So I would like to thank @samsmith1971, @nineclaws and @holoz0r for taking up the challenge and trying to guess the purpose of the great-great-great audio equipment I showed in the picture in the post Mindless appreciation.
So this lovely piece is a cassette player, commonly known as a walkman:) I got this lovely little thing for Christmas when cassette and VHS tapes were still the main medium of entertainment. I am glad that there are a few dinosaurs who still remember these times:)
I admit that it was just vanity on my part - I was simply curious to see how many people read my posts from beginning to end, so I asked the question 'what is this?' without adding that a good answer would be rewarded:)
And the prize is a personalised drawing for the winner:)
The winner is @holoz0r! < fanfare >.
@holoz0r, I hope that as a expert portraitist you would appreciate my attempt at what is after all a difficult subject and I humbly submit myself to the judgement of a master here:)
Nevertheless - the superficiality of the body seemed to me insufficient to show your character. I couldn't just pose you and make a picture on the basis of which I would make a drawing, because we are thousands of miles apart. Besides, it would be a poor surprise!
So I used your profile picture (I figured since you use it on #hive and on your website - you just like this one) and my - unfortunately still tiny - knowledge of you to 'personalise' the portrait even more.
Recently, during our commentary chats, you mentioned how you like the film 'Arrival'. Not only that - you recently wrote a review of this film - I recommend everyone to read it. I thought to myself, 'Ha! It's a sign!'
As I know and greatly appreciate the work of Denis Villeneuve, and find the film Arrival insanely interesting too - I thought this was a good starting point.
For those who don't know the film, here's a short note from IMDB by Jwelch5742 (fantastic nickname, isn't it?)
Linguistics professor Louise Banks leads an elite team of investigators when gigantic spaceships touchdown in 12 locations around the world. As nations teeter on the verge of global war, Banks and her crew must race against time to find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. Hoping to unravel the mystery, she takes a chance that could threaten her life and quite possibly all of mankind.
So alien:)
This time - for a change - we are not confronted with humanoid, oblong-headed unknown or terrifying insectoid creatures dripping with acid. No. We are dealing with creatures that are mysterious in every way - their bodies, however squid-like, are hidden by an impenetrable fog, and their language requires even an excellent linguist to spend a lot of time understanding it.
And it was this language that I chose to focus on. Words and whole sentences even were formed by the newcomers in the form of circles, which the linguist was able to distinguish over time and further translate and communicate with the aliens.
On this page you will find some examples of the alien language created for the film 'Arrival':

For @holoz0r I chose the sign 'Human?', yes human, with a question mark.
I originally wanted to use predicate with a dot Human.
but I consider questioning everything and everyone to be one of my few virtues, which nevertheless makes my daily life very difficult.
Human?
Instead of bore you with my made up definition of human I will go with one of Carl's Jung quotes I very much like:
'Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.'
@holoz0r, I'm not questioning your humanity, don't worry. I'm simply opening the topic:)
I hope it was worth to go down the memory lane to get the picture:)
About the drawing
This is my third attempt at playing with drawing in the negative. I'm still learning, and my brain still cruelly itches when I squint my eyes trying to pick out the brightest patches of light. Sweat occurs on my forehead despite the cool afternoon. But! this experiment still makes me very happy. I will definitely return to black paper soon:)
I used two watercolour pencils this time - titan white and off white. At first glance there is not much difference between them, but I wanted to give a little more gradation to the drawing, and it was also interesting to photograph this drawing - sometimes the white caught the yellows and sometimes the blues:)
I hope you all will have a lovely week!
Yours,
Strega Azure

I am humbled and stunned beyond words by your efforts on this piece. You've captured the essence of the original image in an extradentary fashion, and triggered a twang of narcissism I didn't know existed until I saw this.
How many hours did you spend on this, portraying my terrifying visage?
I have to admit that it is difficult to draw someone I have not seen in person. I've been watching your streams, and like every person - you always look a bit different:)
Originally, I really wanted to use the photo with the hen because it is absolutely beautiful! (hen I mean!)
Plus the reflections of others can be seen in your glasses - which seemed very appropriate in the context of your interests.
Nevertheless - I have a weakness for the eyes as a part of the body in general (mainly because of their complexity, not 'because they are so pretty') and they give an intimacy to the portrait.
