October Can't Come Fast Enough

I am looking forward to October. I will enjoy the cooler temperatures that it will bring. However, what I am really looking forward to is all the activies planned with one of the local veteran groups I belong to.

Tuesday evening was the monthly meeting of one of the groups. We accomplished alot in this short one hour meeting. We managed to plan and schedule a couple fund raising and organizational activies.

Another event in October a group picnic planned at one of our member's house. It will be a potluck and sure that adult beverages will make their way to the gathering as well.

One of the activities I really look forward to is what is called Toys 4 Tots. We collect new unwrapped toy donations starting in October and lasting through December. These toys will then go to local kids in need for Christmas.

I have a new responsibility for the group, and that is that I am the recorder of the meeting minutes and help the groups leaders communicate out correspondance from our state and national leadership.

There was a little nerves taking on this responsibility. One of my medical condition symptoms is brain fog. It occurs often and impacts my ability to recall short term, and sometimes, long term memories. But, I did really well and the group was patient with me if I had to stop and ask someone to repeat something.

Anyway, next Tuesday I have breakfast with one of the older guys (Vietnam War vet) and then we are picking up the empty boxes so we can start setting them out at different cooperating businesses. Looking forward to that coffee and breakfast with him. He is a good guy and always a pleasure to be around.

Anyway, this post is longer already than I thought it would be. Just wanted to get something out there so you all wouldn't think I was completely without something to write about these days.

Hoepfully October brings many reasons to have something to post about.

I think what you guys are doing is great. Not only have by you all built by a bond through your past service, you're also contributing back to society and helping those in need. Hat's off to you all.

If you're worried about missing information from the meeting you can always ask the others if they're ok for you to record it so you can listen back if needed. There are many free recording apps on phones nowadays.

And there's nothing called a too long post as long as you're not waffling or bs, don't worry about that.

Thank you. I hope the kids think it is great too. We just want to continue serving in some way. It is a matter of finding purpose for me again, which I have struggled with for a while since retiring medically.

I tried using the standard recording app that comes with my phone. It just doesn't catch most of the conversations. Especially if people are further from the phone. We have discussed this, and are looking at solutions like you recommend.

You never have to worry about a post being too long from me. I am usually a short order blogger, haha.

It's coming fast... Soon there will be a serious chill in the air at night for you! Toy for tots is a great program and a good one to help out. I think it's great you're getting out and participating with them, it may even help that old brain fog some. I've had the same issue since I had COVID so I know what you mean. I'm glad those recording responsibilities went well. Keep it up, it sounds like it gives you some extra purpose and helps fill in some of that spare time and idle hands...

Yeah, the chill is okay. Freezing I can hold on, but just glad the hot is almost over. Yeah, I think filling all that spare time is what I needed to bring back some purpose you know.

I too look forward to cooler weather. Bring on the sweat shirts and fall jackets. Also putting the lawn mower away for the season will be nice, haha.

Great your involved with a veteran group. Toys-for-Tots is an excellent thing that is around everywhere here. It can be tough finding purpose after serving. I'm fornate to still be around it although I don't wear the uniform now. I'm happy and thankful to put my contributions in still right along side uniform members.

I can remember talking to WW II vets a lot but they are now national treasures as there aren't many left. The Vietnam guys are the next to dwindle down unfortunately. It's always a pleasure to listen to those that served before us. There perspectives and experiences are great to hear.

Yeah, I am done with yards. We put a Weed & Feed mixture on ours this last spring. Needless to say most of our yard was weeds and it killed it. So tired of looking at it. I'll deal with it next spring.

I had some good jobs after I retired from the Corps that gave me purpose, but now retired early for medical reasons. It has been a struggle to find my footing again.

Yes, it is sad the WWII folks are almost all gone. They were a wealth of information and stories. Sadly our Korea and Vietnam folks aren't far behind now. However, the guys in my group from that era seem to be getting on better than I do. LOL

I'm looking forward to October too quite honestly. We are supposed to have temps in the 60's this weekend, then back up to the high 80's next week. I will be happy when the back and forth is all over. I have some trips planned in October that should be fun too.

Our temmps will be similar, maybe a little warmer down here. Yeah, that yo-yo effect of tempartures really gets to sinuses and stuff. Looking forward to your posts from your trips. Any place in particular you have planned to go? If your coming south, let me know.

Nope, pretty much all North for the remainder of the year. We are heading down to Ft. Wayne in a couple of weeks to watch my niece play softball though.

Yeah Fort Wayne might as well be Michigan to me, haha. Enjoy the game when you do go. I hope they are good hosts there.

I figured :) It's only about 3 hours from where we live apparently. It will still be a long day on the road.

Toy drive collections will start about the same time here, motor cycle clubs distribute the toys far and wide into rural areas, it's a highlight for many children.

Great you are involved with people you are comfortable with sharing similar experience in life, helping others always brings pleasure meeting new folk, keeping oneself busy and happier for it.

!BEER

They are starting up all the holiday fundraisers around here soon. We actually have a motor cycle ride to collect toys coming up eventually. I don't ride, but will probably be helping collect the toys.

It is something I enjoy greatly.

People go out to watch the bikers go down the freeway they do it over a weekend, it really is a massive event to support the children.
