Splinterlands Strategies: A Daily Return for just $27?

in Splinterlands3 years ago (edited)

“How about you give me £20 and I’ll invest it into something that will give you a daily return?”

@bingbabe was buying those stupid lottery cards again, the ones where you are guaranteed to lose, but somehow they make you feel otherwise.

She doesn’t have many vices but this one grates on me, especially when I see £20 or £30 wasted on them.

Investing is something I have been trying to push on her for some time. Unless you can guess a complete strangers' phone number in the street then you are not going to win the big one.

That's about the odds of winning the lottery or getting anything other than a few quid from these gambling cards.

As well as that she expects ME to occasionally collect her pitiful winnings, that is go to the store and sheepishly hand over the 'winning' card retrieving £3 in cash for the £5 price of it.

It’s fucking embarrassing, I tell you. I feel like a sad loser gambler, wear a big long cowl and mumbling, 'I think this is a winner' to the assistant.

Bings-cards account.JPG

Today I created a @bings-cards account, spent £20 (approx. $27), and will place all the cards I buy for rent.

There is no requirement to buy a Spell Book to just rent, although this may come later if she buys into the idea.

What I will show you now is what to buy, from a renters perspective in order to get a trickle of DEC coming back into your account daily.

Older cards (OOP), forget it. They are too expensive. This leaves current in-print cards as feasible purchases.

image.png
...'technically an amazing 428% ROA, but most of the time L1 cards don't rent. Too much competition and easy to buy'...

Common and Rare cards at Level 1(L1) will yield you a measly 0.1 DEC a day. Forget those.

I figured I would start at Epics as they are not in any Spell Book, have some kind of demand, and can be bought in multiples with my budget.

I won't discount Rewards cards even though they are as plentiful as Magic the Gathering's ill-fated expansion, Fallen Empires which was released in 1994.

image.png
Source
...'Like many, I bought Fallen Empires, I wish I had not bothered'...

The word was, Wizards of the Coast dug holes and buried thousands of them. It could all be bullshit as the internet had barely taken off in that year. It was hearsay.

Unlike the quality of 'that' expansion, the current swathe of reward cards is quite decent and does have demand.

Chwala-ROA.JPG

I was amazed by the ROA of Reward Epics given their lack of rarity. Up to 100% return, well I'm having some of those!

Renova-ROA.JPG
...'125% ROA for a L3 Djinn Renova, try asking your Bank Manager for that kind of return and see what he says'...

Order placed for 4 x Lava Launcher, Djinn Renova, Uraeus, and Djinn Chwala.

For all these, I will combine them to L2, as they can be used in the Bronze league with a L2 summoner.

Lava-ROA.JPG

They are all a little above 50c in today's valuation. Not long ago, they were all above $4, some topping $5.

Reward-EPIC.JPG

It's almost a 90% off sale. They could go lower, but I am not buying to re-sell. It doesn't matter.

CL-EPIC.JPG

I then looked at the Chaos Legion valuations. These are a lot pricier considering my budget of $27.

As I have multiple rented out on my @chops.support account, I could easily compare the return.

Gem-ROA.JPG

Two of the cheapest cards, namely Gem Meteor and Hunter Jarx were looking good.

Order placed for 4 x Gem Meteor and Hunter Jarx. I will keep these at L1 for renting.

I was at $16 and had another $11 burning a hole in my pocket, so it was on to the Legendary cards.

Reward-LEG.JPG

Harklaw, Djinn Biljka, and Djinn OShannus were looking good. Can you believe the latter topped $50 a few months ago?

Because it is cheap, does it mean it's less effective?

RewardLegs-ROA.JPG

One of each added to the order thanks!

With a few dollars left it was a matter of getting something worthwhile. I added a couple of extra dollars and grabbed a Torrent Fiend with a bid of under $6.

image.png

0 Mana monsters are always going to be in demand, and with Water being so popular now, it’s a case of diversifying a little and making sure the investment is constantly rented.

Fiend-ROA.JPG

More than 50% ROA looks decent, and so that makes up the £20 buy. It was around $29.