Narcisse away, this is your moment, enjoy it!
I was working through the weekend, couldn't possibly tell you exactly. But it was cool to get to draw a beard, not sure if I ever tried that before:)
My wife wants this to be framed. Do you have the original? We can pay for postage. I'll keep upvoting your stuff forever!
Not a problem at all, you can drop your address in peakd-chat if you can trust me this much:)
Upvote when you think my work is worth it, not as a thank you for picture. Plus - it is yours, you have won it, fair and square:)
I tried to message you through peakd-chat but I was peak "boomer" and couldn't figure it out. I followed you on Twitter with my "holoz0r" account over there if you want to DM (I couldn't DM you) and I'll supply you with the address of the place where I sleep in fitful bouts of time defined as "not enough".
Never worry! I've sent you DM on Twitter:)
I hope my package doesn't disturb your rhythm too much:)
Replied!
Still, I remain humbled. My wife hasn't seen this yet. I'll let you know her reply.
I am super excited then too!
Wow, that's so well done with so much life present! Lots of complexity and subtle distinctions present. Drawings in the negative are a favourite of mine. I was going to ask how long it took you but I see you gave an idea of how long, which to me, is a short time for the quality of work and life you've captured.
Thank you very much! I am exploring this way of drawing now, we will see where it will take me:) And yes - it takes quite some time, but I guess it will get easier in time. At least I hope so:)
I will reply to your 'longer' comment tomorrow. I've spend to much time with keyboard today. I will get back to you with fresh head:)
You're welcome! I see you have a new one up that I'll leave a comment there on.
There's something about this reversal (as I think of it) of tones that, if done well, is stunning in a way that working on a white/off white/light tone paper is not. I think there's a hint of a subtractive process in this approach, but I could be wrong in seeing it that way.
It gets easier and faster with practice; everything does. You've already got quite a handle on it. It's hard to see oneself clearly, so maybe you don't see it yet.
Always take your time and do what you need for yourself first. 🙂
I think you are right on the money here. It stimulates completely different parts of your brain, that's for sure. And it stimulates completely different feelings - at least for me.
It also has a bit of 'easy controversy' in it, if I'm honest. Big contrast is easy to spotted form distance, it is like using bright red in paintings.
I think you should choose your material and media according to what we are trying to create, not the other way around. I would say that some themes just like black background:)
I was trying to time myself working, but I find out it distracts me when I know there is timer out there, counting my precious minutes :D
It reminds me of carving, which is subtractive, and a reverse process than other forms of sculpture.
That's interesting. I'm curious as to the difference in feelings for you, if you are okay with elaborating on that.
I hadn't thought of it that way but I can see your point. I wonder if it has something to do with how the brain interprets tones or the like (of which I know nothing, just speculating).
I agree with all of that.
Okay, that's pure torture. I just got a flashback to a netsuke carver I know that uses a timer for each piece she's working on. She does that to ascertain how much time exactly she's spent on a piece to work out her pricing for patrons. That way of thinking makes me feel slightly nuts. I couldn't work that way. It doesn't seem to be your thing either. 😂
So usually, when I am drawing with pencil, especially from the nature - I would squint my eyes, so I can see better where are the darkest parts, and working from there. And with white pencil - doesn't work at all. With white pencil I close my eyes for longer period of time and then open them - and first thing that catch my eye on the image - this part I will make the brightest and most detailed.
It takes a lot of time and patience to get to the point where one detail is super-elaborated and super-sharp and the rest is slightly blurred - like the eye of the camera. And patience and time are things I always lack :D
So I still work quite superficially and force myself to go further and not grind one detail too long.
I just hope that in time I will have more time for my hobby's:)
It is all about how particular colours are perceived. Red and black on the top of white - will catch your eye immediately. Huge contrast like fluorescent green on black or dark dark green - same thing. White on the black nearly glow if black is deep enough :)
That's so interesting. I've never approached it that way. I like that.
I can't see any evidence of lack of patience in your drawings. I find the opposite is conveyed. Impressive. Self-discipline. I really appreciate you describing how you feel and experience this. It's given me a different angle to see from. That always fascinates me.
That's interesting. I'm thinking I'll play around in a spare moment or two. You're right about the red and black on white, am thinking how much that's used in marketing. High contrast has always been a fav.
