An outpouring of emotions straight from the heart.
I was driving happily to work in the morning. Spring has begun, the six-month gray and sad period is ending. You start smiling more, and then two friends say that Akira Toriyama has died. Even though I am no longer so attached to the brand (details in the second paragraph), I felt a strong pang in my heart. I immediately thought of the best moments we spent together - me and anime DB. Although at one time there were titles that excited me more, in the end the most important turned out to be Dragon Ball. He motivates me (at some level) to exercise and work on myself every day. He gives me a lot of positive emotions. It was thanks to him that I started writing (first as an editor on various sites about this anime, then by coming up with my own stories continuing the story of DBGT or DBZ while playing with Lego bricks). Maybe something positive will happen in my life thanks to DB. Its title made a lot of kids (and some parents) lock themselves in a room with a TV and watch DBZ together. Today, some people don't believe it, but when the anime was first broadcast on TV, the streets all over Poland were empty at 3 p.m. (or 4 p.m.). Anyway, all over the world too. When the final of the Tournament of Power was going on in the anime, people were reminiscing about their past with the old anime. Besides, has any anime been watched MASSIVELY all over the world on big screens? Brazil, France, Mexico, Poland and more. In fact, it was due to the fact that the FIFA World Cup coincided with the final fight with Jiren, but there have already been several such occasions. Dragon Ball is simply a pop culture icon. Just like Rocky, Alien, Rambo, Marvel, Batman, Superman, Harry Potter. Toriyama, Goku and Vegeta have motivated millions of people over the years. Some of them have achieved their own success and live at a high level.
This post may seem insensitive. Well, I won't pretend. A few years ago I put my finger on DB and tore this series out of my heart. She is still important to me, but I have already distanced myself from her in every field. I try to do this with every brand that is close to my heart. It's just easier in life this way. Not only in these types of situations, but in general. These things are very nice, my life without them would be grayer, my imagination would have fewer positive memories, etc. but these are just things. Products of someone else's imagination, things that are mainly intended to fill our time and bring profits to the authors. Will the brand continue to exist? Probably yes (games etc. are too much money for Japanese corporations), but I can't imagine continuing the manga. In the sense that something would appear after an arc that has recently started or is about to start (because some people speculate that we will also get a mini-arc of a fanservice nature). Recently, a new arc in the manga began, which we got after a year of completely unnecessary fillers. Previously, there was an arc that had a lot of good ideas and scenes, but due to a few idiotically illogical decisions, the hype dropped significantly. Moro was also broken at several points. The duo of Toriyama & Toyotaro could have done a great job with Vegeta, who had the Old Goat on a plate... But no, because the final blow must be dealt by Goku. The eternal flaw of DB. If it weren't for Black Freezer and the spectacular fatalities, I would have felt a strong distaste for this arc. Not to mention other problems and huge inconsistency in the form of Divine Ki, new forms, and the treatment of Ultra Instinct. In DBZ everything held together and I can justify most things based on the DB lore, but here? Error upon error, error after error. You can complain that I'm whining and that it spoils the sad mood, but that's how it was. The manga will probably end with the defeat of Freezer. It's hard to squeeze anything new into the short period between defeating Buu and the true finale of DBZ. They are unlikely to want to continue due to the author's death. Maybe there is a chance that we will get more series like DB Daima - spinoffs telling side stories or ones that were started in the anime but never got developed?
Toriyama was expendable in this process [of creating the manga], and I've been saying that for years. It would be much better to pass this on to someone who loves DB and grew up with it since childhood. And above all, he has a vision for it, he wants to expand the universe. Sure, Mr. Akira was and is a great creator in some respects, but there is a saying that I first heard as a teenager. Sometimes a title was successful by accident or achieved exceptionally high popularity. Then such an author is perceived as a genius, which is more or less true depending on the situation and the given title. And although I greatly appreciate Toriyama's skills in creating simple plots, narratives, starting certain threads, and, above all, extremely good drawings (and those depicting combat and the human body in such a way are particularly difficult and demanding for the author), in all he doesn't demand anything else. To put it mildly. And you could get much more out of DBS, especially since they created such opportunities for themselves together with Toyotaro. They had cool ideas that were later turned into the standard plot that everyone knows. Until I vomit. And DB still has the potential to develop them further. Just don't repeat the patterns on a 1:1 scale compared to the original, only making it worse + spoiling your own comic book even more than it was with DBZ. Well, back to the manga, despite some cool ideas, this one as a whole is extremely underdeveloped. Different people have given different reasons for this, but somehow Toriyama's ideas passed through a better sieve in the movies.
