A Wednesday Walk for the Dreemport challenge

My Wednesday Walk post for @tattoodjay and @elizacheng with #makemesmile comes about with encouragement from @dreemsteem and her #dreemportchallenge.

Once again I am not out hiking around, but instead can show you a few of the photos that I was able to take around my yard from the seat of my mobility scooter.

In the 20 years I have lived here in the woods I have seen lots of wildlife, but looking out yesterday and seeing three chickens under my bird feeder was a first!

img_0.6769948266794658.jpg

I have seen deer, raccoons, beavers, possums, river otters, fox, coyotes and tons of different birds, including wild turkeys, but never hens happily pecking away at the seeds that had fallen under the bird feeder.

img_0.7094228737912026.jpg

I made a phone call and it seems they belong to a neighbor down the road. They were quite a ways from home and it was terribly hot out today, so I gave them some water and they all had a drink.

img_0.5632462856298744.jpg

img_0.1446781988891739.jpg

Now that they know that there are easy treats under the feeder I hope they wander back this way again! And I wish them well avoiding all the dangers that lurk in the woods!

Petunias

It's taken constant watering but my flowers are all doing well. This Mandevilla is doing splendid this year and sending out lots of new growth. In the past I have killed them each time I have tried to grow them, so I am really pleased that the two I have growing this year seem so happy.

img_0.04100717402790772.jpg

img_0.7020667560644498.jpg

I have 3 chrysanthemums that are just beginning to bloom. They are all loaded with buds. This is the only one that has opened enough that I can be sure what color it is going to be.

img_0.616138934948238.jpg

img_0.1653034144855379.jpg

The basil and parsley that I planted from seed last month are growing nicely and I replanted some lettuce seeds.

img_0.8815815924305678.jpg

img_0.4172574169412606.jpg

I'm still hopeful that I can have a homegrown salad from my own pot of lettuce growing on the deck. I had a lovely pot full that was eaten off just about the time it was ready to pick. I was blaming the squirrels for eating my lettuce until I went back on the security camera and saw that the culprit was a big fat woodchuck that came up on my deck and happily ate every leaf.
Wouldn't you think that with an entire woods full of green leaves to eat he should leave my pots alone?

Awww! How lovely of you to take care of these lost hens. It just shows how human you are to have cared enough to give them grains and water and don't be surprised when they do come back for some more. Who doesn't like where they are treated nicely?

Beautiful garden you have too and your plants are doing so great. @dreemport brought me to your post. Keep the in flowing.

I'm not sure the hens were lost. I think they were out on their daily wander and just got further from home than usual. They go back to their coop at night and roost there, so it seems like they know where they are. They were just out visiting I guess, but they seemed glad for a drink. There is a creek in my yard and I was thinking how funny it would look to glance out and see chickens drinking from the creek.

It's going to be another hot day today here. My flowers seem to like it as long as I give them plenty of water. Thanks for stopping by! It's been fun to meet new dreemport friends.

Wow, I don't know why but I find myself always feeling excited to read your entry posts for the challenge

Luckily for me again, I got your post on my curation list at @dreemport so here I am enjoying the view of your beautiful surroundings from my phone 😃

Those chickens look so relaxed with your environs, I think they will surely come back since they found a caring neighbor 😂 you did a nice thing there ma'am.

Those flowers are so beautiful and growing so fine, I hope they keep growing so you don't kill them again 🤣

Nice walk from you ma'am, all the best with last challenge..... I loved all your entries 😊

Found my way to your post through @dreemport

I do hope the chickens stop by again and survive their walks through the woods!

My flowers all seem happy this summer. Sometimes growing conditions are better for certain plants and I seem to have made the right choices of what kinds to plant this year. The hot weather doesn't seem to be bothering them as long as they have plenty of water. I go out each morning and give them all a good soaking before it starts to get hot.

Thanks for stopping by and doing your part for the Dreemport challenge!

Your yard is full of surprises. Word must have gotten around that there's a nice lady in the house dishing out treats.
Three beautiful well fed chickens. Did they find their way home? or did your neighbour has to come for them.?
And indeed! How rude of the woodchuck to steal your greens when there are plenty out there. Maybe your variety is more to its taste.

Those chickens are certainly welcome to stop by! I just hope they start laying an egg or two in my yard. I understand that she lets them free range and that they wander around and then go home at night to roost.

I did plant more lettuce seeds and they are just now starting to come up. I put the pot in a place that I hope is out of reach! I may have to consider fortifying my deck!

