Snowpocalypse Survival Challenge Day 3

in #contest7 years ago

Hello my fellow survivors! I am enjoying our Snowpocalypse very much! This challenge is more difficult than I had imagined to set up and run, and I am so very appreciative that you guys are commenting in the manner instructed- it is super helpful and streamlines the contest a bit. You guys rock :)

Scroll down to see the consequences of your choices, and learn some lifesaving tips...

The storm of the century has hit. Record amounts of snow and freezing temperatures cause havoc across the nation. You will be in this storm trying to survive.

Each day for 6 days I will present a survival scenario. You will have three choices. Comment with your choice. One of the choices is the best for survival in the current scenario. The next day you will see if your choice was the correct one and be presented with the next days scenario.

Even if you die in the game you may still participate and learn valuable survival skills as well as receive a portion of the winnings.

Your name is in the long list in the comments of THIS POST if you signed up :)

Day 2 found you venturing out into the snow covered land to save your partner. You know route 12 pretty well, it winds through the mountains east of town. You have a decent truck and some survival supplies and skills.

Unfortunately, your truck got stuck in the worst way imaginable, and after trying for a long time to free it you realize that is not going to happen. You had three choices:

Option 1- Stay put, running the engine continuously for warmth, and wait for rescue.

Option 2- Strap on your snowshoes, pack your backpack with the survival gear and continue down route 12 to find your partner.

Option 3- Turn off the engine, crack the windows and wait for rescue.

Those of you who chose Option 1 decided it was not worth the risk to head forward on foot to rescue your partner. You got back in the truck, closed the windows and stuffed blankets along the door cracks. You kept the engine running and the heater on, sure that rescue would come soon and then you could alert them to your roommates location further down route 12.

Soon after you settle into the seat, you really start to feel all the stress of driving through the snow and the worry over your partner, not to mention the physical strains of trying in vain to free your truck has exhausted you. You find yourself barely able to keep your eyes open so you let them close for a minute, knowing you will hear rescue coming in the vastly quiet winter.

Unfortunately it wasn't the stress and physical exhaustion that put you to sleep.

When you inhale, oxygen binds to your red blood cells which then transport it through your body. Carbon dioxide is then released when you exhale, freeing the red blood cells to grab more oxygen.

Carbon monoxide also binds to your red blood cells, however your cells are 200 times more attracted to CO than oxygen, so they forgo the life bringing oxygen for carbon monoxide, and just like that the tissues in your body are no longer receiving oxygen.

Just a small amount of CO can kill in minutes. Symptoms include nausea, dizziness, headache, drowsiness and tissue damage. If the concentration is high enough unconsciousness often occurs before any other symptom is noticed. This is why it's imperative to avoid exposure to carbon monoxide.

If you chose Option 1, you have passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Never run your car in an enclosed garage, and never keep your engine idling with your windows rolled up if you are stuck in your car.

Noooo! RIP @jbn @lucylin @stokjockey @felt.buzz

If you chose Option 1 and perished, you do not qualify for the Grand prize winning, but if you participate every day in this challenge you will still get the participation rewards.

If you chose Option 3, you get back in the truck and crack the window furthest from you, making sure it is not in the direction of oncoming wind. You turn off the engine and cover up with blankets.

A vehicle stuck in the snow becomes a freezing tin box rather quickly. You turn on the truck for the heater every 20 to 30 minutes. The slightly cracked window prevents the deadly odorless carbon monoxide fumes from filling the cab and turning lethal.

You wait for rescue.

If you chose Option 2 you pack your bag with the survival supplies and extra clothes you brought, and some of the water, leaving some in the truck for when you return. You know that snow to melted water ratio is 10 to 1, plus it takes time to melt.

You secure your snowshoes on your boots and head forward on route 12 to find your roommate.

You are waiting in your truck and suddenly WHOOMPH and snapping or cracking? You can't quite make out the sound but you step outside and hop on the bed to look for rescue.

You are hiking up route 12 and hear WHOOMPH and snapping or cracking. You stop.

All Survivors:

It happens fast. Before your mind has a chance to catch up with the growing white mass from above, you get hit with a hard wave.

Avalanche.

It carries you, tumbling. You can feel you are moving fast.

What do you do?

Option 1 Try to swim with it, aiming upward.

Option 2 Try to swim against it, aiming upward.

Option 3 Curl up in the fetal position, covering your head with your arms, and let it carry you.

I will put the three choices in the comments. Place your choice in the corresponding comment. There is one choice that is best for survival.

In 24 hours I will post the challenge for Day 4 as well as the answer to the correct choice.

Everyone who participates in each day's challenge is a winner! The Grand Prize winner will receive 70% of the prize pool. And all other participants will receive an equal share of 30% of the liquid SBD Prize Pool.

Good Luck!

