I had a little feast for myself the other day, a plate of warm rice, steamed banana blossom, fried tofu and tons of peanut sauce.
Sound so simple, right? But it's a huge deal to me, keep reading 😉
Growing up in Indonesia, banana blossom is very easy to find, be it from your own backyard, from the traditional market, or even at supermarket. Here in Canada, I could find them once awhile in Chinatown, but obviously, Chinatown mostly exists in big cities, or where the cities/towns have tons of (SE or E) Asian immigrants.
Where we live currently, there are plenty Asians, but from the South (India and/Pakistan), I have never seen a banana blossom here, sadly. We do have one Filipino store, they do have banana blossom occasionally, but in brine, canned, which is very different in flavor and texture.
One day my husband returned from Vancouver and inside his "luggage" - he didn't have any but boxes of grocery 😂😂😂😂, was two fresh banana blossoms!!!
Can you imagine my happiness? Been living in current city (of only 20k) for almost 6 years, and now I get to have banana blossom? 😂 Party it is! 💃
So I steamed one and freeze the other one. I had it the way I would have it in Indonesia, just warm rice and plenty of peanut sauce, yummo!
This following blog is more to sharing the recipe for the fatless peanut sauce actually.
I love peanut sauce, for salad, for grilled tofu/tempe, etc. But obviously, peanut is high on fat and calories, as you may already know, and I am fat already, shouldn't add more pounds 😂
One day while shopping at Costco, I spotted fatless peanut butter powder, known as PB2. I was so excited to try that my husband grabbed 3 jars! Say whaaa.....t???!!Who can eat so much, I thought. But turns out I can. I make peanut butter spread, add it to my dishes, dessert, buns, and of course turn it into peanut sauce, which I will be sharing now.
It's pretty good, less hassles, I can have peanut sauce often, and I don't feel guilty as much 😂
You can definitely adjust the sweetness, stronger garlic flavor, or a tad more spiciness, to your liking 😉
Ingredients
- 1/2 c PB2 powder
- 3/4 c hot boiling water
- 1 tbsp kecap manis, thick sweetened soy sauce, such as Indonesian brand ABC or Dutch brand Conimex - available at Canadian Wholesale, European store, Asian stores, or online
- 1/2 tbsp onion powder
- 1/4 tbsp garlic powder
- chili flakes
How to
- Mix everything and adjust flavor. Should you want thinner, stir in more hot water
- Serve immediately
Banana Blossom
- Peel off a couple layers to discard, steam the rest for 45 minutes
- Serve the middle/soft white part of the blossom
- Serve immediately

That looks so delicious!
Anything is delicious when there is peanut sauce imo 😂
Thanks Nina
Bagaimana rasanya tu mbak.. ??
Disini emang important Dari Negara tropis
Sayang Loh Di Canada jarang ada barang dr Indo, kecuali buku, piring, gelas
Indomie, kecap manis, udang, ada juga
Tapi Bahan lainnya kebanyakan dr Thailand, Malaysia
Sedangkan buah2an Dan Sayuran dr Mexico atau Brazil
Ga pernah makan jantung pisang Jadi?
Apapun kan nikmat kalau pakai sambal kacang 😉
Pernah sih mbak. Cuma cara pengolahan nya yang beda. Jantung pisang disini diolah seperti lazimnya kita Indonesia.
Oh emangnya ditempat oja gimana
Cara diatas Ini sama dgn cara dirumah keluargaku (Di Indo) 😂😂😂😂, kadang direbus kadang Di kukus
Oh, you are going to be even more jealous now!! I have bananas growing in my yard as well and will have a banana blossom to cut soon.
I am going to try it steemed this time.
I learned how to eat it from my Filipino friend but we peel all the outer layer off and pull the pedals, and cut the inner heart part in small pieces. then soak it in salt water, cook it with coconut milk and put vinegar...
We do sometimes add it into soup with coconut milk, but we have to boil it first as some people could taste the bitterness
And yes, jealous!! 😂
And omg really???? Sending me passion fruit? Aren't you sweet ❤️❤️❤️❤️ but I don't think it's possible between countries and it would be too expensive. So don't worry about me ❤️
Yes, that is true. I send some seeds to Canada and it cost me $13 in shipping for a few seeds lol
This is awesome you are a kitchen fairy indeed. Never imagined banana blossom could be prepared like this. I am following the fairy.
Mabuhay!
How do you prepare banana blossom in the Phillipines? Should share the recipe next time 😉
Never knew that banana blossom can be consumed this way (steamed). I am more familiar with the Vietnamese style of preparation (i.e. sliced very thinly and eaten raw as salad).
Pretty strange isn't it, you lived among the Indian and/or Pakistani communities but there is no banana blossom in sight? Indians consumed banana blossom too.
By the way, will tempeh go well with the overall dish in place of tofu?
Oooh I love tempeh
We just don't have fresh tempeh, where I live, unless we make it ourselves and yes obviously you can have tempeh tofu whatever you like
This is the first time I heard the South Asian people also eat banana blossom? We don't have any ethnic stored but one Filipino store. At the big supermarkets only have Indian spices, not even vegetable 😂
Thank you for this information. I've never even heard of banana flowers being eaten . Looks like yummy. :
Some serve it fresh/raw, for salad
I don't like it raw 😂
