1938 Chev Pickup

There are pickups and there are pickups but this one is a little different from most all of them.

A good friend of mine traded a flamed 1951 Ford Coupe for this Chev recently. The exterior was just as you see it, but he's put the interior to it. It's a pretty impressive piece of gear. Let's take a look.

It's been slammed and slaughtered. Car junkie lingo for chopped top and lowered ride height. The top is painted and the rest is mostly bare metal. It's a look that is quite popular right now.

I don't know if there is a real Hellhound Garage, but that's the sign on both doors.

Look at the left center, there is a clue. The pickup actually sets on a Mustang II frame. It's got absolutely modern running gear. You can also see the finish on the bed. Pretty nice! Chris says the wheels and tires will need to be changed before he considers it 'ready for prime time'.

You can see a lot of what's been done here. The Chev radiator shell and headlights were retained but modern bulbs and radiator make it a real road warrior. Note the modern fan assembly and Mustang rack and pinion steering. It drives sort of like your family sedan.

This is a motor that can only be described as 'nasty'. It's a 350 CID Chevrolet with roller cam and rockers. That manifold and twin carburetor set up is really racing gear. Note the completely replaced firewall. All custom and hand made, it looks like it belongs there.

This is the part that Chris did. The interior. It's the same fabric and pattern that he used on his previous Ford. You can see some serious touches here. The seats are from a WWII vintage B-17 Bomber, the shifter grip is a carburetor body from a vintage Harley Davidson (he also fixes and rides them)

Yes. It has a rollbar and high grade fire extinguisher-both probably really good ideas for this vehicle.

Gauges and steering wheel and a good look at how small that windshield really is. Yes, that is a genuine shrunken head and it has shown up in every vehicle like this since I've known Chris.

One more detail and I'm gone. Check out the coil cover right here. Sir Walter Raleigh Tobacco can fitted so that it looks like it was made that way. It's the details that make are really good custom.

I hope you have enjoyed this somewhere near as much as I have enjoyed showing it to you. I'll get back to Lassen Volcanic National Park on the very next post, I promise!

Thanks for reading all the way to the end. I really do appreciate it.

Wow! Amazing looking beast!

It really is an amazing piece of gear. There are a whole bunch of little touches that add up to an incredible whole.

That's fancy and yeah it's nasty. It looks really cool in the sea. I wonder how does it feel when it will start running since it looks low.

Have a good weekend by the way.

The frame height is correct for a Mustang II. The frame has been pinched in the middle so the cab will fit down over the frame rails. It looks super low, but it really isn't. It rattles a little under idle due to a really aggressive cam. When he gets at it at all it smooths right out and sounds really nasty. It is a beast.

Rat rods are awesome. So are pickups.

Hope you're well Cobber, having a good weekend I hope.

Yep. I'm having a good weekend so far, and rat rods are awesome. This one might be a little too well built to be a real rat rod. Maybe a really big mouse rod.

That Mustang II frame is pinched to let the cab sit so low. It's really a road warrior.

Looks ratty to me, but then again I'm on my phone and haven't got my glasses on so it could have been a yellow school bus for all I know. 😉

Not a true ratrod of course, you're right...But sort of rattish.

I hope what I wrote here is ok, can't see it properly.

Ahahahaha. That vision problem will get worse as you get older, I just happen to know.

You did good considering you are using the Braille system!

I'm guessing the 'rattish' exterior is there so somebody with a hundred dollar bill might mistake it for something it's not. Freaking thing is bad fast and it drives well. Chris would be happy to show his tail lights for a $100 I'm thinking.

I'd take it...Looks like a lot of fun.

How far behind you am I? (I'm 50).

19 years. Depending on birthdays of course. Never, ever thought I'd live this long!

Not bad, doing well then. Another 20?

GREAT POST!!!

OMG!, it's an awesome ride, it looks pretty cool, I don't even know what to say looking at it from the inner part to it's outdoor that is too much, even it's shape's like that of a bull that's creativity, I can even see a bull sticker tagged on it's door what an idea, WOW!

It is pure coolness. I took the pictures on Thursday and am surprised I waited until Saturday to show it...

And it's REALLY fast.

Magnificent post about vintage cars, we do not see this very often. Thumbs up!

Thank you! I mean Thank you very much!

You best be careful. I have at least 1000 photos of vintage cars and more than that of motorcycles. Just a little encouragement could cause me to repeat the process!

Thanks. I really do appreciate it.

This is a jewel! Love seeing old cars! Never seen anything like this hell hound before! Thanks for sharing!

There is a whole world of 'custom cars', and this is a pretty good example of it. It's really the combination of about 3 genres. It's a pickup to start with, and it's a 'low boy' which is generally reserved for '30s coupes and roadsters. And it all sits on modern running gear.

For me, it's just cool beyond words.

Ohhhhh. How nice. I truly do love old motorcycles. Those are all at least WWII vintage because the suspension changed just shortly after the war. I'm pretty sure one of the OD green (olive drab green-official color of the US Army) ones is an Indian, not a HD.

My friend @princessmewmew had a great answer when asked the 'right' time to post.

Just immediately after the Unicorns poop.

That is pretty awesome. We found ourselves walking through a car show a couple of weeks ago. It was totally a coincidence, but I took as many pictures as possible so I could write a post about it.

I look forward to seeing that post! I just love the little 'pop up' car shows. Most of the cars there are in the 'pride and joy' category!

That interior wow, flaming red ! But why didnt he do the seats , it looks like the seats are metal, thats sits rather hard in the back doesnt it?
And a voodoo dol ghanging from the mirror?

And a voodoo dol ghanging from the mirror?

That is part of his signature :) It lives in every car he does until he sells it.

The seats are a pretty special vintage themselves. They are out of a WWII B-17 bomber. That's what the pilot and co-pilot sat on. They are pretty rare, now days.

Besides, it's really not made for road tripping. :)

Maybe tomorrow I'll catch him on his latest vintage motorcycle: A 1945 Harley Davidson 45. Really rare because all the military bikes (90% of HDs output) during the war are titled 1942. It's pretty cool, too.

Thank you for stopping by!

Ohhh sorry hahahah it looks scary. And the vintage seats are cool and if it’s for small rides ik I guess hahaha I made a blog once about old army bikes on sun STEEM I will try to find it

Hive Power Up Day - Let's grow together!

That is one sweet FRR (faux rat rod) and both the running gear and the interior compliment each other very well. I think your buddy Chris hit a home run with this one.
Thanks for making my day start off in style,
Sult

It is a sweetheart. Chris does not run on the well worn path and his stuff is always cool. He's an artist at heart, and it shows.

He had that '51 that had a stuffed armadillo in the rear window. I'm thinking he doesn't have a place for it in the pickup.

Thats an impressive truck, I went to a car meetup yesterday and got a few shots that I need to work on

surely you have to be playing ZZ Top while driving this? Love the B17 seats touch, nice 😁