I hope the chickens appreciate your hospitality and leave an egg or two every now and then to show their appreciation. The owner has a nice arrangement with the chickens.

Let's hope the lettuce will be out of the woodchuck's reach this time.

Do chickens like to eat tender fresh lettuce?

Erm, I think they might. Leave a few leaves outside and see if they go for them. 😊

I gave them some carrots yesterday, but they were not impressed. The carrots are gone this morning though, someone during the night must have enjoyed them.

I don't think carrots are their kind of food. But at least someone benefited from them. 😊

Oh wow, these hens are beautiful ! such wonderful feathers 😍 How funny is that you had a lot of wild critters in your garden but never hens at your feet ?😁👍

Aren't they pretty? It's the first time anyone nearby has had chickens. I hope they come back often, it would be nice to have chickens without the bother of taking care of them.

Oh Melinda that naughty woodchuck taking your fresh lettuce, perhaps next time hide it away, out of sight somewhere....

Those chickens look so healthy with fascinating colouring too, flower, always a flower close to hand to cheer us up on the most miserable of days.

Thanks, Joan! I didn't know !WINE was working again. I sold a bunch, but think I kept enough to use it just in case it came back.

I did plant more lettuce, and I put the pot up much higher. I will find out if it's high enough!

I have plenty, but I always hit reply before I think to add the command to my comment. I'll try to do better!

🤗 have a great day.

That must be exciting seeing a variation of wildlife from your own yard! On my side of the world, chickens are everywhere: our own nature-provided alarm clock. Haha.

Having my own yard with abundant greens and being able to make my own salad from those is a dream! Do Basil and Parsely need to have direct sun exposure?

Both basil and parsley need full sun. I had a big oak tree fall last fall. I miss it terribly, but the one advantage has been that now one end of my deck gets full sun. Like lettuce, both basil and parsley are easy to grow and they grow quickly.

These are the first chickens to live close by. I hope they survive all the predators.

Beautiful pictures 😍👍

I used to have a summer house up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Little Bay de Noc. I had my own pet woodchuck there until one winter, he was a little cold and dug a way into my basement (it was an old hand-dug basement) I had to use one of those live traps and then called the Ranger to come and get it. It was too angry for me to want to try to get it in the car. Surprisingly, he came after work. All that to say, they can be destructive little critters, but, until he did that, we lived amiable side by side. He lived under the Sauna House and I was okay with that.

Your Mandevilla is incredibly beautiful and so full of flowers. Everything seems to be doing really well up there. I keep pinching back my chrysanthemums to make more blooms and fuller plants, which looks like you did. In early summer, I let them go until they bloom and deadhead them until frost. Mine look almost at the same stage as yours. I love the smell of them.

I don't know what kind of chickens those are, but, they have nice plumage and are very healthy looking. (Read: Yummy delicious!) They are free-range, I take it. :))
I haven't had chickens, but, I do have a Mallard that is nesting under one of my cedar trees using the bird feeder. She did it last season too.

I hope you get your salad. It sounds like you deserve it! Fun post!

Good looking chickens. We've got quite a few in our neighborhood along with guinea hens and some Peacocks. They get relatively noisy once in a while :) But not as bad as the two burros that live just down the street.

Woodchuck. Sam learned about rabbits up there in your part of the world at my friend's place. The rabbits were eating the lettuce until Erv educated Sam about that part of his duties. He's pretty proud of catching one whether there is lettuce involved or not.

Beautiful photos. Thanks for sharing.

I never have wild rabbits that last very long because of the healthy predator population. I'm guessing the chickens won't last long either.

I think I am glad I do not have neighborhood burros. The geese that congregate on the sandbar out in the river are noisy enough for me!

Hello dear friend @ melinda010100 good afternoon

How beautiful are your chrysanthemum plants, I have always wanted to plant at home, but it is too hot, they cannot withstand the temperatures here

What beautiful visits you have had, but what you say is very true, those chickens are very exposed to the danger of the forest. I take this opportunity to wish you a splendid afternoon

This was a good year for mums. Other years they do not do well at all.

I do not expect these chickens to end up in a stew pot, but rather as dinner for some hungry wild critter.

that's what I meant, because of the dangers of predators near the forest

The chickens have very nice plumage!!!
Do you know what kind they are?
Beautiful photos @melinda010100!

