The first and biggest project of the Smart Media Token community is Appics. The mostly German team announced the Instagram-like mobile app shortly after the official SMT announcement by Steemit.inc. It has a much more mass-market approach than any other Steem-based app so far and teases with a gorgous design and great flexibility for mobile content creators. The long-awaited ICO is now very close and in this article I will present the ICO details.
What Is Appics?
Appics is a next-generation mobile app for iOS and Android. It will be very similar to Steemit but focused on Photos and Videos. There will also be Live-Streaming for selected users. The app will use Appics (XAP) instead of Steem. The posting, voting and payout system works just like on Steem with the little twist that 65% are author rewards, 10% are Appics fees and 25% are curation rewards. The team is incredibly active on Telegram, Twitter and Facebook and travels from one investor round to the next. So far they have won several presentation awards and created great interest in the token.
Four Public ICO Rounds
The Pre-ICO was sold out in just 26 minutes. The public ICO begins on March 28th and has four rounds. Each round lasts for one week (or until the hardcap is reached). The more money you want to invest the more personal details you must reveal about yourself. All tokens will be issued as ERC20 Ethereum tokens as the SMT protocol from Steemit is not yet released. As soon as that happens the ERC20 tokens will be swapped into XAP. That means you will also need an Ethereum wallet to hold your Appics until then.

The Appics Bounty System
If you want to earn extra XAP tokens you can already do that with the awesome Appics bounty system. There are tons of features that allow you to promote Appics on all kinds of social media and earn stakes for the bounty share release. The easiest way to earn them is by connecting your Facebook and Twitter account and like, comment and retweet the official Appics posts. The system will automatically recognize your activity (with a delay of up to a few days). You can also connect apply for special bounties via Steemit, Telegram, Reddit, Instagram and MANY MORE.
Further, you will get a referral code to the bounty system that will give you 5% of all XAP investments done via you on the ICO (if they have at least 1000 XAP). These tokens are additonal and not taken away from the investors. That is a pretty good number and might be substantial if you are lucky enough to refer a future XAP whale to the ICO. Personally, I feel like Appics will be a great reset for content creators of the photo/video niche and allow to be an early adopter. Besides the monetary benefits of starting early within the ecosystem, this app will be focused on mobile sharing like traveling, events, sports and stuff like that. I will use this app to be less in front of Steemit and more outside creating and connecting with people bringing change to this world. I honestly think that I might become more active on Appics than I ever was on Steemit. But we will see about that when the app is finally being release in Q3 2018 with the Alpha Launch.

They just banned me from their Telegram group when asking deeper questions. Wrote a post about it on Steemit. They currently don't seem to like if someone ask questions. They ignore real feedback by not replying. They even did it to another guy who wrote the best feedback in the group his name is aRios I think they may have banned him as well. Luckily I did a screenshot of most topics. They are not experienced so be aware.
I hate it when they do that. It happened to me with other ICOs too. Thanks for letting us know how unreliable they are. And their feature can be implemented on steemit.com too. It just depends on steemit inc if they want to do airdrop or not. With blockchain its so easy to create money out of thin air. If they sell the idea right. And hows your reward system working? Airdrop also means higher inflation rate? It's not a good coin to hold.

I think Appics might be a place where more people will appreciate visual content rather than text. Right now, just posting images or videos on Steemit without a narrative is somewhat unpopular, so I believe having an own social media for this is a great initiative.
Well, you have apps for this on the STEEM blockchain such as Steepshot.io and dmania.lol
I know, but I'm still hesitant about using them, since everything I post there will end up on my Steemit wall. Similarly, I would not use Instagram if everything I posted there ended up on my Facebook wall.

Even just in organisation of layout would make it 10 x better, integrating a proper private message function, bookmarks, etc
maybe a long term solution past the 7th day is in order.. a new steem token where active users can make a side bar for google/facebook style advertising.. all with customization of course.

No, this is an app that is based on Steemits Smart Media Tokens. They will be bought via Steem and will most likely increase the value of Steem.
It is a competitor to Steem. That you can buy it via Steem doesn't change that's it's its own crypto-currency.
Personally, I will use both systems and I think many will. What about the Steem from the ICO that will be locked into the internal exchange for stability? Will that not be beneficial for the Steem price?

