Making the Transition from Youtube to Steemit

in #youtube7 years ago

Taking the leap to Steemit.com is quickly rewarding with a little persistence, humor, and community spirit. Here are the benefits realized and challenges overcome in the first several weeks. Good luck on your fulfilling journey !!

FROM VIDEO TO PICTURE/NARRATIVE/ MEME
When I started Steemit, I was still relying a lot on video links for the main content. I quickly learned this was a mistake as most Steemit viewers expect posts developed around some combo of photos, narrative, charts/graphs, and clever memes/graphics. Getting in the swing of it took a week, and my formatting is still relatively primitive, but I find this new social media more engaging. Yes, in many ways it was easier on youtube to get a few thoughts together, hit record on the camera, and punch out a video. But on Steemit I find the process of composing a story is more rewarding and quickly becomes MORE PERSONAL as the combo of pictures, words, and other images, when effectively composed, tells a more intimate story.

MORE INTERACTION / FEEDBACK
I feel like it's been easier to get rolling and meet people on Steemit. Maybe that is because the community is smaller, or because new people are frantic to make connections, or that the space is evolving so quickly and everyone is sharing info about how to navigate and properly curate the community. Although the follower numbers are somewhat fluff (and not all people that are truly engaged), the responses to posts, comments, and replies have been more numerous and vigorous than what I experienced on youtube. I think as the format matures it will be even easier to maintain our presence long-term. Also, compared to youtube, the extensive trolling, negativity, and bickering is largely absent.

INDEPENDENT SPIRIT / CRYPTO REWARDS
There is a strong streak of independent spirit and authenticity on Steemit which is refreshing. Posts about joys and passions from travel to technology, from creating to investing, and unique perspectives about finding one's own path in life. Overall, the community is positive and focused on a sense of growth and building each other up. Yes, there are a few tacky posts about superficial culture or celebrity gossip crap, but those are a minimum and don't get much traction. And of course, many are here due to their desire to be sustainable outside a corrupt and daily degrading system of government fueled by oligarchic funds, exploitative debt, and ever-growing media monopolies!

So keep tuning up your posts and exploring more outlets for your creativity. There is plenty of space here to explore, to imagine, and to burn off a little STEEM !!! Good luck on making that successful transition !!

Im busy making the transition right now. signed up a couple days ago. Im liking the steem layout so much. I will continue to do vlogs on youtube and kinda mix it up with articles slash vlogs for steemit. i hope it all pans out the way it is in my head :p

Sounds like a good plan, keep experimenting, good luck !

I'm planning on doing something like that too.

This is interesting. It is also quality content so I'm Resteeming it. The trolling on YT is terrible but it is here, too. The trolling approach is quieter. But we won't get into that stuff - don't want to spread negativity on a sunny Saturday morning :) Steem on!

Steem on! Thanks for checking it out, peace

Upvoted, this is a very inspiring article, I have been thinking about trying some different things with Steemit, I have a poem written but I haven't posted it yet.

anyhow keep up the good work.

you never know what will happen, thanks, and good luck with your vision, wherever it may lead !

Native video-hosting should be coming soon to Steemit, so things may change. But, yes, you got it right, posting your own YT videos is fine but add a paragraph of context and a back-story helps a lot here.

oh interesting... but yeah i'm really getting in the swing of making blog posts, gotta add a few more markdown tricks now! (-:

Markdown doesn't have many tricks! If you know basic HTML that will work, but no fancy CSS stuff (unless you know a way that works). And be careful as HTML and Markdown don't mix well within the same paragraph, so leave extra lines between the two coding structures.

yeah, I'm pretty dense about all that... my next step is just basic headers, emphasis, lists, alignment, etc., ty

Interesting to hear about more youtube content creators switching gears, do you just feel that upkeep managing both isn't worth it? I was mainly planning on youtube in conjunction with steemit for certain things.

Like game reviews - doing a "let's play " type video while also breaking it down in a steemit post sounds pretty good. It does seem like there is room to use both mediums in a synergistic way without it taking too much effort.

What I wouldn't support is just linking the youtube video into steemit without adding any information/context/breaking it down and so basically trying to double dip the content.

yes, good points... my youtube stuff had pretty much wound down and stopped (I was into tabletop gaming last year, but now am on to other things), so it's basically a fresh start here. it seems that they each have their separate strengths to manage differently. peace
