Last week, I successfully completed Veganuary! There were a few small exceptions, such as a New Year's gathering, but for the most part, I maintained a vegan diet. Since I had already done Veganuary last year, it didn't feel particularly difficult. The only real temptation was watching my family enjoy a pizza with gooey, melted cheese 😁

Now, let's take a look at how the final week went!

Meals - A Week with the Pasta Machine

As usual, I cooked a mix of Japanese and Western dishes at home, keeping my meals vegan while my family ate vegetarian. For the final dinner of the challenge, I put extra effort into making dumplings (gyoza) from scratch—including the wrappers! The filling was made by sautéing Napa cabbage, green onions, dried tomatoes, dried shiitake mushrooms, ginger, and garlic, with a little potato starch sprinkled in at the end.

I decided to make dumplings because, during Veganuary, I purchased An A-Z of Pasta by Rachel Roddy, which rekindled my interest in homemade pasta and I took out my pasta machine after a while. I usually roll out the dough with a rolling pin, but using my pasta machine made the process much faster. I simply rolled out the dough and used a jar lid to cut out perfect dumpling wrappers in no time.

Thanks to An A-Z of Pasta, I explored new types of pasta and rediscovered the joy of making my own. I love this book and plan to write a review for Hive Book Club soon.

Snacks - Roasted Beans & Vegan Baking

Since Setsubun, a kind of Japanese carnival was approaching, I made roasted soybeans several times. My family loved them, so I experimented with different methods—microwave, pan, and oven. While they’re often eaten as they are, I also found they make a great topping for rice as you see in the picture on top.

I also baked an apple cake from A New Way To Bake, which I reviewed recently. It came out so deliciously fluffy that my family loved it, and I know I'll be making it again. Since I baked it at night, I couldn't take a good photo before we ate more than half of it the next day 😅

Reflections on Veganuary & My Future Eating Habits

After completing Veganuary, I made a few decisions about my diet moving forward:

  • I will make homemade sweets vegan.
Thanks to A New Way To Bake, I feel confident in making delicious vegan baked goods with simple ingredients. Now it's time to shift to mainly vegan baking.

  • I will keep choosing organic dairy and eggs.
I've been doing this already, but I plan to gradually reduce my consumption too.

  • I will stay flexible in social situations and while traveling.
I appreciate the meals prepared by family and friends, and I might occasionally sample local cuisine on my travels. Being vegan is good, but so are shared experiences and enjoying life with loved ones.

  • I will avoid Bodenhaltung (indoor floor-raised) eggs
While I sometimes overlooked this when staying in hotels, I now feel strongly about choosing only organic or at least free range eggs at hotels.

  • I will minimize processed vegan substitutes.
While many plant-based alternatives are available, I prefer to avoid highly processed ones. Being vegan is important, but so is taking care of my health.

As I write this post, I’m already looking forward to Veganuary 2026! It’s a great opportunity to reevaluate my diet and discover new ingredients and cooking methods every year.

Thank you to everyone who followed my Veganuary journey through these weekly posts ☺️

    『A New Way To Bake』
  • Bodenhaltung(屋内平飼い)の卵は避ける

It was a great refresh, I think? Trying lots of different things and new ways of eating and cooking. I think gradually getting into the pattern of vegan eating is a good way to go.

I'm glad you're enjoying Rachel Roddy's book. She writes a weekly food column in one of the newspapers here (I think the articles are also on her website) and I always enjoy reading them. The recipes come with a whole back-story!

Isn't it Guardian, right? Happy to read that you read her column. I read some of her online columns too. I like her text, it makes me smile. I forgot where but when I read she got mixture of flour and water from her Mama in kitchen as a toy when she was young 😁

Overall, I enjoyed Veganuary and butter on bread afterwards ... (modestly) ☺️

Yes, The Guardian. I make lots of her recipes.

My pleasure. Thank you too for working to make Hive even a better place ☺️

I can't call myself a vegan, but lately I've been ordering more and more of this type of food - it's certainly an order of magnitude more expensive, but I've already lost 16 kilograms!

16 kilograms! My weight stayed the same during Veganuary ... 😇 It can be expensive in restaurants but you can make it with low budget at home by cooking vegetables simply such as roasted root vegetables in this season.

I lost 16 kg in a month and a half - I limited my portions by 75% and that's it. But I don't recommend you do that - I have experience and I feel my body well, but this time I had to see a doctor. I started having some kind of nervous breakdown due to the calorie deficit and the complete absence of sugar. I knew I was going too far, but I liked the lack of a belly in the mirror so much that I couldn't stop. Now everything is fine!

Ah, good to know everything is fine now!
