So with SMT's being worked on and communities being on the horizon as well I like to think of them as subreddits. I am not 100% sure as to how exactly they are going to work but I imagine that they will set some sort of beneficiary rewards and have moderators that earn those rewards depending on the amount they are active governing it, etc.
I remember when I started using Reddit in 2009 as a lurker and then signed up some time in 2010 or 11 and there weren't many subreddits around yet at the time. This changed quickly as anyone could create their own subreddits about pretty much anything. There are subreddits about your country, city, your hobbies, your work, your favorite tv shows, anime, band, actors. Name anything and it probably exists as a subreddit. The hard part is getting some traffic into them which many of them lack but with an easy to find name someone might stumble upon your community over time. Here's a traffic graph of the growth of amount of subreddits over time.
Here on Steem we've gotten used to #life being on top constantly for some weird reason, I personally find it to be a pretty dumb tag to use in your post. It could be that people think their post might get some more visibility due to curators checking out that tag but instead everyone is thinking the same way so it has the counter effect. Oh well, I like to still use my tags as they fit with the post and sometimes try and be a bit funny about it.
Same thing with subreddits, some can be called something you don't really expect and it might make it hard to find them but they rely on popularity and advertisement of others users mentioning it in comments and related posts to grow in subscribers. There are some quite weird ones with bizarre names.
For instance there's a subreddit called r/birdswitharms where yes, it's literally pictures of birds with human arms photoshopped onto them, yet it has 188k subscribers, here's a pic I found on there that I decided to meme:
![](https://images.hive.blog/768x0/https://i.imgur.com/5PwDntg.png)
Then there's the "thestopgirl" subreddit of a random clip of a girl saying stop when being filmed by the camera crew at a stadium: 26k subscribers. Yes, it's literally this gif being posted over and over again.
![](https://images.hive.blog/768x0/https://i.imgur.com/7h2GAPY.jpg)
Going back to the weird ones, this one is called "animalswithoutnecks" but has a lot of other random things where they've just edited out their necks in photoshop. 34k subscribers.
One of my favorite ones is called "wheredidthesodago" and it basically started with this one gif in this r/funny post:
![](https://images.hive.blog/0x0/http://i.imgur.com/3t1tT.gif)
Now it has over 1 million subscribers and they continue to daily post gifs of TV commercials taken out of context in the titles. The internet ladies and gentlemen...
Anyway, I expect the amount of communities to explode the same way on Steem, each with their own history of how they got about, what happened and which ones will become very popular over time.
Dang it, now I feel like I'm dumb LOLOLOLOL. I won't use it too often no more, swear.. T^T
Very popular communities on Steem - My guess -
@ddaily Might be a bit bias on this one as I'm one of the members and it's been growing (Well, we just move from @dtubedaily to @ddaily (so this one is like just starting, really) now we're pushing it hard and even have http://ddaily.org/) Yes, a little hype and advertisement right there. Please don't flag LOLOL
If you like that subreddit r/funny , you will prolly think this is a cool one too.@comedyopenmic
I have seen this one around but just got into it just lately and love their live talk. Very helpful and very steemy.
Now I'd like to go check out all those small niche subreddit you mentioned. Had no idea about it. I just started to creep on reddit not too long ago so..@helpie
Which one do you think will become super popular on Steem ?? (serious question) :)
Hey @waybeyondpadthat :)
dream come true.... hahahaha thanks for the shoutout !Seems that we @helpie's are popular kids???
help mebut .. I really want to add that @comedyopenmic has been on of the most supportive communities out there , they are busting their asses to keep that wheel going and it has proven to keep a lot of peeps around ... I was originally kidnapped and forced to do slave pig labor by @dj123 ...but I think we are in cool terms now so I have stuck around :) and hopefully they won't kick me out.. or make bacon out of me... I'm not sure when they are joking there.....
Let's go ahead and put this in the top spot for a while. @comedyopenmic and @helpie are both great communities. Probably the best communities on steemit to be honest.
Hahahha #intense
gotta take care of my peeps
I think we'll continue to see a lot of "refugees" from places with more censorship. We already see a lot of "fringe" political discussion on here: #informationwar, #familyprotection, etc.
The difference with Steem, I think, is that it has a built-in anti-toxicity mechanism, which I hope continues to work moving forward. I don't want Steem to end up like Voat. Have you seen Voat? It's horrible. If you haven't, please take my word for it and just never go there.
Now I got curious about Voat - I haven't really heard much about it in the last few years. What's the problem there?
Oh, just some examples of why humans were a mistake...
It's an image I took of their frontpage today, but I don't want to embed it; not safe for polite company of any sort, so be advised.
Oh wow, I see what you mean.. I would not want Steem to be anything like that.
I have no idea what they are going to look like but reddit style would make sense considering it is already developed and widely accepted. What I am hoping for is a lot more niches to form though and hopefully some active SP that is interested in the community itself. I think some of the stronger community groups will be onboarding platforms themselves.
The other thing that I am hoping is that steem content will be spread from those points out into the world as well as become public forums of a sort for sharing great steem content internally that might be relevant to the community.
I wish I could build a mental picture as it helps me understand but...
nothing. :D
@tarazkp, @acidyo are you of the opinion that communities will just emerge at their will or there need for regulation of community creation and operations??
I am pretty sure that Hivemind will mean that people can create regulated communities.
So far, photography is a popular tag on Steem. Over time, I agree with you in that funny, goofy, and quirky could take over. That is what the internet is all about.
Cat pics and videos tend to always make it to the top of the popularity charts.
Either way, I see the communities as something very special and will help to propel Steem forward.
Oh mehn, this is a crazy growth here
U know I also have same feeling when making use of the #life tag but somehow it feels like most ofy posts have to do with life itself and so I just make us of it. Many people have called it a useless tag Coz they don't get curated and I think it's because, just like you said, everyone is using the tag so ur posts gets buried
Talking about communities on Steemit, I haven't been around lately to monitor what's been going on around here but I think that communities like #steemjet, #steemiteducation, #steemstem and the like will really do well around here .
Gaming and crypto just go together ... There is a great probability for that one.
Also photos and traveling.
The subreddits sounds so funny, I don't thinkwe can have such fun communities here. Steemit seems to be too serious for that.
The @artzone and the @wafrica are doing well on steemit so far, I think they will be popular. Steemstem and Steemhunt are already popular, SMT will only sweeten the pie😄
I am the only thing that could make The Rock more magnifacent
Also a little update here.
Who will be the best subreddit? Obviously @comedyopenmic . We need to be original though. We can't call it sub-steems. That is just copy cat nonsense. Communities just sounds to white collar. I know the first sub-steem I am starting is haircare for men. Possibly followed by a photoshop me sub-steem where you paint me like one of your french girls. I make everything look better. Here are some past works I found of me.
Something like a NSFW token might have some potential. If porn doesn't drive technology ahead I don't know what will.

