Mushroom Pumpkin Hunt and Carving Fun

in FungiFridaylast month (edited)

Instead of a fungi hunt, I went on a pumpkin hunt at the nearby farm shop.

I sought a suitable pumpkin to carve a mushroom-themed pumpkin.

This field used to have a huge plantation of giant pumpkins in assorted colours.

In the crate, there were a few different types of smaller pumpkins.

Some larger ones are on display.

But I prefer to pick mine straight from the ground; it is more fun!

Gosh, it is heavy!

I picked a few for the family to carve and chose the biggest one for my masterpiece! :)

At home, we all started the fun! . I began by sketching my design.

I had never tried carving anything other than a simple monster face on a pumpkin. With so much negativity in the world, I thought I’d carve something nice to look at.

Although I didn’t know how it would turn out, I figured it wouldn’t be a waste if I failed, as I could make pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie, and spicy pumpkin seeds to snack on!

I peeled the skin off the areas I wanted to be illuminated. I really enjoyed doing this.

I carved first, then removed the seeds and scraped the inside.

I thought this would help support the mushroom design so it wouldn’t break as I worked.

Then, I added a little window and door!

When I finished, I was pleased with how the pumpkin naturally cast shades across the carving when the light hit it.

I placed it by the doorstep to display, and I couldn’t wait to see it lit up in the dark.

I placed it by the doorstep to display.

I added a little smiley pumpkin inside,

We could not wait to light this up when it's dark!

It was getting a little dark, and we finally lit it up!

It added a magical touch with the sun setting in the background.

It looked amazing when finally illuminated.

It shines brightly in the darkness, with a cheerful baby pumpkin that looks happy and warm inside!

I love your creativity and the cuteness of your various creations. @clareartista showed this to my 8 year old niece yesterday and my niece was intrigued by it and asked how it was made.

Sending a creative hug ✨🎃🤗

Wow it looks so beautiful, you carved the mushrooms on the pumpkin so well ♥️

Thank you. 😊

This is gorgeous, @theworldaroundme - and aye; it is very good to tweak traditions into lighter ways, eh... Our Samhain traditions in Scotland involved guising rather than trickertreating as kids later called it. With a carved turnip: poor mum, having to scrape out such a solid root vegetable - for 3 of us! - and the guising part was taking quite seriously: less importance on the costume as the performance at each door, of a poem or song. 😇🙏👋 I still have strong positive memories of those times. Love seeing you create such beautiful and meaningful crafts

Thank you dear @clareartista. Guising is such a wonderful tradition! It's so cute to see children performing at the front door before getting their sweets; they have to put in a bit of effort. I can imagine how cute you and your siblings must have been. And yes, I enjoy tweaking things; it probably satisfies my imagination. Thank you for the lovely words and thoughts, really appreciated. Have a lovely day. 🩷😊💕🥰