I choose this

Already dead but playing as a zombie
I choose this option

Jbn, our resident zombie :) I'll need to work you into a future contest ;)

Mam.. Yes mam
salutes with both hands ;)

I have never met with avalanches, but this option seems beteer for me

Certainly I am unfortunate to be caught in an avalanche! Well, what the hell. I suppose I'll go along for the ride and since it's going this way, I'll go this way too! But I'd better get up to the air or I'll be dying here. So I'll swim in the direction the snow is flowing, but upwards so I can breathe. Sheeeeeeesh!

Well of course you're in an avalanche, did you expect anything less? ;)

I choose this option. The human body is much denser than snow, so you'll tend to sink as you get carried downhill. Try to stay afloat by kicking your feet and thrashing your arms in a swimming motion

Correct-The human body is denser than snow, you will sink!

I have ZERO ideas on how to approach an avanlanche. I’m guessing the deadly choice is n. 3, though, so I’m hoping either 1 or 2 will keep me alive.
Reading the other comments, both 1 and 2 seem to have good arguments going for them. I’d say n. 2 in order to try and keep as close to Route 12 as possible, but no amount of “swimming” on my part will be stronger than the avalanche.
Therefore I’m choosing n. 1 just because if I manage to keep on top of the snow, at least the incoming snow will hit my head instead on my face. And swimming with rather than against the avalanche will probably be a little less exhausting.

I like your explanation of the thought process behind your choice :)

Keep swimming. Don't stay still else you'll sink deep into the ground.

I choose this. Try to stay afloat and keep your head in the open air by swimming as hard as you can in the direction of the fast-moving snow.

I choose this. This gives you the best chance of survival.

I choose this option. Not swimming will sink me deeper into the avalanche. Swimming against it would be like pushing against a wall.

This option seems best to me. Swimming is the best choice. And most importantly swimming in the direction of the avalanche

I choose option 1 this time.

i choose this option

I choose this one

I choose this first option. Trying to swim through the snow and avoid getting hit with objects will be hard, but not impossible.

Jbn, our resident zombie :) I'll need to work you into a future contest ;)

Hahaha! I should have stuck with Balto instead of Mulan! 😂

This seems like the logical choice.

Tsunami !
Swim like a MF!
How many Eskimos do you see carrying three gallons of water?.....just sayin'

Lol touche' but they also have cultural tips ;)

totally unrelated - but for some reason it popped into my head when typing this...

Alcohol dehydrates - yeah right - how come I was healthy for 20 years when beer was the only thing I drank... (except 2 coffee's in the morning)

Mathematics dictates it has to be untrue (I ate normal foods, not just soup, or anything. lol)

Like i said, totally unrelated...

My Grandma used to watch the today show every morning when I was little and for some reason the 100 year old birthday clips caught my attention.

They used to talk about their secret for living long, and I remember so many times I heard Lots of bacon for breakfast and a Brandy every night!

Jus sayin...

bacon - hi saturated fats ( i only cook with pork fat or olive oil
nowadays) -

vegetable oils - are the 20th century con - causes inflammation in the body - which then leads to high cholesterol production - in an attempt to reduce the inflammation...

And then big pharma can sell you statin's - (the second biggest drug seller in the world btw).

Rockefellers et. al. - went into big pharma industry a long time ago - just before the time when vegetable fats were pushed as the healthy fats to use.......mmmm

I did some research and wrote an article a while back about this very thing- how REAL butter is fine, it's the margarine that's bad. Cholesterol and heart disease became rampant after vegetable oils showed up...

Oh don't get me started on the Rocker's and Morg's and Roth's n them...

Swim for your life! Keep that kinetic energy flowing! Dear God keep me warm.

No point in fighting the flow while also fighting to not be buried. Gotta swim for the surface though. Getting buried is no bueno.

This is my choice!

Option 1 is the best. Swimming in the direction of the avalanche gives you less resistance to survival.

I would choose this option. At least, swimming upwards gives me the opportunity to survive.
This contest is really empowering us to survive in any storm, especially in this winter.

Glad you're getting useful knowledge from this :)

Wow, am in an avalanche. Okay, my instincts tell me to swim upwards in the direction of the avalanche.

I believe this option is my best chance of survival

This one.

my choice as well

If avalanches are anything like rip currents then option three is the only way. However, since it’s snow let’s see if fighting by swimming will save me or kill me

The other two choices will have you covered in snow and suffocated

If you choose Option 2 Try to swim against it, aiming upward, comment here.

As an avid snowboarder, I’ve been taught to swim against the current of the avalanche, much like you would in a river. The goal here is to remain as close to the surface as possible when the avalanche stops, so as to be visible and not completely buried deep in snow.

The odds of surviving an avalanche must be very slim. But given these options, I'd reject # 1, because that's almost like surfing the avalanche into oblivion (my own oblivion, that is).

I'd reject #3, because that seems like I'd just be rolling with the snow, as it inevitably gets deeper and deeper. Instead of letting it "carry" me, I'd be letting it "bury" me.

That leaves #2. It sure won't be easy, but I believe it will increase my chances of survival, even if every so slightly.

