Now You Don’t
Short story by Josie2214
Art is, like magic, the science of manipulating symbols, words, or images, to achieve changes in consciousness. [..] Indeed, to cast a spell, is simply to spell, to manipulate words, to change people’s consciousness. And I believe that this is why an artist or writer is the closest thing in the contemporary world that you are likely to see to a Shaman. -// Alan Moore
It all started rather innocently. Some of the more active ones of the primal society, the ones with seemingly overflowing prana and an over-active imagination, started to play. Play with shapes, with emotion. Trying to make sense of the raw reality around and within, and aiming to convey that sense to others – the ones that seemed like they just might have the capacity to hear, to perceive, to take in. Thus, illusions came about. Illusions of understanding and being understood.
Sounds formed and took up meaning. And there was word. Words clung together and brought about consciousness altering states. The ones most capable in the new arts of spelling were deemed wise men, or wizards, for short. And spells were cast left and right. With no measure to counter those spells other than more spells. More complicated, more elaborate spells, with seals and signatures, and compounded magical force of as many magicians as could be gathered. The compound will of the majority of wizards was called democracy.
Elaborate spells, complex crafts derived from spells upon spells and the compound mana of generations upon generations of wizards made about a peculiar reality, full of marvels and menace. A spectacular play to behold, indeed. If only the wizards had not been so accustomed of being who they were and doing what they do, that it seemed mundane, tedious, bleak. Not at all magical. Throwing a random hex or a blessing at a passing neighbour, mindlessly.
Id say you are quite handy at slinging some words around yourself ;) Well done.
Thank you for your kind words. :)
I've always had this irrational fear around writing, even though I've always known that that is what I want to do. I've been afraid of failure AND success, which is the weirdest feeling.
This waking up early thing (even though I did fail to keep up the streak on the weekend) is helping me a lot, to be more.. me, essentially.
No I totally get the fear of success AND failure. In business, I saw it often. Obviously no one wants to fail, but also they never tried as hard as they could because then if they did not succeed they could comfort themselves with the idea that they never gave it their BEST shot anyways. I can be quite tricky!
