Malabar Spinach - Summer garden update

in HiveGardenlast year

One of the first plants I got started in my garden is coming up with delicious leaves and shoots. It is known as a spinach though it is not the same as the kind that is grown annually. The leaves are thicker and hold up well when cooked. The rest of the plant is edible as well, including the seeds both ripe and unripe. I am really glad we got to harvest some greens this year, and it happened to come from this vining plant. And all being in the raised beds make me happy these are being used.

With just a few months of growth this vine has made its wall all the way to the top of this trellis. It would appear it will make its way all the way over eventually.

Not sure if the vines will survive the winter, or die back and make another attempt next year to conquer the trellis.

I leave the shoots at the end alone so they can keep growing as fast as possible. Though I think if I cut them back it would just top the vine and make it form new growth.

The fruits have no flavor to them, but the ripe ones have little seeds in them.. Not hard to chew through as they are quite soft.

When we cook them we take the leaves, and immature shoots and seeds. The ripe ones can just be eaten raw on the spot.. well all of the plant can, but we just do not prefer to cook the mature fruit.

This plant has needed almost zero training getting up the trellis, it wrapped itself around once I guided it towards the steel welded wire fence.

Vining plants are known to grow quick but one that is edible like this is especially impressive to me.

Looking at it from the inside of the trellis it gets a lot of light from both sides.. Lol my white shirt is washing out the video in some of the scenes.. sorry about that.

Insects seem to leave them alone, I guess spinach is not their favorite.

Really curious to see how its perennial nature handles the winter here. I expect it to completely die back to the ground. And then form new growth once the spring starts again next year.

But until then I will enjoy this plants leaves and shoots to eat. And just cool to see such a vigorous plant grow over the lattice in the raised beds. Maybe that hugelkulture is working overtime to feed this plant.

I am very surprised by the nature of plants in general, all of them have a characteristic and design that surprises me a lot, for example, the type of plants that are entangled, here they are known as climbers, and there are different types, many use this to decorate the facades of their houses.

Greetings, I hope your crops in general continue to prosper. A and also your construction work is excellent.

Yeah climbing plants are really cool, its easy to notice how quickly they grow.

Thank you, hope you are doing well too. Much appreciated :-)

Oh nice, good to see you have grown it and made good use of it in dishes. Gotta try frying them.

Gotcha, okay I will keep that in mind about the seeds. The tender shoots do not have seeds yet so we like eat those.

Hey @solominer I'm happy I came across your post. I've never seen such a running spinach, had no idea such thing exists, but I love it. I usually buy mine from the farmers market because it's easier, but this type is a different story. I hope to see it next year too. That arched fence is an amazing idea and it looks like perfect for the spinach. Good luck with the rest of the garden.

Glad I have some gardening posts to share now, feels like all I have done is construction for the last few months. Yeah it is unusual in that way it climbs, quite different from the traditional spinach most of us know.

Thank you, hoping to grow many more vining plants on the arch.

Wao impresionante!!!

Hah yeah bud

Wow I had never heard of that kind of spinach before. I thought I had caught up with all of the pictures and explanation and then discovered the video at the end with more info.

I bet they will wither and die in the winter only to start the climb again in the spring. I wonder if you will have to be diligent in collecting those seeds so they don’t spring up too many new ones every year.

Yeah it was new to me just a year or so ago. Its quite the cool plant to grow, super easy and full growth to eat.

True, I may need to collect some of those seeds to grow another. Thought I could always buy another cutting of it from ebay like I did with this one.

Malabar is good, grows better in the south. I grew it up here a few years ago but it took it 2 months to be of any size to harvest from. It did survive some frosts. One you might try is the New Zealand spinach which is similar in texture but is not vining, and gets pretty massive.

Oh cool, well they should do well here then. It should be a little warmer here so hopefully it grows well.

Oh okay I will have to look into that kind of spinach and maybe try growing next year.

Better be careful not to give away your location.. otherwise Popeye might come burgle you..

Hah, hopefully he only likes the annual variety.

It's lovely to see that Malabar making a bonding with the curved fence.

Yeah it took right to it, only needed a little help at first and then it just twined itself all around it.

These look really interesting. I wanted to know more about these plants when you shared them last time, so it's great that you made this video. I'm also curious about the taste haha.

Ah perfect, well glad I did a follow up post on them.

The flavor is quite plain, not bitter or anything. It reminds me of eating sweet potato leaves.

Man I love the video of you dropping spinach knowledge!
"Sorry got spinach in my teeth" Love it! 😂
You're a gifted man, keep on doing your thing brother!

Hah! That was quite unplanned.. thanks man glad you liked the video. Will do!

Thats a really big garden! :D Looks awesome!

Thank you, it sure is :-)

I am glad you like it, I thought it was better raw than cooked. You might want to save some of the seeds in case you have a cold winter with freezes. I know some plants you can mulch well in the winter and they will survive but I am not sure about this one. Maybe Google can tell you.
Once you cut it it will be bushier, I understand why you didn't but next year try it when it is smaller, you will have more shoots coming from it.

I just have to ask, how can you wear white and garden? You look nice but I would be filthy.

Thanks, yeah it is surely tasty raw as well. Oh okay, I will pull a few fruits off and collect them.. good idea. But yeah I will mulch it well and hope for the best.

Hehe yeah the white clothes do get dirty, alot of them have a orange hue to them from all our clay dirt. Id rather wear white and reflect the bright sunlight than a darker color and slowly get cooked.