Don't get me wrong. It's not that I'm complaining, but there will probably be a lot of voices whitewashing Toriyama now. He was a great creator, his skills stand out even today, but I don't like distorting reality. While DBZ as a whole is better than DBS, this old anime is very, very overrated. The best that this title could give us has already happened. Now it's just about clipping coupons and making money on the same thing for the 2137th time. There's nothing wrong with that, especially when it's done by someone who's worked hard for it (and comic book artists in Japan have it really hard). Well, let's not call a goose a duck and a duck a swan. Nevertheless, Toriyama has entered the history of world culture in golden letters and is one of the most liked and recognizable "ambassadors" of Japan. He has achieved the success that most of us dream of and no one can take that away from him. Both in the world of comics and games - because Chrono Trigger, in which he gave a part of himself, was a huge hit. I hope he doesn't have to wait in line for King Enma for too long. And WSJ authors should learn to draw like Toriyama. Both those from better manga (OP, Naruto) and worse (Bleach). With Toriyama, everything is beautifully visible, and with you, sometimes you can't really see what's going on. And Super Saiyan. Something very simple and obvious, but how much it influenced the whole world and all people.
Goodbye, Master. Thank you for everything. Even the things I complained about. It partly improved my ability to articulate my thoughts, but most of all I have a lot of wonderful memories.

Jechałem sobie rano szczęśliwy do pracy. Wiosna się zaczęła, półroczny szary i smutny okres się kończy. Człowiek robi się bardziej uśmiechnięty, a tu dwóch kumpli mówi, że Akira Toriyama zmarł. Mimo że już nie jestem tak związany z marką (szczegóły w drugim akapicie), to poczułem silne ukłucie w sercu. Odrazu pomyślałem o najlepszych chwilach, jakie spędziliśmy razem - ja i anime DB. Choć swego czasu były tytuły, które jarały mnie bardziej, to finalnie tym najważniejszym okazał się być Dragon Ball. To on mnie motywuje (na pewnym poziomie) do ćwiczeń i codziennej pracy nad sobą. To on daje mi dużo pozytywnych emocji. To dzięki niemu zacząłem pisać (najpierw jako redaktor na różnych stronach o tym anime, potem wymyślając swoje własne opowiadania kontynuujące historię DBGT lub DBZ, gdy bawiłem się klockami Lego). Być może dzięki DB coś jeszcze stanie się pozytywnego w moim życiu.To jego tytuł sprawił, że mnóstwo dzieciaków (oraz niektórzy rodzice) zamykali się w pokoju z telewizorem i oglądali DBZ razem. Dzisiaj część ludzi w to nie wierzy, ale przy 1 i 2 emisji anime w telewizji, ulice w całej Polsce pustoszały o godzinie 15 (czy tam 16). Zresztą, na całym świecie też. Jak w anime trwał finał Turnieju Mocy, to ludzie wspominali swoją przeszłość ze starym anime. Zresztą, czy jakiekolwiek anime było MASOWO oglądane na całym świecie przez telebimy? Brazylia, Francja, Meksyk, Polska i nie tylko. Fakt, to zasługa tego, że mistrzostwa świata w piłkę nożną się zbiegły w czasie z finałową walką z Jirenem, ale takich okazji było już kilka. Dragon Ball to po prostu ikona popkultury. Tak jak Rocky, Alien, Rambo, Marvel, Batman, Superman, Harry Potter. Toriyama, Goku i Vegeta przez lata zmotywowali miliony ludzi. Część z nich osiągnęła swój własny sukces i żyje na wysokim poziomie.
