Is it actually really possible that only one book you read or a film you watched could change your life, the direction, the path you choose?
I asked myself what special tale, out of so many I read over 4 decades, would have such strong influence on me.
For the last few weeks, I’ve tried to collect all those brilliant movies and various exciting reading material. I will mention a few in this article, following up on my previous post with my answer, reflecting on this topic.
Would You Go Completely Paperless, Adapting To The World's Digital Future!?
It would be hard to let go of old classic paper books.
There are too many I love! I read Kafka, Edgar Allen Poe, Herman Hesse and many female troubled "soul sisters", authors like Sylvia Plath, poetry by Frida Kahlo and Anais Nin and of course many, many more.
A Mad Girl's Love Song by Sylvia Plath
Discovering my subconscious mind
I also read Anais Nin again and again. I related to every word and sentiment of hers. The first book "House of Incest" was like a symbolic dream I felt trapped in and couldn't escape, a poem.
The novel is a surrealistic look within the narrator's subconscious mind as she attempts to escape from a dream in which she is trapped, or in Nin's words, as she attempts to escape from "the woman's season in hell." - Source goodreads
Dealing with blunt and honest reality
I also read bestselling author Paolo Cohello but there is one author I got stuck with on and on until I had enough of "loathing with him" in Las Vegas :)
It's Hunter G.K. Thompson who ended up committing suicide at the age of 67.
Hari Kunzru wrote that "the true voice of Thompson is revealed to be that of American moralist, one who often makes himself ugly to expose the ugliness he sees around him."
"He became well known for his inveterate hatred of Richard Nixon who he claimed represented "that dark, venal, and incurably violent side of the American character"and whom he characterized in Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. Thompson's output notably declined from the mid-1970s, as he struggled with the consequences of fame, and he complained that he could no longer merely report on events as he was too easily recognized. He was also known for his lifelong use of alcohol and illegal drugs, his love of firearms and his iconoclastic ontempt for authoritarianism. He remarked: "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me."
I remember those times back in New York!
Hunter's books were exciting at the time because they revealed the dark side in myself but at the end, his view of life motivated me to be different. I wanted to choose the light and bright side of existance, started craving to discover the beauty around me not the ugliness, tried to get rid of the self-destructive tendency I noticed in my twenties. I changed 360 degrees after the birth of my daughter. Life was upside down, the moment I held her in my arms.
I wanted the sweet life again!
"La Dolce Vita" , my favourite movie from the 60's, since I heard of Federico Fellini in my teenage years.
LOVE was born and "Hunter's shadow" died.
Veronica decides to die! ( Paolo Cohello) cause those essential common questions : "What am I doing here today and why do I go on living?"
Existence is orderly chaos!
I started reading Rumi
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I'll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass the world is too full to talk about.- Rumi
Khalil Gibran, Yudah Berg, The 72 Names of God and zillion of spiritual books like Chögyam Trungpa's "Orderly Chaos, The Mandala Principle" (Dharma Ocean Series) and taught myself to walk on "Razor's Edges" with fearless hope and faith.
How Do YOU keep your BALANCE after One Week on STEEMIT and Not Falling off the RAZOR's EDGE?
As I wrote in this previous article : " My life was full of danger and opportunities. We should not worry to fall or fail but always keep an eye on the powerful universe. One helping hand at the right time will get you back up, when you slip off but if we are in balance, it will help us in all our interactions."
Whether good or bad, happy or sad, clear or obscure, everything is interrelated and reflects a single totality. There is chaos and confusion because everything happens by itself, without any external ordering principle. At the same time, whatever happens expresses order and intelligence, wakeful energy and precision. Through meditative practices associated with the mandala principle, the opposites of experience—confusion and enlightenment, chaos and order, pain and pleasure—are revealed as inseparable parts of a total vision of reality. - Source from the book orderly chaos
What are your books and movies you will never forget?
The most recent book I discovered, a 2005 dystopian science fiction novel by the fantastic Japanese author Kazuo Ishiguro. It might change your life as well.
"Memories, even your most precious ones, fade surprisingly quickly. But I don’t go along with that. The memories I value most, I don’t ever see them fading." .......from NEVER LET ME GO
'There's a journey we must go on, and no more delay . . ." The Buried Giant