I think that should be in the SMT whitepaper. As far as I understand it that allows for a more stable exchange of the SMT into Steem. I will read the whitepaper again in the few days. It has been a few months since my first read.
Community accounts are the hivemind feature coming with the hard fork 20 "velocity" update to the Steem blockchain. That will allow people to transform an account to a community account that will gather people for niche topics around it. I am not sure exactly how that will play out but the account would basically become some kind of decentralized account. If the community is able to find Steem Power delegations than that would probably serve as a nice alternative to SMT's.

Well technically what's to stop someone creating something that blows Steemit out the water but with their own SMT token? Actually from where I'm looking that wouldn't even be that difficult, the hardest part of creating Steemit it was probably the blockchain and the rules not so much this front end which still looks very much like a beta with many placeholders
100% agree with this.. there are soo many missed opportunities on steem. i.e. long term pay out for blogs past the 7 day.. i understand why there is a expiration at 7 days for the 50/50.. but what about side bar of advertising customization etc. based on Views and click through.. like facebook/google. with a separate token. it may be able to curtail the wholesale selling of upvotes.. give people who want to get exposure for there articles from people that are reading older articles. @i-am-mark has some good ideas.. i have been pressing him into articulating these.

For what it's worth, it seems like Round C and D will have no minimum limit for investing. Round A is minimum 5k usd and round B is minimum 2.5k usd. I don't see this as a bad thing. Waiting might be wise, as the product will be more ready for production, making for a safer investment.
Am I missing something? Have you seen something different than the article above? My article has no k on that minimum. It's five dollars, not five k in the article I read. Ok, I see that there are three zeros after the period. And five dollars seems silly. But I expect a comma not a period. Confusing.
Yeah, the article is wrong. In the Appics Telegram chat the minimums for round A, B, C and D are written as "$5000", "$2500", "No limitation" and "No limitation" respectively.

Thanks for the update. Super excited to see this one develop. I believe this could as some were saying, set the tone for how SMTs will effect the STEEM market. Sadly we have to wait until Q3 2018 for the alpha version of the app. So a bit more patience before we can start using it.

That's a very good point. Steepshot is a pretty similar concept. At the moment the app doesn't work for me but the web version is awesome. Appics will be a bit more versatile with Video as well. And they will have very stable servers for that as they will use centralized Amazon servers for starters and only switch to IPFS when the network becomes more reliable.
Appics looks good on first look. With funding they can reach many users and if they can develop a comparable Instagram alternative with balanced reward system they should succeed.
I also believe their success or failure will encourage or discourage respectively many other developers to use SMT in their platforms.

We'll have to wait for them to integrate their 'Appics' on steem's smt. No one will get discourage if at the first place there's no intervention of smt on these so called steem based apps.

Seems like an interesting App. But I don't like the fact that some of the functions like live-streaming is only available for some users. this is just the same as instagram. Just because you don't have a lot of followers it doesn't mean that you don't have anything to say or that your content sucks.

Well, if I understand it right than there will be part of the funds generated by the ICO locked in Steem to stabilize the exchange between Steem and XAP. That will mean that this Steem will not be availble on the market anymore which should be beneficial for the Steem price. Also, all ICO money must be paid in Steem (which currently is not possible hence the Ethereum token). that should also drive up demand for Steem as there will be some people investing millions into Appics and other SMT's.

New to steemit and just learning the system. I'm excited to see and learn about all that's happening in the steemit system.
I,like a lot of people, am unhappy with Facebook and growing more unhappy with you tube all the time. But Instagram, not so much. It is my experience that a lot of users are satisfied, not overjoyed, but satisfied with Instagram. It is going to be harder to get these people to move. You can not overcome human nature to stay with what you know by offering something " just as good" or " a little bit better ". It needs to be demonstrably superior.
I want this to succeed. I want the steemit ecosystem to succeed. But I personally think this project will be a slow growth area of the steemit system. I hope I'm wrong.
