All my life, I've used the quirkiest tells to figure out a person's character. Yes, you can go by what they say, do, etc., but a much more exciting way to decode someone's personality is in their routines, the little things we tend to pay little or no attention to.
One of my tells has always been coffee.
I've always prided myself on liking my coffee strong, though I didn't always take it black. I was young and didn't understand how much more flavorful and nuanced black coffee is. Now, I seldom take it with milk. Only if it's unbearably strong or if I'm grabbing coffee at a cafe (a fairly rare occurrence), where I opt for a Flat White. But 90% of my coffee is plain black and extra strong.
I don't like toned down and I don't like compromise. I want to know I'm having it at 100%, whatever it is. It might be why I've never been able to stand cocktails or any of those other girly, diluted drinks. If I wanna drink, I'm having whiskey or wine or gin. Something real. A hard-hitter.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right, and I've always taken my coffee by that saying.
Does that mean I judge soft coffee drinkers?
Absolutely. I have little patience for cappuccinos and lattes, and while as a host I will offer you cream and sugar, I will judge you for taking either, trust me. Why? What do they mean?
Well, when you drown a shot of espresso in an ocean of milk or make it sickeningly sweet, you're robbing it of flavour. You're toning it down, diluting it, taking away its essence.
It says a lot about how you live life. I've never met soft coffee drinker who enjoyed life at its fullest otherwise. In my experience, the cappuccino people are cappuccino in all areas of life. Soft, blunt edges and diluted so they don't offend or make any kind of dent in their world.
Not a life worth living, in my book. Just like coffee, life can be bitter, hard, unpleasant, and too dark for your liking. There's conflict, there's being left out or isolated from your group, there's pissing off your boss, and arguing with your partner. There's danger. And thank fuck for that, because where else would you be, otherwise?
People who like sugary coffee seem to like sugary life. They avoid conflict and put on their rose-tinted glasses once too often. They shy away from big changes or decisions that might thrust them into the bitter unknown.
People who like milky coffee, likewise, have milky, watered-down lives. They don't make a splash, they go with the majority, they wear the same fashion trends everyone else is, they just try to blend in by toning down all the authenticity in their essence.
Is that fair on my part? Definitely not. But I don't really care. If we're ever out for coffee, you better believe I'm gonna be judging your order. The only way I can tolerate a cappuccino or any of these softer coffee types is if it's early and I'm planning on at least another strong cup of coffee when I get home.
Remember, you can't do life avoiding your heart going haywire from time to time. Whether from strong-ass coffee, heartache or the thrill of the unknown, it's gotta go a little crazy from time to time to remind you you're alive. Otherwise, what's the point?
Aw that is so nice, thank you! I don't think I could fit it in my luggage atm, but I'm sure we can negotiate. :D
Absolutely!
What an interesting take on the prompt.
I try not to be judgemental, but this analysis makes so much sense. 👏💯
I used to take milk and sugar, then I dropped the sugar and over the milk. Now, my daily coffee is black and strong. I'll occasionally have a cappuccino, which I prefer over lattes, but that's if I go to a coffee shop. If the price difference is only a small margin, then I think I prefer to treat myself or get the full value with all the extras that the cappuccino has.

Oh yeah, occasional cappuccino drinkers are exempt, of course. Even I'll have one once in a blue moon, though mostly when I've had my caffeine fill for the day or the other stuff's hella pricier.
Is that pastry? It looks like pastry.
Yes, pastry from my Lidl, my favourite place 😁
Amen to that! Lidl is a lifestyle, as they say :)) And I'm not sure how practical it is in the UK, but here, it's majorly cheaper than other stores, so who doesn't like that?
yeah, it's way more affordable than many of the other supermarkets here. People like to turn their noses up, and even carry a Watrose bag (when they don't shop there) and they all carry the same goods. I was introduced to Lidl when I lived in the Netherlands, and I got hooked.
The bakery was a great addition:)))
Same here. I don't personally see the point in paying more for (essentially) the same merchandise. Esp since the lidl house brand goods are often tastier than more expensive stuff you find in other chains anyway. Bakery's also surprisingly fresh.
