Little Pied Cormorant.

There are a few varieties of Cormorant but this post is about The Little Pied Cormorant.

Pied cormorants are common Australian waterbirds. They are characterized by their white underbellies and black feathers on the top.

The Little Pied Cormorant resembles the Pied Cormorant Phalacrocorax Varius but is much smaller with a predominantly shorter bill. Cormorants are found in both fresh and salt water areas and are often seen in large flocks along the coast and in waterways where there is plenty of fish to feed on.

Their diet consists of a wide variety of aquatic animals from insects to fish and they love freshwater yabbies and shrimps. They breed in colonies, or less commonly, in single pairs and use sticks to build their nests which are placed in trees and then they line the nests with green leaves. Both male and female cormorants share the responsibility of egg incubation and caring for their young.

This cheeky pied cormorant lives at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary in Queensland, Australia. He was injured but the staff at the wildlife hospital nursed him back to health.

He was released into the wild but knows the daily pelican feeding time and flies in for a free feed most days.

It was a pleasure to watch the interaction between the cormorant and its rescuer.

Such cool shots and what a cheeky character, released free but makes his way back fro free food lOL

Thank you JJ. Yes, this little pied cormorant was delightful. The staff at the Wildlife Sanctuary only top up the diet for birds that have been set free as they want them to be able to survive on their own. But once a friendship has been established between them and their rescuers, nothing can separate them. 😊

👍🙂👍

Beautiful bird. I've only ever seen photos of them in passing before. He looks like a delightful creature. I'm glad that I found you because I enjoy your writing and your photography. Have a wonderful day!

I'm very happy you enjoyed this blog @wandrnrose and was encouraged by your kind comments. Many thanks. 🌸 💗 🌸

My pleasure 😊

They are indeed beautiful! 😍

Thanks so much for dropping by @gingbabida. 💐

Great shots of the bird. I really liked the ones on rescuer’s shoulder.

Me too Jo. He was very entertaining. 😊

Cormorant is a clever bird as can be seen by appearances knowing the hand that feeds him.

Over here in South Africa ours are black or darker colouration with no white, fondly referred to sometimes as the sea crows.

Lovely presentation and photography.

The fascinating things we learn on Hive. 😊Thanks for your kind visit @joanstewart Isn't it interesting to see similarities between certain birds from other countries? I hadn't heard the term, 'Sea Crows.'

We don't get them up the East Coast of South Africa, they live more south in the Cape region. On occasion we do have them visiting though.

Excellent! It's great to see you posting again, Trudee! :-)

Thank you my friend. It's a good place to be at the moment isn't it? 😃

This is an amazing bird indeed! I often see them here in Ukraine but only black. Now I know they also can be with white neck and belly.
Great shots!

Thanks @zirochka I'm glad you enjoyed reading this blog. Have a wonderful day. 💐

Australian cormorants are so cute! I had never seen them before! The ones we have here are basically solid dark brown save for their beaks...but I still enjoy watching them dive and sunbathe. Thank you for sharing these guys!

Many thanks for your visit and kind support @passerine I'm glad you enjoyed this post. 💐

What a beautiful bird that is and how fun to see it's friendship with the rescuers! That speaks a lot to the trust that was built between them. You have some great photos. Thanks for sharing them with the featheredfriends community! !tip

Yes, you're right about the trust observation @melinda It was such a pleasure to see this taking place. Many thanks for your wonderful support. 💐
