Context
HIVE Witnesses are the pillars of the HIVE blockchain but many Hivers don’t even know we exist or don’t even care. Those who know and/or care don’t have much visibility on what the “job” involves or how much witnesses earn.
All witnesses need from you is a witness vote that costs you nothing (it does not use your vote power like a post or comment upvote). By voting for a witness, you are telling the blockchain that you trust that Hiver for performing task of signing blocks and keeping the Hive platform stable and safe.
All the transactions (activities) you perform (create/edit posts, comments, upvotes, transfers etc...) on various Dapps (hive.blog, peakd.com, hivesigner.com etc...) have to be witnessed and signed by a software running on a witness node (computer/server) running 24/7/365.25 before being added to the blockchain. This operation can be time consuming and requires some expenses. For doing this work, HIVE Witnesses are getting rewarded with Hive Power for each block that they have signed and successfully added to the blockchain.
Blocks of transactions are processed in rounds of 63 seconds each. In each round, 21 witnesses will be picked to sign the blocks and have 3 seconds to sign. The 21 witnesses in each round are the top 20 witnesses plus 1 witness amoung the remaining (called the Backup Witnesses). The single Backup Witness in each round is selected in a weighted random manner based on their ranking, the higher they rank the more likely they are to be selected.
Every day, the system generates some HIVE tokens that are split into three pools:
- 65% is allocated to the reward pool that is used to pay author and curation rewards.
- 15% is allocated as interest to Hive Power holders.
- 10% is allocated to the Hive Proposal System pool to fund new projects voted by the community.
- 10% is allocated as producer rewards to the HIVE Witnesses for their work for the blockchain.

General Producer Reward HP distribution
There was a total of 200449 blocks produced and 56859.32 HP earned during last week.

Notice the dramatic drop past the rank 20. Remember, each round is composed of each of the Top20 witnesses and one backup witness. This means each Top20 witness has to sign a block every 63 seconds (max), while for a backup witness, it will be much less often. The servers of the Top20 witnesses are thus under higher load/stress than those of the backup witnesses. You need to keep this in mind when looking at their number of missed blocks: 10 missed blocks for a witness at rank 10 does not mean the same as 10 missed blocks for a witness at rank 120 for example.

- Blocks can be missed for various reasons including technical issues, misconfiguration, bugs in a new version of the blockchain software etc... and the higher your rank, the higher the chance it can happen.
- Some witnesses are managing multiple projects for Hive and the communities in addition to maintaining their various nodes and hence don't often post.

- The earnings in USD below are just an estimate and are only effective if the witness are powering down and convert their liquid HIVE to fiat. By keeping their producer rewards powered up, they take the risk of seeing those staked HP loosing value if the market goes down.

- Thanks to @witnesswatch for the original idea, that project seemed to have been abandoned, so I've decided to create my own and add some salt and pepper.
For the top witnesses, it boggles my mind that some have proposals to fund hive infrastructure - when the witness rewards could more than sustain that infrastructure at this stage and at current price of the hive token.
To my understanding, running a full node is not a requirement for a Witness. Also the market is quite volatile so cancelling a proposal is taking a risk of seeing Hive price going down and having the infrastructure unpaid. Now that we are fully decentralised we need something stable.
Maybe the community to un-support those types of proposals until we need to put it back on top. But like with Witness votes, it seems that proposal votes are a little bit too... sticky...
But I agree with you, there are proposals that are overrated and again like for witness votes, your vote and mine don't count for much...
Full node may not be a requirement, but I'm definitely going to support the witnesses that elect to run one over one that doesn't - those full nodes are what keeps the lights on so to speak.
If the witness rewards aren't enough to fund the ongoing network infrastructure, then there's something wrong with the network itself, or the token value.
Hive is incredibly sustainable right now. I hope the witnesses are saving for a rainy day in case it comes.

The requirement I mentioned is what is defined in the whitepaper. But the community is voting for witnesses so the community can set the requirement.
I believe those rules need to be changed a little and distribute more fairly the wealth toward other witnesses below rank 20. Even if you consider the stress load etc and missing blocks...

Anyway great report!!Hi @quochuy i wanna ask you a question: how is possible that the total blocks produced are 801587 if in one week there are 3600 * 24 * 7 = 604800 seconds? So if a block is produced every 3 seconds this means that the total number should be something around 201600. Maybe 801587 is the number for a month?

My report is based on several scripts, some of which are recording blocks coming from the API as they get streamed to me. I will have to check the data recorded.

Here's a detailed list of API and seed nodes with their owners. Also not a requirement, but running a seed is highly recommended. We used to have a lot of seeds (~30 of them) on the STEEM network and very few API nodes (those were very expensive back then). But developing MIRA by Steemit Inc helped reduce greatly the cost of running an API node, and now we have almost an equal number of API and seed nodes. I'd like to see at least more seeds, especially from the top20.

It definitely benefited Justin Sun to vote for his Top20 Steem witnesses.
Top 20 witnesses can do good or real bad to the platform. They have the power of accepting changes to the code of the blockchain which dictate which rules the blockchain will be following. By voting for witnesses you trust (up to 30, which can be updated at any time), you participate into electing who can have the power to defend your interests or attack them.
However, there is no direct benefits, you won't earn more, you won't be VIP in their curation, you won't escape their downvotes etc...
It seems like decentralization is just another word. It doesn't exist. I will not name people, but I have seen witnesses who misuse their power by upvoting those who do oil-messaging to them.
About whether someone is VIP in the eyes of Top20 or not, the evidence is for everyone to see. Justin bribed them and overtook steem.

I'd say that reaching 100% decentralization is difficult. There seems to always be a part that is centralised. For example the frontend https://hive.blog itself is centralised, someone has to own it, if the server behind it goes down it goes down. Ideally, we would want a frontend that is powered by multiple servers, owned by multiple users etc...
That's why Hive developers need to find a solution to prevent this, things like one user should not be able to vote 20 witnesses to the top.
It's too early. Maybe you are right, maybe you'll be proved wrong in the future.
