Japanese Curried Beef for Market Friday

in Ladies of Hive3 years ago

This dish is quite easy to make. It uses a Japanese Curry Mix which removes the guesswork on how your curry will come out.

Make sure to cook the meat until it is fork tender before adding the other ingredients. Otherwise you will be wasting good money on the ingredients and on the Japanese Curry Mix, which cost $4.69 (in the grocery where I shop)

Ingredients: Total food cost is $15.79

1 lb of beef chuck ($8.00)

1 large potato ($1.00)

1 large red bell pepper ($1.50)

3 large carrot ($0.70)

salt & pepper just a little to taste ($0.10)

1 pkg Japanese Curry Mix ($4.69)

First, boil the beef in 4 cups of water. If it needs skimming, then do so! Add just a little amount of salt to flavor the meat.

Turn down heat to medium low, and continue cooking until the beef is fork tender, about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes.

⠈⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄

Prepare the vegetables.

Peel and cube the potatoes, seed and cut the red bell pepper, and peel and cut the carrots.

Break the curry mix into pieces. I used a knife.

⠈⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄

Test the meat with a fork after an hour or so. If it is tender enough, it is time to add the vegetables.

Start with the carrots. If you cut your carrots the way it was shown, you will need to add it first. Cook for ten minutes with the lid on.

Next, add the potatoes.

Followed by the Japanese Curry Mix.

Stir and cover for 15 minutes.

Finally, add the red bell pepper. Cook for 1 minute.

It is done!

Serve the Japanese Curried Beef with Steamed White Rice.

YUMMY!

This dish is good for four servings (or three, in my case). That comes to $3.95 per serving, food cost. And it is so delish!!!

Does the Japanese curry seasoning have onion and garlic in it, my older son cannot tolerate those ingredients without quite a bit of discomfort.

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️

I don't put any on mine, since the curry seasoning is full of flavor already.
I suppose you can put some. I left it out!

Quick and easy, never seen Japanese curried beef we eat Indian curries here, some available in sachets prepared. Normally make from scratch with fresh garlic, ginger and spices being able to adjust to taste and heat on the plate.

I used to make Indian Curry from scratch using turmeric, cumin, coriander and garam masala.
I now I use this prepared mix.
It comes in mild, medium hot, and hot. I prefer medium hot!

Short cut does help, mix and match with long recipes or short depending on mood, also who I am cooking for, some like it mild (waste of time), then others enjoy to spice up life 😃 worthy of going the extra mile.

Have to heard of this? Thai cooking uses a lot of peanut sauce. I will learn this one, when I have the time. I just got it!

No have not seen that, let us know what it tastes like 😃, looks interesting.

Can one use any other Curry mix if no Japanese curry mix isn't available? I think I prefer slicing my red ball pepper with the carrot because I wouldn't be able to eat it that way. I am craving for the meal already and I would be forced to make something like this in the week. 🙈🙈

Yes, you may!
Just use turmeric, cumin, coriander and garam masala.

That looks delicious and I just learned something new! I have never even heard of Japanese Curry. I am so behind! I have only ever made the Indian Curry. Do you know the difference in flavors?

Thanks so much for giving the step-by-step of it and for all the great pictures! I can honestly say that I wish I could jump right through the screen and get a taste! Thanks for being part of #MarketFriday!

Hi @dswigle! Don't worry your lovely head on being late! Being late is better than not coning at all, hehehe 😀

Japanese curry recipe is sweeter, thicker, and less spicy than the Indian-inspired curry powder. And it is less oily... more "saucy". It is... milder. That's it, it is milder!!! While Indian Curry is strong and bold.
You know, I have an Insta-pot. I don't know why I bought it when I have a pressure cooker. You can use a pressure cooker to soften the meat, or cook the curry using the Insta-pot.

I love #MarketFriday 😍!

I have both too! 😐 I have no idea why I keep both, but, the Insta-Pot was a gift for Christmas when they first came out. Thanks for the explanation! I appreciate it and it sounds like I would like it.

Thanks again!

My pantry top shelf has some on the gadgets, etc... it is getting full!!!