Wpis ten może się wydawać nieczuły. Cóż, nie będę udawał. Już parę lat temu postawiłem krzyżyk na DB i wyrwałem tę serię z korzeniami z mojego serca. Nadal jest ważna dla mnie, ale już się od niej odciąłem na każdym polu. Staram się tak robić z każdą marką, która jest bliska memu sercu. Tak jest po prostu łatwiej w życiu. Nie tylko w tego typu sytuacjach, ale ogólnie. Te rzeczy są bardzo fajne, moje życie bez nich byłoby bardziej szare, wyobraźnia miałaby mniej pozytywnych wspomnień itd. ale to są tylko rzeczy. Wytwory cudzej wyobraźni, rzeczy które mają głównie zapchać nam czas i przynieść zyski dla autorów. Czy marka będzie dalej istnieć? Pewnie tak (gry itd. to zbyt duże pieniądze dla Japońskich korporacji), ale nie wyobrażam sobie kontynuowania mangi. W sensie by pojawiło się coś po arcu, który niedawno temu się rozpoczął lub dopiero rozpocznie (bo niektórzy spekulują, że dostaniemy jeszcze mini-arc o charakterze fanserwisu). Niedawno temu rozpoczął się nowy arc w mandze, który dostaliśmy po roku totalnie niepotrzebnych fillerów. Wcześniej był arc, który miał dużo dobrych pomysłów i scen, ale przez kilka idiotycznie nielogicznych decyzji, hype bardzo opadł. Moro w kilku momentach też został zepsuty. Duet Toriyama & Toyotaro mogli zrobić wspaniałą robotę z Vegetą, który miał Starego Kozła na talerzu... Ale nie, bo finałowy cios musi zadać Goku. Odwieczna wada DB. Gdyby nie Black Freezer i efektowne fatality, to czułbym mocny niesmak po tym arcu. Nie wspominając o innych problemach i olbrzymiej niekonsekwencji w postaci Boskiej Ki, nowych form, traktowania Ultra Instynktu. W DBZ wszystko się trzymało kupy i większość rzeczy mogę uzasadnić w oparciu o lore DB, a tutaj? Błąd na błędzie, błędem pogania. Możecie narzekać że marudzę, że psuje smutny nastrój, ale tak było. Pewnie manga skończy się na pokonaniu Freezera. Trudno wcisnąć coś nowego w ten krótki okres między pokonaniem Buu, a prawdziwym finałem DBZ. Raczej nie będą chcieli kontynuować ze względu na śmierć autora. Może jest szansa na to, że dostaniemy więcej serii jak DB Daima - spinoffy opowiadające historie poboczne lub takie, które zostały rozpoczęte w anime, ale nigdy nie dostaliśmy rozwinięcia?
Toriyama był w tym procesie zbędny [tworzenie mangi] i mówię to od lat. Dużo lepiej byłoby to przekazać komuś, kto kocha DB i wychował się na tym tytule od dziecka. No i przede wszystkim ma na to jakąś wizję, zechce rozwinąć uniwersum. Jasne, Pan Akira w pewnych aspektach był i jest świetnym twórcą, ale jest takie powiedzenie, które po raz pierwszy usłyszałem jako nastolatek. Czasem jakiś tytuł udał się przypadkiem lub osiągnął wyjątkowo dużą popularność. Wtedy taki autor jest postrzegany jako geniusz, co jest mniej lub bardziej prawdziwe w zależności od sytuacji i danego tytułu. No i choć bardzo sobie cenię umiejętności Toriyamy w kwestii tworzenia prostych fabuły, narracji, rozpoczynania pewnych wątków, a przede wszystkim wybitnie dobrych rysunków (a te przedstawiające walkę i ludzkie ciało w taki sposób, są szczególnie trudne i wymagające dla autora), to w całej reszcie nie domaga. Mówiąc delikatnie. No i z DBS można było wyciągnąć znacznie więcej, tym bardziej że sami sobie tworzyli takie okazje wraz z Toyotaro. Mieli fajne pomysły, które później zamieniono na standardową fabułę, którą wszyscy znają. Aż do zwymiotowania. A DB nadal ma potencjał, by je dalej rozwijać. Tylko nie powtarzając schematy w skali 1:1 względem oryginału, robiąc to jedynie gorzej + psując swój własny komiks jeszcze bardziej, niż to miało miejsce przy DBZ. No to wracając do mangi,mimo kilku fajnych pomysłów, to ta jako całokształt jest wyjątkowo niedopracowana. Różni ludzie podawali różne przyczyny tego stanu rzeczy, ale jakoś przy filmach pomysły Toriyamy przeszły przez lepsze sito.
