I feel the same when you said that the best adaptation are the one where there is a clear goal or mission and this understanding will help improve getting more adaptations to work in this industry.
Although I am not a huge fan of Marvel games but they have done wonders with their spider man series. Been doing that for years. And the more I think the more I realise that is it not only the story or protagonist, it is the complete package that has to be good for a game to work well. Everything including the story, graphics, combat, progression, gameplay, music all these factors can make or break any game.
Good point. It is important for a video game adaptation to have a clear objective and goal if it is to be successful. Even if the story isn't the most important thing, it has to be engaging enough to keep the players' interest (with variations so that it's not a carbon copy of the source material, be it movies or books).