SMTception.Imagine a community called Steemit is created and ends up being the top community, used the same way Steemit right now is used - with #life posts all over.
Fun is fun.But seeing how humans always give preference to enjoyment in the end, I'd say funny would be at the top i.e. @comedyopenmic
Cats everything else is a distant second.
that was a good one :)
Society is developing wonderfully
I hope to achieve all we wish
Really great article and very distinctive information
Just SMT is gonna make it more interesting..Most communities have been doing great like the @air-clinic @wafrica @steemhunt and some others too.
Greetings...Like you said, we dont 100% know the community service will function. For now, i see the #ulogs tag doing very well, #steemnaira tag with little support are trying too. Before 2020, see @steemcamp community trending especially in Africa. Lets see how it will tutn out to be.
Dude, #ulogs has gone wild! LOLOL
Very interesting stats on Reddit. Seems like you spent some time on your research. I agreed with you: good things take time. A few years and Steem is already in top 25-30 coins at coinmarketcap. Also, there are several good projects have started at Steemit that are getting huge positive response. My favorite gaming project is still Steemgar but unfortunately, it is in the incapable hands otherwise it could have proved to be the 'Candy Crush of Steemit'. So, everything/project we see out of Steemit is becoming part of it. From YouTube to Producthunt...we have all of them mostly in decentralized form. With next BTC bullrun, Steem will be in top 500 US websites again. So, just HODL.
Nice writeup @acidyo.
I am still betting on the @ddaily community ❤️

