, world peace, pizza...

Sort:

I dream of the impossible ...like beeing dinaris targaryen or having an awsome set of hair. The rest is not dreams ... but just goals. :)

Ha, that's one way to approach it. I'm calling all of them dreams, because I'm quite sure I'll never find my dream house, get my dream job.. etc. :)
But you have a better attitude than I have!

...hmmm...I guess if it is doable its a goal. :) ...food for thought..some years ago I made some pancakes at work (homeclass)...and my coworker had some. She said it was the best pancakes she ever had in her life. So when we made a new batch a year later they werent as good. They couldn't be. She already had the best pancakes in her life....whatever pancakes follow will never again be the best. :)

I would like to think I taste every pancake anew and just wonder what tastes will this new batch bring.

There is a big difference between wants and needs. :) If you look a bit closer u will realise most of the wants are not even our own...but smth u got sold on a billboard. :3

PS: i wish to be a famous book and food critic....id eat in restaurants all day long while reading. I think this is the perfect job....but alas as everything....after a while all goes stale and its time for a new batch. Thats the whole point.

Not completely related to this but.. I once made a Finnish dessert for exchange students. I told them I'm in the perfect situation in which they do not know what the dessert should taste like.

It might be good or bad, this will be the most delicious one of the specific dessert they've ever had.

You can be the first one only once.

If one needs to learn how to enjoy a moment, means they are not truly enjoying it. Enjoyment has to come by itself. Enjoying a dream is a good start. But we too often dream of enjoying and struggle with reaching that feeling.

I can see your point, but I do not completely agree with you. Sometimes we are stuck somewhere, not being able to enjoy the moment and we need to learn how to enjoy again.

The word might be a bit wrong. You don't need to learn how to enjoy, but you need to learn how you can enjoy the moment again - learning to focus on the moment instead of the future or the past.

The only problem with dreams is expecting they will magically come true without preparation and work.

becoming a nude female photographer

Sex change operations are expensive but no one is stopping you from taking photos naked.

That is the common mistake. Letting go of the dreams without putting enough work to reach them.

However, what happens if you reach the dream and notice it's not what you wanted?

Hmm, maybe I should add the word "model" somewhere in between.

Most dreams are not what we want when realised otherwise we would be happy upon reaching them. No car, house or wife is ever good enough, we always want more. That's why they say be present in the moment because it is really the only place one can ever be satisfied fully because when in the now, there is no expectation of the future nor baggage from the past, meaning all that is, is there now. If that makes sense.

Suomi mainittu! Torilla tavataan!

Suomi on jääkiekon maailmanmestari!

That sounds like a nice dream to me. I see dreams and goals as a direction to put my energy. When you get too invested in the outcome, you can never be content, because when you reach the goal, you find you don’t know what to do with yourself...if you even reach the goal. Expectations stress us out, making it harder to reach the goal.

You are in a good place!

One big thing I didn't really take up enough on this post was the "you can never be content"-thing. I've seen too many people who get too obsessed with their goals and dreams so in the end, even if they reach their goals, they are not content.

This made me think of Hemulen in the Moomins. At first, he collected stamps - until he finally got the perfect stamp collection. He got depressed and someone mentioned "Instead of being a collector, he is now an owner - which is not even nearly as fun".

Hahah. I read the last part and I think you should just keep dreaming. But pizza seems reasonable, go order it! Lol

Oh my wife can't eat pizza right now, so I can't get any pizza myself for the next few days...

Then it's time to sneak out and go to Domino's.

Pizza sounds great.

Pizza tastes even better it sounds, buddy ;)

I reached only one goal, and that is nice family. I should be grateful to have that much.

Well I hope you are grateful for it, then :)

Yup, my folks truly enjoy my company hehehe.

There is no dream house, there is no dream car, in fact there is no dream place.
A saying I picked up a while back, it may be famous, I remember not, but it has always served me well. "No matter where you go, no matter how far, you always take you with you. You can be happy in Barbados or miserable in Spain, all the same it is down to you"
I think I just made that quote up, or at least adapted what I remember reading.
Have a fantastic day my friend.

Thank you, trying to have one. Hope you have a fantastic day too :)

Dreams change as reality changes. I think it's good to focus on what you want, don't want, makes you happy or miserable as you live along. Cheers to living true to your philosophy! :)

That's a very good point. I see that there is no one right way to live mostly because times change, the reality changes. Everything related to us adjusts to fit what the reality currently is :)

Thanks for the comment!

Yes, people do dream and that's a good thing of course. The problem is, that very often people don't really know what their true dreams are.. When they don't know, they start ''standard dreaming'' of things like a huge house, awesome job, big salary, fast car etc. If these are not their true dreams, getting these things won't make them happy and something will still be missing. In addition to that, false dreams keep people very busy and they never have time to think about what they really want.

I wish I had a true dream.

I've been trying to think if I have one, but haven't come up with anything too special. This kind of sucks.

I hope you know your trued dream :)

I know some of my true dreams, yes. I'm also pursuing them but I'm also pursuing some of the "standard" dreams even though I don't know for sure if these things will actually make me happy. The important thing is that my true dreams and my "standard" dreams don't nesessarily exclude each other and both of them bring me comfort. I think there is nothing wrong with combining :)

I love your cat! <3
