Challenge - Stay home, share 3 travel photos (day 11) Killarney Mountain Lodge, Ontario Canada

in GEMS5 years ago (edited)

These are my 3 photos from our road trip to the Killarney Mountain Lodge in Killarney Ontario Canada. I have written a little bit about Killarney Ontario and the Killarney Provincial Park in the past but these are 3 of my favourite photos from the place we stayed when visiting there.

I am not sure why this place is called the “Mountain” Lodge since it is not located in the Mountains.... the nearby White Quartzite La Cloche mountains are several kilometres away. This Lodge is located on the shores of the pink granite outcrops of the Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. (Photo below)

It certainly does have a Lodge feel to it though.... constructed almost entirely of logs.

This is a photo from inside the main Building Lounge and Dining area. They have a restaurant and bar where you can order Take-out fish and chips and eat here by the Fireplace so this is where we usually decided to have our meals. Here or outside on the Patio overlooking the Georgian Bay and George Island across the Harbour.

One day when we were having lunch on the patio the server told us how that morning a Black bear swam across the Channel from the Island and walked right up onto the shore and across the patio. So to be on the look out for Black bears. Yeah we were pretty nervous about doing too much exploring that day. Although the kids really wanted to see that bear. They were not disappointed....

This is the view from one of the many timber cabins you can rent along the shore... perfect place to have a coffee or read a book, or paint. I did several paintings from here. Mostly watercolours and acrylics.

This is the view looking across the channel to George Island. There are also cabins on this island available to rent.

This Lodge has been here since the 1950’s and recently undergone extensive upgrades, additions and renovations after it was purchased by an Internet Billionaire in the 90’s....

The lodge opened in the 1950s ... when the only way to access this coastal region northwest of Toronto was by boat or small plane. In 1962, Highway 637 was built, connecting Killarney to the rest of Ontario by road. In 1964 the province of Ontario created Killarney Provincial Park, protecting a wide swath of beautiful rocky coastline, inland lakes, and granite cliffs along the Killarney peninsula. And Killarney Mountain Lodge became the place to stay for park visitors who didn’t want to camp, a position it retained for generations. This place is beautiful and would be a great location for a Hive meetup if @roelandp is looking for a beautiful place to stay in Canada. Certainly off the beaten path. See map below.

And that bear ?

Yeah, we did see that bear.

This is the only photo I was able to snap (from the safety of our car) as we were on our way to go hiking in the Park ..... It was just walking leisurely across all the front lawns. As if it was nobody’s business. Our hike was brief and we were on the lookout for more.

All photos taken by me with my old Blackberry.

This is the drive from near Ottawa.. it is also about 5 hours from Toronto.

Thanks for dropping by my Hive blog. I’m trying to improve my blog posts. I am not much of a writer. More of a Photographer and Artist. Thanks Hive for providing this place to share our Creative works.... and I sure am happy I have never ever sold a single penny of Hive.... unless it was to buy HBD. Better to HODL all your Hive in Hive Power. 100%

We had black bear in MI back when I was young and we Summered 'up north' as they say, here on Cape Cod, we haven't any bears but two Summers back a small bear WAS spotted. Now it was never really discovered how he got there as Cape Cod is an island with a heavy current canal and only two bridges to access it (as you know, having holidayed here) so IF it did swim the canal, WOW , but some think it might have got in one of the train cars that come in and out to remove our trash. I think it was darted and brought to a zoo or something.
I hope you are well @offgridlife

Yeah, it’s a mystery sometimes how bears end up in certain places. Maybe they hitch a ride in someone’s trailer ? It’s been known to happen. They get into places and slip out when nobody’s looking .... or maybe they can drive ? I am well.... trying to get lots of steps in the back yard .... 21,000 yesterday with Lola our Golden Retriever puppy. Thanks for asking. I hope you are well also. We can’t wait to get back to South Yarmouth and Nantucket ... maybe by August ? I am hoping ModeRNA has the Vaccine now.

Killarney Ontario is beautiful. I’m gong to say your post quality is defiantly improving. I’ve been enjoying your travel photography.

Thanks. Yes ... it is certainly in the middle of nowhere .... only one road in. I think most Americans fly in by Sea Plane. It’s a well kept secret. Best tasting , fresh, Catch of the day dock side fish and chips you will ever have in your life.

Those are the best kinds of places. I’m into fishing so it looks like it would be a great spot to get some angling done.

It’s big water beyond the channel.... need a pretty big boat. We just stay in the channel and rivers with our kayaks. I made the mistake one summer of getting out to far and wow.... Lake Huron can turn into an Ocean pretty quick. Just like Superior.

You can bring your fishing rods but If you like Pickerel (walleye) the Lodge is the place to eat. Sweetest tasting fish ever.

I’m a huge walleye fan. We finish for it around my place.

What are your 3 favourite fish to eat ? (Including shell fish)

I like Walleye, Salmon (smoked) and scallops

Salmon, any white fish and blue gill cooked riverside over a campfire.
