Wednesday Walk Challenge : Avenue du Parc, Montreal

in Wednesday Walk2 days ago

For this Wednesday Walk Challenge organised by @tattoodjay, I'm taking you to a beautiful spot in Montreal, on l'avenue du Parc which separates Parc Jeanne Mance from Mont Royal in the heart of the Plateau district.

Between avenue des Pins and Mont Royal street, the Avenue du Parc runs through two of Montreal's major parks, Parc Jeanne Mance and Mont Royal. This is Montreal's main park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (who also designed New York's Central Park), the city's green lung.

Parc Jeanne Mance, rue Rachel

My walk begins on Rachel street, which bisects Parc Jeanne Mance. This park pays tribute to Jeanne Mance, a nurse who co-founded the city in 1642. It's located at the foot of Mount Royal, where you can play all kinds of sports: tennis, baseball, football, running, etc. in summer, and skating, hockey and cross-country skiing in winter.

I really like this tree with its rather deformed trunk. I don't know whether it's due to a gall or something else. But it makes for some interesting shapes. At this time of the year, the Parc Jeanne Mance is being transformed 🔽. On the left, the American football pitch is being repaired. In the middle, the paddling pool and children's play area are also getting a makeover. And on the right at the back, the elements of the ice rink are being installed.

We cross Avenue du Parc to reach Mount Royal at the George Etienne Cartier monument. Looking towards the city centre, we can see the Mordecai-Richler Pavilion, named after the Canadian writer. Its restoration in 2019 caused a bit of a scandal in 2017 given its price tag (over $700,000 CAD) 🤑.

Turn your head the other way and you'll see the George Etienne Cartier Monument, dedicated to the Canadian politician who played an important role in the Confederation of Canada in 1867. The monument was designed in 1919 by the artist George William Hill. In fine weather at weekends, the steps are occupied by drummers until late at night. Dancing and smoking 😀.

At the foot of the monument, at the start of various trails, there is a sign showing the map of Mount Royal. I'll have to show you all this in a future Wednesday Walk, especially from the Chalet and Beaver Lake.

I really like this reproduction of Mount Royal with the relief and the main buildings, really cool. You can see that it's an ancient volcano, a very ancient volcano (around 125 to 135 million years ago). There 🔽 is the start of the main path up to the top of Mount Royal (233 metres high), perfect for cycling.

To get to rue Mont Royal, follow the tree-lined Avenue du Parc, where you can forget about the cars driving by.

Kong & Sumo

For those who know me a little, it's hard for me not to put StreetArt in my posts 😀. On the corner of Mont Royal street and avenue du Parc, Kong and Sumo's blazes caught my eye. Nothing out of the ordinary apart from their situation. How could they have made these letters. I'm impressed.

I hope you enjoyed this walk along Mont Royal Avenue through two of Montreal's major downtown parks. Happy Wednesday Walk Challenge to all.

Keep up the great work 💪

Happy #wednesdaywalk 👍 beautiful park. I too like the Mount Royal relief. Nice lettering by Kong and Sumo. I always wonder about this type of street art 🤔 do you think this was traditional graffiti done clandestinely or allowed by the building owners?

I think it's completely illegal, done at night by accessing the roof and then leaving these huge letters... The owner must be happy in the morning to see that 😅