The wolf of the wall street.
Perfume by Patrick Suskind. Such an amazing book. I found out about it from a Kurt Cobain interview and immediately went out and bought it. The beginning is a bit slow paced, at least for my liking, but around a third into the book, it get very, very interesting. It's a perfect adventure book which evokes a lot of inner questions about one's nature, also, it makes one reflect on their life a lot.
Oh ! I need to read this one. My friends told me about a while ago. Thanks so much for this!
It really is a must read! :)
I will ! The first now on my list
:)
Oh Perfume is mind-blowingly good!!
It's so poetic!
Beautifully so!
Movies : The big blue and The big beauty
Great post @mammasitta ;)
Many movies change my life but most recently i watched an old great one tittled "Instinct" with Antony Hopkins... you should watch it, it's a psychological movie & it bring me back to what really matter & should matter for every one...
I'm now acting as a silver back gorilla, watching over the one i care & if every one would do the same, we be living a better world not isolated from each other but with each other watching each other back ;)
We lost our natural instinct by going to fast in technologies...
BOOOOM!
awesome !!! I have to check that one out! I got so much great feedback! i needed to get new ideas. I love Hopkins a lot !
Hello My Dear ! /bow Great post ! So glad to "read You again" The # 1 book, lol of course was The Kama Sutra ... LMAO Actually I think #1 was Orwell's 1984 at age 14 ... then "Time Enough For Love" by Robert Heinlein and then The Sherlock Holmes collection .... those were Major influences in my life at an early age. Best movie .... Definitely Star Wars .... /Hugs chat with you soon Hon !
Read More, Reason More ... JTS
Kazuo Ishiguro is one of my favorite authors. Have you read Remains of the Day? It's so much different from his speculative fiction, but so beautiful.
I am amazed that somebody knows this incredible author and yes I did read it! Yes ! So beautiful. It was the reason why I went for the fiction. Brilliant mind!
I found this for you . I added it to my post
Love this! Thank you.
All I can remember for now is "Thr3e" by Ted Dekker. The plot twist is insane.
I never heard about
luv it ! will get it !
DEF Eckart Tolle "Power of the now" its sort of my bible ("basic instructions before leaving earth")
And great to see Fear and loathing in your list. It's one of the best movies ever made.
Oh yes!!! Thats for sure another one I love and live by !
That movie and all others by Thomson are superbe.
Altered Carbon. An amazing sci fi book that shook up the genre for me and gave me back my love of writing and reading some years ago when I was in a rut!
I put this on my list! Never heard about......Thanks!!!
Its a violent dystopic romp of a book!
sounds just right for me :)
For me, it was Seth Godin. His first book, Permission Marketing, was a business book... it taught me a lot, but more than anything it led me down a path.
I read many of his other books - The Dip, Tribes, Purple Cow. Then I was hooked, and I moved into other self-improvement works: Tim Ferriss, Tony Robbins, and many more besides. For me, these books were a source of motivation and inspiration. It may be silly, there may be platitudes... but for me, it really worked.
The Wolf of Wall Street
Love that one!!!!
Its a good example of why crypto was invested after the 2008 financial crisis.
I like this post, @mammasitta.
I've read some books which changed my life. For example:
A better way to life, by Og Mandino.
The richest man in Babylon by Geoge Clason.
The Instant Millionaire by Mark Fisher.
All of them in Spanish. They changed my life, ammong others :)
There are not realy movies or books or whatnot that realy had a impact on my life. However one movie that i find realy cool : "A man from earth".
Congratulations @mammasitta!
Your post was mentioned in the hit parade in the following category:
Wow! That's wonderful!

A book that has been recommended to me by @reconnectnature influenced me very much in the last year! It was the "peaceful warrior" or "Der Pfad des friedvollen Kriegers". It is an amazing and unique book! :)
Wonderful ! I remember I wrote an article a while ago. Need to look for now.
hi, my exclusive book :
https://www.audiobooks.com/audiobook/twilight-of-the-gods-the-mayan-calendar-and-the-return-of-the-extraterrestrials/211378
My favorite book at this moment is Street cat named Bob. You can also watch a movie. Amazing story!
The book of my childhood is Little Prince of A.Saint-Exupery.
And what about a movie, i liked "Amelie" - little bit crazy but nice one)).
If you like serious movies you can watch "A monster calls". It's very emotional one.
Oh yes, We had to read this book at school and it was very influencial in my childhood years.
Well, for me every movie I watch, every book I read, every interaction I make (including this very comment here) changes my life a bit. Since I'm alive, I'm influenced by everything around me. Some might have a greater influence than the other though. But I love all kinds of interactions. Watching and reading is just another interaction for me. Whatever direction they lead my life to, it always seems interesting to me.
I really appreciate this subject as it is very relevant to where I am at. ( just publishing a series of my life experiences that were game changers ) When it comes to books, I guess the 2 books that I recall had a major influence on me was David Deida's "The way of the superior man" . It has been a constant source of inspiration and changed my perspective in regards to relationships fundamentally as I begun to understand what true empowerment is all about. The other book was Osho's " The Alpha and the Omega". It was one of those books that left me feeling that if I never read another book...this is it. It left me with a sense of peace and fulfilment rarely experienced after reading other books. But hey...I could go on and on...it certainly is a great subject. I like you blogs . Samuel Stonehill has recommended you to me and I am glad he did. Being fairly new to Steemit it I am slowly but surely find my way. For now I up-voted and follow you. Keep it going with a sense of perpetual astonishment...
i loved Lord of the rings!
AL-QUR'AN.
like the bible! I understand! Der Koran
I just say it's a al-qur'an that can inspire me.
"The Green Mile" changed my view on the death penalty. I am not for the death penalty before this movie I was for it.
Oh myyyy!!!! I need to rewatch this movie. I can barely remember anything about it
awesome one!!!!!
Wikipedia! lol
You may laugh but it is true.
When I was at the University, I went to the library.
They had only a few computers and they were nothing we have today.
The computers were terribly scarce at that time and the ones we had were slow like a snail.
So, the most of my time was spent with the books and not computers.
So, one day I was trying to find something, but nothing was opening on the darn machine.
Then I tripped on something called Wikipedia.
It was literally just launched but it already had more books than any library I knew...
It is not a book, but the accumulation of knowledge, and it definitely changed my lifestyle and my perspective.
The Awakened Imagination by Neville Goddard. Funnily enough I literally just recommended this to another Steemian today. :)
Awwww! That's a great one ! Friends told me a bout a while ago but I forgot
The Bible, also Ace Ventura Pet Detective, Half Baked, and Team America World Police.
The bible! Oh Yes! Thanks for the suggestions ! I will check them out
Wonderful @mammasitta

