Yes, it's definitely a different kind of skill set. Do you write with the end in mind first, or the whole idea, or just make it up as you go?
I have a general idea of how I want to go, and where I want it to end up, and a general feeling for what KIND of story it will be (scifi/sad/hardcore/comedy/whatever) but the journey itself is pretty wide open. You just kind of write without thinking too much about it, and when you do that you can put yourself more in the character's shoes and write about what he's seeing or feeling or thinking.