Bwahahhaa I just answered exact same one! :D ❤️ #ddaily
Great minds think alike ❤️

I will keep hodling my steem no matter what

I can’t wait to see how the comics community is going to develop. I’ve been setting things up to transition in to comics for the last year, and it “should” coordinate with the time Communities and SMT’s roll out. I can’t wait to just draw crypto-inspired-comics 12 - 14 hours a day and share them with a dedicated community that’ll appreciate them.
I love the Reddit style of communities. Never used Reddit so I'm happy to have learned from your post.
The @absactly community is one hell of a great community and I only see the gaining more popularity as far as they continue to diversify their contents.
I won't forget the @steemmonsters community as well. It's already popular, I guess.
Also communities that give out votes for using their tag like @wafrica @artzone are going to very popular.

Ooopsy! Forgot that #steemmonsters one yes, that one is also going wild! I will have to learn how to play still. My gaming skill sucks - -
Yeah, you simply gotta increase your skills or simple get left out! Lol
I just can't help but wonder if SMTs will be considered securities.

I never knew the origin of wheredidthesodago...now I do..
you learn something everyday..
potential communities to be popular here
steem/crypto
steem/libertarian
steem/gaming ( fortnite or something like that , I don't do gaming)
I wish for the below
steem/pewdiepie where we do all the work for curation and pewds reacts to gifs...hopefully getting more exposure for steem at same time..
Communities with the most money, Steem Power. Seems like most people on Steemit especially flock to the money.

(7 is the best number!)
6 is obviously SteemSTEM, dunno why you needed to censor it out like that
Don't be so modest, it is definitely 5th.
After those silly reddit examples I know for sure what community wil be the most popular : "Put ned's hair on everything " :)))
I would really love to see Steem artist do something similar to what /r/colorizedhistory does, where they take really old photos and bring them to life with color and curating it if its a bit damaged!
This is my favorite coloring of this his past month, if you browse that subreddit for a few minutes, you would realize why it would be super cool to have artist doing something similar here too :-D
i haven't used Reddit at all so i guess that everyone can subscribe to any community without any restriction?
If that's the case then when and if steemit becomes like that everyone will subscribe to the majority of the communities. The ones that are already huge like steemstem or tags like life-korea-cryptocurrency-steemit will remain the top ones
Well I do think that that Crypto, Life and photography will be on top. This is based on the ranking of the used tags.
I doubt it that sport will be big, because lots of the sports bloggers moved to Scorum. Okay lots of them are crossposting. Scorum and others do shown that steem missed the boat on communities!
Cheers,
Peter
Clearly the @ocd community.

Do not miss the last post from @steemitboard:
I like showerthoughts but I believe gaming community will be big, sooner or later, but it will be big. There are a lot of gamers outaide steem that don't know that they habe a possibility of streeming on steem. Once they learned about it there will be a massive move from twitch/yt/fb to steem..
#streemonsteem
Hi! The Spanish community is big inside steemit, and due the strong crisis, Venezuelan is big too. There are several people who want to support the Venezuelan people and it look steem like a way to help.
Indeed due the mechanism of content creation it could be a tool for find reals solutions to the problem beyond the money... I don't know, I just dream.

Lol, these subreddits are gold but, I don't think that Quality Nazis would allow that kind of content on here.
I think an active nickelback fan community is well overdue on the steemit platform.
I suspect the size of the community accounts and large interested parties will have some say in what becomes popular.
Hopefully their will be some inclusive curation team accounts around to support also.
#caturday? :P

I personally use #life when I'm using steem more like social media than article-media. Like, If I'm writing about my baby or, you know, LIFE, then I use it.
#didntevenknowitwasapopulartag
And that's probably one of the reasons it's popular.
I completely agree, the tags on the left need to be revamped somehow. Like you said people use tags because they are over there but noone is looking at them...
I think #freewrite will continue to be a relatively small (though larger than now) tight-knit community that welcomes strangers, but doesn't ever go viral.
@steemhunt and @musing are definitely are now established communities. I see a lot of potential for @dlike as well. One thing we are missing is a community for meme, after @dmania lost its delegation, we are yet to see a good community for memes.
