Hello Hive!
In todays post I wanted I wanted to talk about my recording process for when I create videos.
This is my computer, or my home studio if you like 😂. There's wires everywhere, however I've managed to shove the majority of it behind my desk, (shhh don't tell my housemate).
Recording gameplay is actually a pretty simple process, as there's a vast amount of different programmes that you can use. The most popular one is OBS Studio and its completely free! OBS allows me to record my screen, record computer audio and also allows me to record microphone audio.
Another feature that this programme supports is multi-track recording. In a nutshell, this means I can assign my computer audio to one track, and my microphone audio to another track. They both record at the same time, but when I upload the file to an editor, it would mean that I would be able to change the volume levels of both tracks independently of one another. This is useful because it would mean that I could make my voice louder, or the gameplay quieter without changing the volume of the whole recording.
(OBS on the left, Audacity on the right)
It looks like I have a lot of sources running and capturing things, but in reality most of those sources are hidden, (meaning they aren't actually capturing anything), or I don't actually need because they're left over from when I use to stream. I'm just to lazy to tidy it up basically 😂.
The programme open on the right is Audacity. I use this programme to record my microphone audio, (I'll get on to why I record this separately in a moment).
This is a screenshot of the editing software that I use, Wondershare Filmora X. Filmora is by far the cheapest editing software out there, or at least it was when I checked. I think I paid £45 to keep it permanently. There is a free version of it, in which you get access to maybe 75% of all its features, however anything that you export will have a big Wondershare watermark plastered over the front of it.
I'm very happy with Filmora, and it comes with lots of copyright free music, stock images, basically anything you need to to edit a video with. There's only one thing that I don't like about this software; it doesn't support multi-track recording ðŸ˜. This is why I use Audacity to record my microphone audio; I'm then able to make adjustments to my gameplay volume or my voice as and when I need too.
What software do you use or do you have any recording/editing tips that I could use? I'd love to know!
This is really interesting. I’ve not heard of Audacity before. I’ll dig it out and have a look.
OBS is great. I can see how the work flow works really well for gaming videos.
Have you ever considered filming yourself gaming, rather than just audio? Or are you not interested in that element?
HERE if you’re interested)and he once documented his process here which might be of interest to you.My Hive pal @nicolcron did some really entertaining gaming videos called ‘3 Coins’ (see one of them
3 Coins was a great run and cool concept he came up with, which he explains at the start of each video. He plays old arcade games and has three coins worth of lives to play before he gives up. It’s loads of fun!
Brilliant to see you doing this gaming stuff man and it’s in a community that should appreciate 😀
I wanna see more vids!
Yeah, Audacity is great for audio recording, (it’s free too!)
Recording with a webcam is definitely something I’ve thought about, but I think for now I’m just gonna do audio.
3 coins sounds amazing! I’ll definitely check it out. I did something similar once, but I’ve never really gone back to it to be honest.
I know @atomcollector uses OBS to do his live video shows. Seems to work well, apart from when he forgets to un-mute himself :) There are lots of great open source tools.

I've used Audacity a lot for recording and editing stuff like podcasts. It's a good editor. If I'm doing more complex audio stuff I use Ardour that is more like Protools. I am not so into video. I have looked at using OBS, but not had much success so far. I need to try it again. I use Linux on my PC, so the options can be more limited.

I have to admit, I’ve never used Linux myself.
Ardour sounds intriguing, I’m gonna have to do some research.
If you aren’t interested in doing video then OBS probably isn’t worthwhile using. If you do ever decide you want to though, I definitely recommend!
I do make basic videos of me playing music. It could be good for mixing in backing tracks. The Linux tools are generally pretty good and it's easier to use these days.
I consider Audacity to be mainly an audio editor with some recording capability. Ardour is a full multitrack system with real time effects. It can do far more than I need really, but as it's free to use I get the benefits. I do actually pay them something anyway. I wish some open source projects were on Hive so I could support them with votes.
Have fun with your videos.

I can’t say I’ve ever heard of that one, I’ll definitely give it a look though