Nie zrozumcie mnie źle. To nie tak, że marudzę, ale pewnie teraz pojawi się mnóstwo głosów wybielających Toriyamę. Ten był wielkim twórcą, wyróżnia się swoimi umiejętnościami nawet dziś, ale nie lubię zakłamywania rzeczywistości. Choć DBZ jako całokształt jest lepsze niż DBS, to stare anime jest bardzo, bardzo przeceniane. Najlepsze co nam ten tytuł mógł dać, już się stało. Teraz jest tylko odcinanie kuponów, zarabianie po raz 2137 na tym samym. Nie ma w tym nic złego, zwłaszcza gdy robi to ktoś, kto ciężko na to zapracował (a rysownicy komiksów w Japonii mają naprawdę ciężko). No ale nie nazywajmy gęsi kaczką, a kaczki łabędziem. Tym niemniej, Toriyama wpisał się złotymi literami w historię światowej kultury i jest jednym z najbardziej lubianych i rozpoznawalnych "ambasadorów" Japonii. On osiągnął sukces o którym większość z nas marzy i tego już nikt mu nie odbierze. Zarówno w świecie komiksu, jak i gier - bo Chrono Trigger przy którym dał część samego siebie, był gigantycznym hitem. Mam nadzieję, że nie będzie stał zbyt długo w kolejce do Króla Enmy. A autorzy z WSJ niech nauczą się rysować jak Toriyama. Zarówno ci od lepszych mang (OP, Naruto) jak i gorszych (Bleach. O śmieciowym Demon Slayerze nie wspominam, bo to nie WSJ.). U Toriyamy wszystko jest pięknie widoczne, a u Was czasem totalnie nie widać co się dzieje. No i Super Saiyanin. Coś mega prostego i oczywistego, a jak bardzo wpłynęło na cały świat i wszystkich ludzi.
Żegnaj Mistrzu. Dziękuję Ci za wszystko. Nawet te rzeczy na które marudziłem. Częściowo poprawiło to moje artykułowanie myśli, ale przede wszystkim mam mnóstwo cudownych wspomnień.
Dzisiaj się dowiedziałem jak byłem w pracy. Aż nie mogłem w to uwierzyć. Nie byłem jakimś wielkim fanem Dragon Balla, ale lubiłem tę kreskówkę. Żegnaj Mistrzu. 😢
Też byłem w szoku, 68 lat dla nas to dużo, ale jak na Japończyka to "całkiem młody". Tym bardziej, że niewiele było wiadomo o jego chorobie (nie był to tak głośny temat, jak chorobliwość Eiichiro Ody od One Piece, bardzo-bardzo poważnych problemów z kręgosłupem u autora Golgo13 czy mniej poważnego, ale nadal powaznego schorzenia Togashiego, autora HxH). Prosta kreskówka (co nie znaczy, że prostacka... Choć trochę szkoda, że Toriyama za bardzo uprościł DB przed finałem z Cellem / Komórczakiem), ale świetnie przekazała ważne wartości.
Been seeing the RIP Toriyama tweets and was even more curious who'd make the first mention about it in this community. Not really fond of the series but it was still part of my childhood growing up with anime. This man was a legend.
The advantage of getting up at 5.35 to go to work XD. For me it was the other way around, I was very attached to the series and games, but fortunately I have already cured myself of it and I know that it is only a "cool past", "a nice background for exercising at the gym" and "a nice time waster" (with which can turn off the brain). Nevertheless, the guy was and is a walking legend. It is known in every country where DB was broadcast during our childhood.
This is really sad, he was a legend that made many people become fans of Japanese animation. R.I.P Toriyama sensei 😔
