Her fingertips bleed as she feeds the earth, but she continues working. The dusty ground surrenders to her shovel, to her hands, to be mixed together with rich compost.
No, she wears no gloves. It’s a small plot of land, but it’s hers, and she came to bring life, not to hide from the process. She will feel it all against her skin.
A worm peeks aboveground, his body still halfway buried. She laughs, speaking gently before scooping his section and flipping it over.
“Go home, little thing, there will be new roots for you soon.”
She thinks of him months later, when the young tomato plants show their fruit for the first time. They’ve already dropped a few leaves, a feast for what lives below.
She pokes the oldest one deeper into the dirt and adds a few drops of water to send it on its way.

Your #Freewrite captured the feeling when I dig in the soil. Thanks for reminding me. Now, I just need to return to the garden.
I know I'm late but here is your friendly reminder about today's prompt: https://steemit.com/freewrite/@mariannewest/day-133-5-minute-freewrite-thursday-prompt-the-attic
You're perfectly on time...I wrote this one late!
You are very welcome. I'm happy to give this reminder!
This was so short and sweet. I am wondering what will be that worm like now.
He must be very happy!
A sweet gardening experience :)
The feel of nature is better than any other feel in the world
I love the smell of freshly turned dirt, and I enjoy visiting with the things that I plant and watching them grow. 👍
💚
Good write-up skill @ellievallie, can't believe you write this in five minutes. You must be reading quite a number of novels previously
I definitely did a bit of editing after!
