Krakow under snow & little guessing challenge

in Liketu3 years ago (edited)

Hi there my Hivean friends and followers!

I am going to show you 3 photos of Krakow covered in snow. The first two were taken from a terrace of a cafe found in the city center. The cafe is located on the top of floor of a tall building so the terrace comes with some beautiful panoramic views of the city.

The dominant feature of the first shot is the magnificent St. Mary´s Basilica, one of the most famous architectural landmarks of the city. You can see it in the second shot as well (the viewing angle of the terrace is not very wide, unfortunately) but if you zoom in on the left side of the second picture, you can also recognize the majestic contours of the Wawel Castle, another architectural gem of Krakow.

Now let me show you the third snowy shot :)

Not so impressive, I know. I actually took this photo from the window of the apartment where we are currently staying. But there is something interesting about this picture too and instead of telling you right away, I figured it can actually be a fun theme for a little guessing challenge :)

The question is: At what time (rounded up to whole hours) did I take this picture?

You can guess in the comment section below. The fastest correct guess will get my full upvote :)

Good luck and have fun!

EDIT: We already have the winner! @hallmann guessed that I took the third picture at the midnight and that´s actually right! To be precise, I took the shot at 0:29 AM, which would round up to 0:00 so midnight is the correct answer, congrats @hallmann! :) Now why is the timing so special in this case? Well, because, as you can see in the photo, the sky was unusually bright that night and it almost felt like it was the daytime. It was snowing heavily and there was this weird bright light all over the sky. I was looking for some Northern Lights (aurora borealis) but I didn´t see any haha :) Yet, however, it was a night to remember and I am glad that I can keep this photo as a memory.

Thank you everyone for participating in the challenge, I hope it was fun :)

Bylo to o půlnoci?

Bingo! Bylo to o půlnoci :) Gratuluju! :)

I took this picture at 0:29 AM so, after rounding up to whole hours as required, midnight is the correct answer! Congrats! You might remember that there was this unusual light in the night here in Krakow a few days ago and it was during that night that I captured this shot. I am going to edit the post and let others know ;) Thanks.

I missed the deadline but just wanted to comment that the city looks pretty great, not too tall, not too small. I have a friend that I went to high school with that lives in the suburbs of Krakow on some quiet land. I don't think he can even speak much of the local language but he seems to really like it there. Seeing as how he cannot speak Polish, does the local community speak English pretty well? I just kind of wonder how difficult his life must be if he can't talk to most people.

Thank you :) Well, you cannot really see much of the cityscape from these particular shots, Krakow is actually quite a big city (almost 800,000 people) but it´s very charming. It doesn´t have the modern downtown with skyscrapers like Warsaw but the old town is just astonishing, there are so many impressive pieces of architecture dating back to up to a thousand of years ago... Krakow is also very green with dozens of beautiful parks. You can check out some more panoramic shots here, I took those from a hot air baloon, they look pretty cool :)

As for your question, I would say that most people here in the city speak (at least some) English. It´s a very touristy city so the locals are used to meeting visitors from other parts of the country as well as from abroad. Especially the younger generations speak English without any problems.

2am (insomnia)

Good guess, pretty close one but nope :)

The snow looks great... in the photos. But i wouldn't want to be there. I am not a cold weather type of person.

Well, I was born and raised in Central Europe so I am supposed to be used to snowy winters but after spending several years in tropical and subtropical climates, I must admit I have an issue with the cold weather now :D :/

07-00

Nope. Thanks for guessing :)

6 AM?

Nope :)

I think at 05:40, nice photos by the way.

No need to guess the minutes, just whole hours are fine :) 05:40 would round up to 6 AM, which is not correct... neither is 5 AM ;)

Then at 8 PM 😁

Nope, it was midnight :) See the edit...

8 AM?

Thanks for your guess but 8 AM is not the right answer :)

Info for other participants: @bodie7 guessed 4 PM but it´s not correct :)

Ale dal jsem do toho všechno :D

Já vím a vážím si toho! :D

these pictures are so cool, here in germany there is no snow, thanks for sharing! Krakow is really beautiful, especially the second picture is amazing!

Thank you Katrin :) Last winter, there was even much more snow here than this... It was so hard for us to get used to it after all those years in the tropics and subtropics haha :D

haha can imagine that.. what do you like more snow or ots of sun and warm weather?:)

Definitely sun and sea ;)

Damn, someone guessed already. I was about to guess 3-4 in the morning because there are no lights on in the flats and cars are covered in snow (which suggest some time had passed already)

That would be a smart conlusion but not correct enough :) I actually took the picture at 0:29 so midnight was the right answer.

Nice winter time images of Krakow!

Thanks for checking them out! :)

It is quite interesting and amazing to see houses covered in snow. It's not common in tropical countries so sights like these amaze me! Such wonderful pictures😍

Yeah, I have lived in tropical regions too so I know how exotic snow, ice and freezing weather is for you :) Btw feel free to join the challenge and leave your guess on when I took the third shot :) Many unsuccessful attempts here in the comments already so it´s not so hard anymore...

Woww, beauty, beauty. Since childhood, I have always loved snow and snowfall. Thanks for sharing your part of this story too! 🙏😊

I thank you for checking it out :) Looks like we are in for another decent batch of snow right now :D :/

The building roofs look nice covered with snow.

Yeah, Krakow looks nice under the snow blanket.

Your contest are always interesting @phortun keep the good work going

Glad to know you have been enjoying them :)

Thanks for keeping it fun @phortun

Wow lovely city

It is. You don´t want to join the guessing challenge? :)

4:35AM I guess

That would be 5 AM, which is not correct. Neither is 4 AM. Thanks for guessing :)