He is indeed a marvelous actor!
I will take it to attention to read once in your life THE BHAGAVADGITA. It is a great book explaining the laws of karma and what is the purpose of our life and how we can achieve the ultimate happiness. This book has a great place in India. Its teachings are priceless and even some of the world's largest universities llike Oxford , MIT have it in their curriculum.
Beautiful! I suggest Niskala & Sekala a Balinese book I enjoyed very much.
Here is the link : https://g.co/kgs/azr9My
The life before and after .....Sekala is the world we see and Niskala the world we don't see, like haven maybe
What is it all about?
The Art of War
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
The Autobiography of a Yogi
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is an awesome movie. I haven't read the whole book.
There's many more book and writing that change my life.

https://suntzusaid.com/artofwar.pdf
I appreciate your kind feedback and contribution.
I am truly overwhelmed, how many incredible suggestions I got past hours, since I posted. I got a huge new list of reading material and all this after writing my article from yesterday, planning to go paperless 😜😋 I don't think I will ever get rid of real books.
Oh my goodness, I'd forgotten about The Autobiography of a Yogi. Now that, is one helluva book. It absolutely blew my mind. :)
Tuesday's With Morrie by Mitch Albom is my favorite book of all time
One Book, One Movie. "Lathe of Heaven", by Ursula K. Le Guin. The original movie 1980 (PBS) not the remake 2002. Lucid Dreaming, Lucid Reading. Making dreams reality.
Why dream if there is no hope.
I am amazed how much feedback I get today and how many awesome, new books as well as movies I hear about. Thank you so much
Based on what I have seen you write, and respond to, if you have not seen, nor read The Lathe of Heaven, you will be in for a treat. I understand that you read far more fiction than sci-fi, but a good read is indeed a good read. (I hope I did not offend with this post)
the most impact or better the first big impression usually do movies or books you read or watch as a kid/teen.
which one?
Fight Club
1984
The Truman show
The Matrix
The Dark City
The Fight Club
John dies at the end.
nice video.
which one?

Let me know at least one!
When I was very young: "Gulliver's Travels" due the horrific view of imortality...
And, more recently, "The Gate to Women's Country" (by Sheri S. Tepper) due her way of cleansing from humanity men's stupid traits...
ahhhh ! I never heard of this one but will check it out! Sounds like my kind of book :)
Sheri S. Tepper is one of my favorite authors... Check it out also the book "After Long Silence"... its concept of "Thruth" is appaling...
I have some in ebook format if you want.
Thanks so much for your suggestion! I will look it up and so happy that i got more eating material now:) Nice to meet you.
The two books Northshore and Southshore, the book Grass and the book Raising the Stones shall not be missed as well... :)
Oh... and Family Tree!
And I will stop here otherwise I will list ALL her books...
But I would start by those...
Gullivers travels 💯
@mammasitta,
Read a lot of books and watched movies, but I don't think it gives me 100% pulses to change the life! But some of them are really interesting!
Anyway great article and thanks for sharing your experiences with us!
Cheers~
there must be at least one! Think .....I am curious
@mammasitta,
Once I watched a movie based on a teenager who wants to be a youtuber! And the story based on how he archived his goal. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the movie! But, that's the best inspirational movie for me!
Cheers~
"War and Peace" is a real classic at all times. Thank you @mammasitta
True classic!
You are right, but there are certainly many other interesting books;)

Danke Vielmals!!!!
All the books of Charles Bukowski but mostly the "Women" when i was 20 .
Bukowski was such a "lovely" drunk hahaha
Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. I was three the first time I ever read this book solo, and I haven't stopped reading since. That's more life-changing than any book I've read since because it made the rest possible. I wrote a story all about it on my blog called The House That Books Built - one of my first posts, actually. It talks about all the authors that influenced my life and love of reading.
Thanks for the article. I particularly enjoy the ones that get conversations started ;)
See ya next time!
Mo
Wonderful Mo! I got so many great suggestions and thats what I needed today :)
If you're in the mood for something funny, I suggest anything by Christopher Moore. If you like scaryish, then Joe Hill is a trusted source (Stephen King's son). I love to read, and will read most anything with a cover. I draw the line at romance novels...when I was a bookseller, I would hate having to stock that section. I called it stuff posing as literature...lol