I choose to swim upwards against it, aiming upward. This is as per the advice of the mountain academy. thanks for the interesting contest. I am learning a lot of survival tips and life- saving decisions, @arbitrarykitten

Thank you, I'm glad you're learning a few things, too!

There was a freak snowstorm in Egypt in 2012 I believe, so you never know, this could prove helpful!

DEAD because of a surprising, near-pathological need to poison myself any way I can

I would try to stay as close to the avalanche's source like when surfing on water.
The closer I can stay to the source direction, the less I will have to fight against the possibly exponential buildup of all the snow accumulating. And the more likely I could free myself of the snow above me.

Lol! I'd say you need to take evaluation of your real life there, my friend!

;) I really want to thank ya for sparing me from trying these things in real life, ahahaha. I may be good with knowledge and discernment about the artificial structures we live in, but when it comes to survival basics I obviously have a lot to learn.

Great thing this crash course will keep going for a few more days, as there is ample evidence we are on course to a real life crash.

Other people pay hefty sums for this sort of thing you know, and they get an F instead of motivating replies ;)

I read that you are supposed to try to get on your back and swim upwards to try to get away from the turbulence and the debris at the tongue of the avalanche. So, that is my choice.

I'm all in on option 2, I think you are better off on the trying to stay swimming against it, the sooner it passes by you, the sooner you can get to the top if you haven't managed to stay there through the rush of the snow wave.

Good point, try to start near your route!

Have to choose 2. If you go with the avalanche it could take forever before settling, thus, being more likely to get buried in it.

This one is hard... I'd probably choose to #3 if I didn't had to think but I'm pretty sure I'd die if this happened....Hmmm. I choose #2. (Let the God be with us...)

This will be my choice. I never even touch snow whole of my life. But hope this will be the best choice.

I choose this

I choose that option.

I enjoyed the suspense of the last day, even though I was late -- I'm surprised I survived. You had 2 survivor options. Very nice. I hope you can forgive my lateness but that's ok if not, I will still enjoy participating. I choose this option. Swim against and up. This is a guess but I feel the deepest parts of the avalanche will roll down so swim against it and up makes sense to me. Great job on setting this up so far!

This is my choice! Helps being from snowland!

Most definitely this one.

While "going with the flow" seems to be the way to endure this kind of extremely massive phenomenon because going against it is a lost battle, the fact is that "the flow" is downwards, leading to an icy tomb with no air and no moving space. Plus, if you swim with it you might end up going faster and faster and, when it finally stops, that might not be fun (plus, swimming into a tree seems likely).

I know you are supposed to get to the side of it, but maybe swimming against the current would get you to the end of the snow quicker?

If you choose Option 3 Curl up in the fetal position, covering your head with your arms, and let it carry you, comment here.

This is my choice! :D I hope I make it out alive.

That is what I would try

Missing in day 1 and 2 for the challenge :)
choice this one, because It happens fast. Before my mind has a chance to catch up :D

I would hope that I could think quickly enough to do option 3.

Option 3:
Good, Lord! What else could you do? 😰 At least I'd be closer to 😘ing my butt goodbye. Lol! 🤣

Lol, what a terrible week of luck so far!

And to be clear... I'd never be actually close enough to an avalanche. Like for real, I'd see it coming.

I literally didn't 'see it coming' this time cause I'm picturing MY actual surroundings... and if I'm headed out to the highway... I've already come away from the mountains. Alas, this hadn't been on my list of 'things to learn'... and I didn't cheat and look it up (assuming in the situation I'd have no internet- LOL!).

Pray for me...😨

I googled it. Looks like I'm dead. Though in my mind, I was protecting my face (and breathy hole) so when everything finally settled I would have some air (assuming I was buried) and be in a position to have the most force to KICK myself out.

Guess someone already tried that IRL and died...

I maintain I'd have broken all my limbs keeping them outstretched, and though maybe 'making it out on top', being a paraplegic is no sort of life!

Even knowing what I do now... I'd still die. Best for me to avoid avalanches I suppose. ;)

Question: Is there a point to continue playing (besides learning stuff)?

This was fun!

Watch for todays challenge! And I am not saying you died! You have to wait a couple hours for the new post :) But anyone who does, if they keep playing yes, they learn tips and tricks, but all daily participants receive a portion of the reward pool :)

i'll try option 3 this time

It's best to provide some protection to your head in such cases. So I chose option 3.

This one! Stay on top,

I choose 3

i choose this option and go with the flow. chances are, you'll roll within the direction of the avalanche until it settles down.

I go with this option. Got your head protected and sail with it

Oh No the Kitten Killed me Off. I am Toast..........@arbitrarykitten I still love you

No no dear Sir, you killed yourself off! Dangerous choices ;) You cannot pin this one on poor widdle me :(

I never place blame for my choices.........LOVE is Strong

Is there a don't panic option? I think I'll go with 3 here, there is no point exhausting yourself to try to go against it.

Everybody's gone surfing. Surfing Canada! :p