Little brown hens? I tried looking them up but there are so many kinds that I am not at all certain. I was hoping someone here would tell me.

hahahahahahaha this had me laughing!!!!!!! look at those "wild chickens" hahahahaha

oh my gosh - can you imagine! hehehehe thank goodness that you found their owners though! Because I would be worried about chickens - they would become lunch FAST! And you are SO KIND for giving them water!!! awww honestly - that is so thoughtful. just thinking about how far from home they were and how hot it was!!! I love animals but I don't know if that would have come to my mind!!!

and i died laughing when you said you always kill the plants and how happy you are that they're blooming. i just thought back to all the years where I was the Grim Reaper of the Garden! hahahahaha

and then this year! boom- growth!

i love it.

hey! i'm so glad that you got some things growing for a salad! I remember you were saying it was late when you got planting and I'll be hoping for that salad for you too!!!

I'm putting your post into DreemPort right now! All the curators will read the entries tomorrow and be randomly assigned. Remember that each time your post is assigned it will go in different groupings. Sometimes maybe it's against very strong writers - sometimes not! heheheh it's a bit of fun that way!

thank you again for entering this week! I so appreciate you! remember that I don't upvote today - i'll wait til Friday to come back around with votes based on the winners!!! hehehehe

thank you Melinda! you definitely put a huge smile on my face today! :)

It seems that the chickens just rained free all the time and go back home at night to roost. I don't have hopes that they will have a long life oh, but they are certainly pretty to see wandering around! It. Does make me think that their owner is being irresponsible. We have Hawks and owls and Eagles not to mention coyotes and foxes. These beautiful girls would not stand a chance. Back when we were farming and I had chickens they had a run that they could go out into during the had boards around the bottom to keep animals from digging under and chicken wire across the top of the Run to keep birds from coming in and snatching one.

I was so disappointed when I went out on my birthday to harvest my lettuce for a birthday salad and found it all gone. I was blaming the squirrels and had no idea that the big fat woodchuck was the culprit! I will try again and see if I can grow a salad and keep it safe!😂

Some flowers that I try to grow do well some years and other years they don't do well at all. It is always rather unpredictable.

Hope you have had lots of entries this week!

we have LOTS of entries!!! hehehe last time I checked it was 14? yayyyyyy

that's so exciting hehehehe

and woodchucks.

it just makes you say.. WHY! lolololol

I think I saw you said in your post - why ?? when he has a whole forest to munch hahahahaha

cuz yours was in a pretty pot for him. LOLOLOL

Next it will probably be the chickens! They would actually be able to fly up on to the railing and reach where I have the pot of lettuce sitting at now. Do chickens like lettuce?🤔😂

i think chickens like lettuce when they are all a part of a sandwich.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Now there's an idea!

Looks like you have a beautiful flock of chickens. I also enjoyed seeing the flowers too. Thanks for sharing these pictures, really enjoyed seeing them.

I can't claim the pretty chickens, but was happy to have them visit from a house down the road. It's great to see you back here again! I'll be by to see what you have been up to!

Those chickens belong to someone right?
Or are they wild... is there even such a thing?

From chickens to woodchucks... sounds like food in your garden is yumzzzz ;p

What lovely pics - absolutely enjoyed them all

The chickens belong to a neighbor that lives down the road. She lets them free range and they go back home at night to roost. It was fun to have them come visit me!

Ahhh ok
I was thinking wow, these wild fellas look very huggable hahahaha

They do look very fluffy and huggable, don't they?

very beautiful color of the chicken!

Aren't they lovely? I think these 3 are especially pretty.

How exhilarating it must have been for you to carry out such endeavour. I bet it was fun snapping those chickens and giving them some water to drink. And i love the photos of those flowers so much.😊

Thanks! The chickens were certainly a surprise and not at all expected for my Wednesday walk!

Wow, how pleasant such a surprise must be. Surprises is what makes life interesting you know.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

Beautiful snapshots of your Wednesday walk right in your yard! 😄

Those chickens look robust and all I'm thinking is, they'll look good in a pot of soup, lol! Kind of you to give them some water to refresh themselves!

So glad your flowers are blooming. Are there traps for woodchucks? 'Cos we need those lettuce more than them! 😀

Have a great day!

Thanks!
Those chickens do look big and plump, don't they? I am hoping they think my yard is a good place to lay eggs!

I do have access to a live trap that would work for the woodchuck, but I am hopeful that it will behave itself and we can live in peace!

Beautiful chickens they look like twins

The two brown ones were very similar, that's for sure! The tail feathers are different colors.