I mean, if you think about it, it's good a lot of people turn their noses up. Otherwise, the trays would empty quicker. Might not be enough to go around. Let them keep their noses high. xD
When I moved to the UK, I used to go to their random aisle every Thursday and it took me a while to get over that addiction. 😆
Preach 🙌
I'm guilty of putting a splash of cream in my (not exaggerating) 4-6 shots of espresso... but that is only for my stomach. I don't eat until 4pm most days, so if I just dump pure espresso down the ole gullet all morning, I'll get a massive stomachache lol
Sometimes I do it anyhow though, compromise can hurt worse than a tummy ache when it comes to our principals in my experience haha! On the booze front, 100% with you! What is your favorite type of wine? I'm an Amarone or Tempranillo gal myself, although I do enjoy a Bordeaux or any red blend thoroughly too heheh
I adore how honest this post is, not many will post things that might tick someone off here. You're a G 😎
Don't you know breakfast's the most important meal of the day or something, lady? :P Nothing against pure espresso dumping, you understand, but another flavor alongside might make it even more enjoyable.
Or maybe I'm lying to myself.
Down with both Amarone and Tempranillo. All Spanish wines, tbh. I could say all reds, to be honest, but that's called modesty. Or flying under the alcoholics radar. One of those. honestly, anything red and dry works for me. I'm not picky and I can't stand pretentiousness. When someone's like "Oh I only drink '85 Shiraz from the blah-blah region", I know it's time to grab the bottle and get the fuck out.
Meh, fuck 'em. If they get ticked off by this sort of thing, then we probably wouldn't have gotten along too well anyway. Nor if they get ticked off, tbh. I want someone who flies into a full-blown psychotic rage, not ticked off. No compromise. See above :P
Wait, coffee is not breakfast?! 😦 I thought it was basically a soup, like broth for the mind? Hmmmm
Sounds like we vibe with the same kinda wine, I need something as dry as my shins in the winter but with as much punch as my scrappy son 🤣
This made me laugh so hard, YUP!!! I worked in fine dining for years and it was always the people who spoke in that manner who were the most annoying. AND they usually did not know anything about wine. They are notorious for asserting their superior preference right before saying something absurd like "All fine French wines are sweet!" OOF.
Full blown psychotic rage is so much easier to respect than whining/ complaining for me too. No passion/ soul to it= I has no ears 😂
I mean...if you put it like that...
"excuse me, I don't see that on the menu..?"
Isn't that always the case? The loudest mouths are the biggest idiots.
I am afraid to ask what you think about people who quit coffee altogether :)
Bad, bad things. :P
Ha no, actually I know a number of people who have quit coffee, I understand there's a lot of benefits. I just know I never could. But to be fair, I've a certain level of respect especially as it's quite addictive and can be very very hard to quit, so it takes a lot of determination, definitely.
Nice post.
Since last year, I have chosen to drink black and strong coffee without sugar, after I saw experiences where they mentioned that sugar took away the real flavor of coffee, and it was true, I confess that at first it took me a little getting used to it, but I started to appreciate the real flavor of coffee, and that's why my coffees are without sugar. Although, a latte once in a while is not bad for me😊.
Waoooo love this post. I'm addicted to coffee and believe me it's been impossible to give it up and because of health problems, I've had a double stomach operation and it's impossible for me to give it up and my coffee is fully loaded, I don't like it smooth or sweetened, that takes away its natural flavor. I loved the way you wrote this post. Congratulations my friend. Cheers with many cups of caffeine

A prompt about telling personalities between cups of coffee is something I never thought I'd never read about until today. As someone who prefers to drink milky and sugary coffees on a daily basis, I am honestly surprised with the accuracy of detail you've put into writing this. Silly little me would've wondered why I'd still end up falling asleep much faster drinking those types of coffees rather than drinking plain milk. I won't lie that sugar and milk does tone down the taste of coffee, but I'm still trying to find my way around getting used to it. Hopefully I'll come back here soon replacing those drinks with the strong and pure ones. Salute for your creative mindset!
😁 Loved to read this!
I drink Cappuccinos only after I already had a few black ones and don't want to buzz even more all over the place, or if they replace a Snack...:)
Well, this is a good chapter of coffee epistemology, hehe. I love your approach. Life offers us different scenarios to be who we are; a strong spirit, an old soul, I believe, chooses the same coffee everywhere they go. A spring spirit, a young soul, I think still wants to taste and is probably not ready for strong flavors. Can you blame them?
I love this subject and I love the way you have approached it. I might have discovered something important thanks to your post! 🤗
Have a nice week ahead!☕️