It may take a little while to fill them all, but some have already landed in my inventory.

image.png

I will move them over to the @bings-cards account as soon as the orders fill, level them up (if required), and immediately place them for rent.

@bingbabe handed over the crisp £20 when I mentioned this just an hour ago. Getting her interest in this ever-so-small investment is another matter.

image.png
...'this L2 Djinn Chwala rented within minutes at a cool 99% ROA. The DEC is already coming in'...

The eyes glaze over within seconds once I started talking about it. I feel you need to get to a point in life where you have to think about what you are purchasing and whether it's going to pay dividends.

She has not yet reached that point and getting her to it may be a challenge.

Man oh Man!!! This is such a cool idea. I have my cards and play in bronze but really have no understanding making money with the game. I love how you are thinking and would love to learn more about how to do this. This might be the most important post I've read in my 5 years on steem/hive lol. Keep us updated on this please.

Good you found it useful, the more you invest the more you get.. same as everything else. I do intend to do a follow-up in maybe a week to see how this has been going. The season ends in a few days and that's time to make a killing.

Now, the question is.... has bingbabe ever one any significant amount on the scratchies?

£10 to £15... they do give some back if you buy a sheaf of them. I see often people getting their winnings and then getting more cards with the loot. Talk about anti-compounding!

How come I am not allowed to sell them?

You could stand outside the convenience store and undercut the 'official' tickets if you really wanted!

Set up a private lottery with a group of whales and slowly wind it up until it can compete against the national lotteries. I don't think it should be illegal - it is just a service, right?

The cards are part of the National Lottery.., I don't see why not. I have a certain 'friend' who likes to boast about his winnings with these on Facebook. Of course, he doesn't mention all the losses. Is it just me who loathes this type of thing?

50% return???!!! I'm on 6% only, but then it's all passive income even though it's only peanuts as I was told it's better to rent them out and not get anything at all. Having said, that, I just went to check some of my cards and spent 10 minutes looking at them to improve my return which seems to go against the low maintenance passive income thing. I wonder if I should leave them as is, but then the return might drop to nothing one day....

Its all about learning to use PeakMonsters. Peanuts yes.., but she's doing very well I say. Some cards at certain levels yield a superior return. It's all very bearish right now, a great time to buy while the others panic and sell.

image.png

Flaming flim flang. This is a great idea. I might do one for the Good Lady! She has an account on here already I will suggest it to her. Although I might not be able to prise 20 bucks out of those cold hard hands :OD

Its peanuts considering the value of DEC, but what do you expect from a lousy £20? I'm sending them over, and they are being rented out. Come end of season they will get a boost as I apply my Slumlord skills to the rent.

image.png

I have decided to do similar. I will attempt to slumdog it at the end of a season too. When do you up them? A couple of days before or more?

Its a genius idea for fun. :OD

When do you up them? A couple of days before or more?

That has all been fucked up by the latest rental bug. This EOS is going to be different and a new learning curve again. I'm kind of pissed off that they haven't fixed it yet.

I noticed they had shortened them. It made me half feel like setting a middleground and hoping it evened out so I didn't have to faff around so much

can you make a post about slumlord skills. I don't have any?

Yes you can. It's easy. Just type them and press publish.

I haven't looked at my rentals in a while because the return has been so horrible. I just wish there was an easier way to manage all of them. It is quite the pain right now. Easier than it used to be, but still not really worth the time sometimes.

I was surprised by the return of Reward cards. They are better than most any of the other cards, including OOP ones. Perhaps its the low prices. I will get some more for myself... just to rent.

Good luck with that. I will likely get around to checking out my rentals at some point. For now I am mainly focusing on my dailies and brawls.

You need to learn how to handle PeakMonsters. It's all so easy once you know how.

Too much clicking...

Not in PeakMonsters, its really easy and quick. Those guys deserve a lot of credit and save me a lot of time.

I will have to give it another look sometime.

I expect you are raking it in on your other accounts. That will cover the cost of her scratch cards. I'm doing okay from renting, but not spending too much time on optimising it. I have better things to do.

That will cover the cost of her scratch cards.

