Yesterday, in the course of my @ecotrain curation, I defended someone's right to express an opinion, even if I didn't agree with it. I was curating on behalf of the #ecotrain tag, which the guy had used. My comment was exactly this:
Always good to call BS. And a lot of the predictions and attribution of so-called causes are just that: BS. But we here at ecotrain really want to see SOLUTIONS, adaptation ideas to a changing environment, positive strategies, inputs that enable others etc.... Looking fwd to part 2. :) "Shut the fuck up and stay out of it" is not inclusive, community-based nor terribly helpful to the uninformed. But informing them is!! :) So what would you positively like to add to the discussion or inform people about, given everyone else has it wrong? THAT'S what we'd love to hear and support.
So, to his credit, he took up my invitation to post the counter argument. By the time I saw it today, he'd already received major downvotes by many other people. In fact, he made 10 posts in a 5 hour period, all of which other people downvoted to the extent that they are "greyed out". Today I tried to make some relatively neutral comments to his original post (trying to allow him the right to hold and express his opinion whilst pointing out that it is harder to post content than it is to discredit) and got the big "fuck you" followed by the downvoting rampage.
It made me think about downvotes, and what they're for.
I've used my downvote precisely 3 times snce HF21 - twice last week specifically to downvote someone blackmailing another person for steem to remove downvotes.
I believe in the right of all people to express opinions, not just because I happen to like them or agree with them. I think the best response to content I disagree with is to simply unfollow and ignore. I do it in real life too, not just online. :)
Pondering this little downvote rampage today and what it is there to teach me, I decided that the downvote rampage is exactly the mentality behind facebook, censorship and mainstream media. i.e. I will deny you the right to a counter opinion and penalize you in any way I can for having an opinion I don't like.
Impotent rage is an ugly thing.
Steem is unique in its evolution as decentralized media. I'm personally thrilledI'm just wondering out loud in this post about downvoting without accountability. I made my 3 downvotes very clear as to the WHY - and they were warranted and behaviour responses, rather than content driven. To indiscriminately rampage through someone's profile and downvote multiple posts and comments in such a short time that it was not even possible to have read them somehow makes me question the indiscriminate downvote. Yes, I know it's somewhat limited by Resource Credits. But might it not be more like Witness Votes? You only get 20 or 30 or 50 in a given time frame, so you better be damn sure they're appropriately used? at the way #newsteem has improved my posting and curation rewards, and is encouraging far better content.
Curious how many others have experienced a downvote rampage and what we might collectively learn from this?

I have only ever downvoted once, and after talking with the author, we resolved the issue and I removed it. I agree, just ignore content you disagree with or don’t like...not upvoting, not giving it your time and attention is enough.
I have seen some close friends here fall victim to these sorts of downvote rampages...mainly through no fault of their own, but by being loosely associated with a big account in a war (becoming collateral damage). While I have only been hassled by one person (with many different accounts), they are at least small enough not to cause too much damage...still, there is an element of fear every time I post or comment (which is antithetical to freedom and free expression).
BTW, how do you go about becoming an ecotrain member? Is it a specific amount of delegation?

@ecotrain no longer has "membership" per se. Delegation IS thoroughly appreciated :) but not required. Use the tag well on relevant content and @eco-alex or myself will manually curate and support. That's it. No "club" or free seats on the bus just becasue one person has more SP than another - just merit for great content.

Yeah... I have never viewed downvotes as something to use when I disagree with someone. Our communities on here are diverse and I see things I disagree with from time to time but in those cases I don't downvote I just skip the post and don't help it out. Often those same people who posted something I did not like will later post something I do. I would rather just support that content then burn bridges with the person because of a couple areas we disagree over...
Exactly. Carrots and not sticks when it comes to great content.. :) I believe in live and let live, agree to disagree. Even down to supporting ideas that I don't 100% agree with, because my support might or will enable something important for others who DO agree with it.

Happened to me a few weeks back because I commented on a certain witnesses post. That account and their little trail of bots then went and downvoted any active posts and comments.
And like all tantrum-throwing toddlers, there was dead silence after that in no time at all.
And then got a few more because a witness I have voted for - who has never even voted any of my content before - gave me a nice upvote. I then got accused of 'buying upvotes' because I have previously voted for that witness.
Some folk have got nothing better to do with their lives, it seems.

I was downvoted for 8-10 times (for my decent content) and each time it was freaking out shit from me... More and more it happens -- more and more I became used to it. What is symptomatic -- ppl downvote from their other aliaces... that dont produce any content at all! it is ... i d k what about, it is.
my opinion -- each case should be reported to #steemcleaners, they should form sort of watch-lists, and if qualify this abusive pattern, then... what?
I don't really understand @steemcleaners nor their role.... It's really destructive when someone's vote rampage discourages or mutes another contributor.

I have only downvoted once and that was when one guy was asking for steem to remove other downvotes put n place and you know about that case. I have noticed that if I make over a certain amount on a post I get some downvotes but they never give a reason why. If you are going to downvote some one then at least say why, we are all entitled to our opinions, but to use downvotes just as revenge and out of jealousy perhaps? is not okay xx
Not okay to downvote based on a difference of opinion and it always should be explained. Alot of it is revenge, pettiness and attention seeking. Trolls will be trolls - seems we cant help them here anymore than Facebook. It is pretty awful when you get downvoted and harrassed for just commenting on someone you dont like. And then there is all the alt accounts purposely set up for downvoting. Get a life! The downvoting system HAS got rid of bidbots though, and you do get a certain amount free before it starts affecting you. Hence the ones on rampage having -10 reps and being pretty insignificant fleas.
Content downvoting is good so long as its downvoting plagiarism, token farming on shit posts and other crap that as a whole we dont want on steem. Downvoting for difference of opinion is pathetic. I get a couple a post these days, just vindictiveness, jealousy or a buzz for being an asshole, who knows, they never say.. and I take your approach... ignore the little mites.

If you're going to downvote what you call 'token farming', consistent rational thought would also demand you downvote people belonging to multiple steem communities to gain their autovote. It's a fine line. So tagging for your token is ok but tagging for others isnt? I dont buy that. A newbie steem player tagging for multiple tokens is as entitled as you are to tag #ecotrain as well as #naturalmedicine to increase post rewards. That kind of downvoting unhelpful & unfair.
Define shit post? Is that a travel.post which doesnt even bother to tag a location or how to get there? An actifit post? Or just something you dont like? Totally unrelated content and tags. When you look at their history its clear they are playing game. Shit man.. theres one dapp allows a zilliin tags, not sure which one, but that gets ridiculous...😂😂😂😂 all on game to collect as many tokens as possible. There are all sorts of tricks people play to game system. Kudos to them trying, but it is one of the many underhand actions frowned upon. Sure, might be subjective.... but is possible to look at objectivèly on balance with past behaviour. But then we all get judgey on posts, don't we, lol. As we have talked about before, there is stuff that benefits the platform and stuff that doesn't. I will leave it to others to flag though, it makes me squeamish 🤣 I like to do more research on whether its habitual scam behaviour or accidental, and if accidental Id rather chat in private message if it came to that for sure!
