When muskmelon seeds started to sprout in the compost, we transplanted a few into a pot then into the ground
They're doing quite well with some heirloom carrots sprouting up between them for both delicious food and pest control. The carrots will soon self seed for a larger crop, and we even got a bonus ...
Wild purslane! A delicious herb that @papa-pepper gave us some information about in his blog a few weeks back.

I always feel like they are the stronger of my plants that can germinate in hot compost.
Right? Melons, squash, and potatoes tend to start in a hot mix whether you want them to or not. If you catch them before a "turn" you can replant them.
Does the smell of carrots keep bugs away?
Carrots, especially heirloom, are naturally pest resistant. They also emit a chemical imprint that repels many plant eating bugs. Since they grow in the same soil as muskmelon, I planted them together.
Thanks for the information! :)
You're very welcome
Nice photos !
Thank you.
That food looks so good right now...
I have some papaya trees that have sprouted from my compost heap! Looks like I'm going to have quite a crop of fruit too.
As for the wild purslane, it pops up everywhere in my yard. I had no idea it was something I could maybe eat!
Purslane is great with eggs and also with red meat. It tastes like a cross between spinach and parsley and has the texture of okra.
That's interesting. I didn't know it was edible!
I have some dried papaya seeds that I need to get in the ground. Are they easy to germinate?
I imagine they must be. I have 5 or 6 trees that popped up from my compost heap. Mind you, there must have been dozens of seeds there in the first place!
Ok I have around 20 ish seeds. I'll give them a try in some post-mix soil.
I see you are in California, so i think they should grow well for you. I just popped out and took this shot with my iPhone. A few are on the ground, but I hope these will grow to maturity!![IMG_2379.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/768x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmQNzaGdoxVeVAKyvGUMzquvgi7rCqx9YEaizpBGNCXKQb/IMG_2379.jpg)
Well, I have a good supply, as i haven't weeded in a while!
Cook some up and give it a try! The leaves and stems are edible, I chop them into manageable pieces to saute.
For presentation, the leaves can be plucked off of the stems and cooked separately.
I'll have to do a purslane recipe when mine is more mature.
Will do! I will go foraging in my backyard later!
I'm really surprised no one wondered what the heck a muskmelon is. Why are muskmelons required to have a church wedding? Cantaloupe 🤣
This is also why you can't marry a honeydew and a watermelon.
Yes, yes indeed.