I don't take any out, it's all quite bearish right now, a bad time to sell. When people get scared and sell, I buy. There will be times later to sell, when its a lot higher. Optimising rent is easy and fast if you know how to use PeakMonsters.

As a fellow Brit i had to laugh at the lotto statemate! So damn true!

You've inspired me to look into doing the same, expanding my renting game! I was quite adverse in dropping fiat into Splinterlands, but this could possibly be the way to go.

Take it easy man!

PS - do you like card tricks? If you do please come on over to my page and watch some of my card magic storytelling video/shows! Thanks!

It annoys the fuck out of me. Praying on the weak-minded I say. I hope you are on @steevc's Brit List. He maintains it and updates it.

As for the cards, do some playing and renting. But if you rent, you don't have the CP for rankings. You can't have it both ways.

Understood, thank you Slumlord. I will mention you in my upcoming Splinterlands posts.

supernice post!
Would be easier for ur @bingbabe to fall inside the rabbit hole if she should just have a look at a peculiar rank of all cards to immediately find the best ones for her investment purpose?

I'm working on building such a thing, if you like, have a look at my first 3 posts on this topic

I'm looking for a little clarification. Are saying that I could buy a gem meteor and then just put it on the rental market and it would have decent ROI. I don't really know peekmonters that well

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I haven't been able to buy any Gem Meteors, nobody seems to want to let go of them. My intel tells me they rent well at L1 and yield a decent ROA. You need to learn to use PeakMonsters, that's what makes this happen. They do provide tutorials.

Your Splinterlands posts are my favourite posts on Hive at the moment. They always give me food for thought. I have to leave the Beta train go myself. Spent ages saving Dec to buy a level 4 flesh golem while I could just be buying up Chaos legendary's and epics. Its funny the way us Splinterlands type look down on the wifes buying scratch cards when we go off an buy a digital monster card and we think she's the one that has blown her money. Haha.

Wow. Great post. 1. It's great to have this kind of guidance about making a small investment in Splinterlands cards for rent. I don't know whether I want to do it, but, clearly, now is a good time. 2. About lottery tickets: I remember, after taking an advanced-ish statistics class in uni, I fully realized the improbability of ever winning the lottery. I discussed it with my father because he occasionally buys lottery tickets, but he is also both frugal and a pure Mathematician. His behaviour puzzled me. Why would you ever buy a lottery ticket, I asked him. I understand other people doing it, but not him.

He explained and I think he called the concept a utility function, but I am senile and I may be conflating concepts. However, here is the theory: on the one hand, the probability of a big lottery win is staggeringly low. It is so low that one should anticipate losing. On the other hand, if you keep the amount that you spend on tickets to a minimum then the cost of this constant loss is negligable and relatively painless. By contrast, in the unlikely event that you win, it would make a profound difference to your life, and this cannot happen without the small loss.

This explains why it makes sense to spend a very small amount on a lottery ticket every now and then, especially if there is a high jackpot. People do win, as unlikely as it is. My fiancé has an aunt who literally won a million dollars (Canadian, but still) about two decades ago.

Of course, you might already realize all of this. It just drives me a bit nuts both when people mistakenly think that if they spend more on the lottery, they will win more (the amount the probability of winning rises by is usually not significant), and also that it is not worth it to play. The latter is mathematically accurate in a technical sense, but negates the fact that, for example, here, a lottery ticket of less than $10 can yield winnings of millions. It most likely won't, but in the very unlikely event that it did, you would have millions all of a sudden. And, if they don't, you only lose in most cases about $5 here.

The scratch tickets are more of a rip off though, in my opinion. I wonder if you gifted her with a small crypto account during this bear market, if she might get into crypto when it turns to a bull market. Of course, that could end up being the least appreciated gift of all time.

It's funny because my fiancé knows very little about crypto. Funny because it seems like it is usually the guy who is into it. I tried to show him -- "What if I die... you have to know how to get my crypto!!!" That whole eyes glazing over thing... I left instructions, but, clearly, I have to remain alive because, otherwise, my crypto will be gone!

I refuse to apologize for the length of this comment.
