Huddle Up

I can't remember the last time I watched a Super Bowl live, but I decided that with my loose schedule, I would grab a pass for the matchup between The Eagles and the Chiefs. It was only 99c through DAZN, which is a pretty good deal! It comes with the pregame show, US commentary, and the halftime show and the adverts - since the kickoff is at 130am here, I probably won't watch it all anyway, nor do I care about the shows (nor really the game itself since Washington isn't there), but it is nice to do something different for a change.

I know this is a big event in the US, but my question is perhaps a bit sensitive....

Do Americans ever get tired of all the forced patriotic content?

At least to me (and I am guessing many outside the US), it all seems very cheesy and over the top rehearsed. All the flags and all the celebrities adding their feigned heartfelt gravity to the narrative. Do Americans really get inspired by this kind of spectacle? In some way, it reminds me of a glitzy, glamorous, sparkly, high-end version of what might be seen in North Korea to celebrate the leader's birthday. Less tanks.

And, I think I have been out of the "TV advert game" for too long, because none of them seem to make me want to do anything, other than turn them off. It is like the sound is too high, the voices too annoying, and the funny bits are well, unfunny. I feel like a grumpy old man shouting at neighbourhood kids who stole some apples off my tree.

Is it just because I am not American?

Of course in all countries I assume that there are people wearing national flags and all that, but it seems to be one of the strengths of the US that no matter how much people don't get along, fly an American flag together and everyone is like well, that is okay - we're all in it together. Its like it excuses any kind of behaviour. I have never been to the US, so it is hard to get a gauge of what daily life looks like, but I would be interested to hear some perspectives here on what people's experiences are from the country, or have spent enough time there.

Anyway, the game is about to start, so hopefully I will see some football between the stream of adverts made by people who seem to have no notion of the idea of subtlety. But hey, perhaps it is the audience they are creating for, that drives the production design. As it should of course.

Right - coin toss incoming.

It's more about the ceremony I think, which I can kind of a appreciate. It's not so much about it being overly patriotic. Even though it is definitely patriotic adjacent. I'd view it like the changing of the guard in England. I've never heard anyone really complain about that.

Oh, I think it is silly pomp :D

I get the ceremony for the Superbowl, but it seems like it is for everything - is that the case?

Big events yes. Parades, sporting events, pretty much anywhere where people gather together to celebrate or something like that. It's mainly thanking our soldiers for giving us the right to freely do those things. You are probably right though, they do it so frequently that people probably don't appreciate it the way they should. It's more habit than something special.

And I think this is what I am more getting at. It gets forced so often, it loses meaning.

I don't care at all about any of the patriotism. The military flyover is such a waste of taxpayer dollars. It was revealed that the US Army pays the NFL millions of dollars to have the flag out everywhere and keep the national anthem as a focal point of the pregame festivities. I don't know any friends in my age group that get fired up about the patriotism. Maybe it had traction with my parents' generation, but millennials don't give a f*ck!

Seriously? Shouldn't this be something on the DOGE chopping block? :D

Do you think this is somehow a shame, like it is a reflection of how things have changed?

I'm not convinced it is a shame that we are not patriotic to our nation's military symbolism. Most people have moved on from the US being a warring nation, so we see the military symbolism as a sign of excess spending and unnecessary violence.

Even in my parents' generation, they had the Vietnam War, and neither of my parents supported that war either. Maybe there is some patriotism for the US when we compete in the Olympics or other national sporting competitions, but that is just about the only time I find myself rooting for the flag.

I think the Super Bowl is overrated. However, not only they but the whole world is accompanying them and exaggerating it.

For sure. It is often one of the worst games of the season too!

I think many people see it as just an exaggerated show, as you described. And there are those who ignore it completely because it has become just a part of everyday life.

I believe that mass media in countries is controlled by goverments to influence their citizens. A government can easily make an important thing forgotten thanks to a sport game, particularly a derby.

I am not a football fan and didn't watch Super Bowl. But I do appreciate the patriotic display, I think it is good to feel as one nation even if there is a deep disagreement between the two sides in America.

I appreciate the opportunity I got here and I identify as an American. Every time I come back to US from abroad I feel happy and that I have arrived home.

Why on earth would you be shouting at neighbourhood kids for stealing apples off your tree? o_O

But then again I'm of the opinion that everyone should plant fruit trees and grapevines and berry bushes on their front fences XD And vege planters just outside would be pretty cool too but they seem harder to manage (especially if you have a stupid council).

Did you enjoy the game?

I used to care about the NBA All Star game some twenty years ago. I still kind of do but last time I saw it it was not a game at all. No effort into it, no competition, just a free pass to anybody to go at the ring and abuse it in whatever way they would think of.

It wasn't like that in MJ and Kobe times and before that. There was less foul play but still there was also this thing called defense.

I guess the super bowl is at least as competitive as it can be.

Hi grumpy old man, (just holw old r u.. i am 50 y/o)

not so much inspired as it is brain washed.. fed all that politics and consumerism.