Incredible work, Strega! seriously... blown away! Not much more to say... except I like this negative approach quite a lot!
Oh, and I was drawn by your Jung and found a rather interesting article that I thought you might enjoy reading. You can check it out here.

I am glad you like it @samsmith1971! I will come back to light soon, but for now I will embrace darkness for little while:)
Thank you for this article, I will defiantly look into that:)
I hadn't seen one of your drawings in a while and it's never too early to marvel at your creations, I find it fascinating how with just a few lines you have made the beard have so much texture, it turned out incredible.
I missed you so much! So glad to see you back:)
I thank you very much for your kind words as well:)
Thanks to you, for reminding you of me, hahaha
It's good to see your incredible drawings again💗💖💕
Thank you so much!
That was a lucky prize! Congrats holoz0r. The negative approach you took here looks fantastic! Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing with us on Hive and Dreemport.
Thank you very much! It is still takes long time to get drawing done, but I am getting there:)
This is incredibly awesome. I love your drawing of him. It just feels right seeing this.
Thank you @balikis95 very much!
☺☺
Awwwww congratulation @holoz0r you don't get to see such gift everyday and you did so great @strega.azure keep it up!
Thank you very much, I got to say - I had good material for drawing:)
You are most welcome.
Wow!! I have never come across such a beautiful work as this in life.. your drawing is amazing, I am so much in love with it.
🤗
Very kind of you Sir! Thank you.
Thank you for visiting my blog:)
The pleasure is mine, You are always welcome sir
Not a Sir btw, just so you know:)
(Strega is a female daemon from Slavic mythology)
Wow!!! Sorry about that.. I think I like the name.. it's going to be my second nickname 😁
🙌
Hands down.
those arent just some simple art there. I could draw that in my mind but when i am with the person, I am just drawing stick people. I wish i could draw so well too but i am just good with the musical instrument. Nice one there.
#dreemport
Thank you very much!
Unlike you - am terrible with instruments. I had been learning to play the guitar for a while, but I didn't have the patience and commitment to continue learning.
What instrument do you play?
😂😂hehehe
Just like me when it comes to drawing.
I play the drums, flute and little of the piano.. I can't compare myself with some expert I have met.. So I only say I know little of the piano
Multi-instrumentalist then. Very impressive!
BTW - You can draw! You did well here:

Awww... You dig up my past...😁😁😁
... Nice one.. I will follow you
I did! And I hope you will treat us with your music someday:)
I will ❤❤💯🙏
This is what I was talking about last time... using the white to uncover the drawing beneath the black paper. It's so hard to do... make that shift from laying down the darks on white paper to using white to uncover. BUT, what an amazing thing, to discover an manipulate white!
Love you using the different whites, for more tones. nicely done
I will definitely buy more shades of white. I actually really have to because my white crayons have almost run out 😒 That is actually main reason why I've added some colour to my last drawing 😄
Let me know what do you think!
You have very poetically described my despair 🤣🤣🤣
I keep feeling that I lack a bit of freedom in this kind of drawing because it's very easy to mess it up. As I'm drawing with pencil - I'm really tweaking and erasing a lot along the way, and at all stages of the work.
Here, when I've totally messed something up, I use a razor blade to scrape out the unfortunate line or a black ink-pen to hide the unfortunate lines:)
And BTW I tore up the first few sketches into tiny pieces because I was so angry with myself that I had done so badly. But I don't count those approaches (after all, there's no evidence;)
It's been said the Thomas Edison found hundreds of ways to NOT make a working lightbulb. We do not have any of the ones that failed: he destroyed them. but we do have his original working lightbulbs. So, yep... there is no evidence of your failures, except top say this:
Each very successful amazing piece of art you create, comes o the back of many intense and laborious hours of prior attempts. No one creates a masterpiece the first time sitting down, it takes thousand sof hours of sketches and blending, and color treatments, to get technique right.
You, amazing artist, have created some wonderful art!
🤗🤗🤗
Aww! Really appreciate all the compliments:) But feel free to give me constructive criticism, I would really like that.
I would add that even though I get angry if something doesn't meet my standards right away I actually enjoy the process itself very much. For me it is even more important part than final sketch.
To be fair - I should really keep my failed drawings, just so I know where I am at. But it feels so good to rip stuff apart sometimes:)
I'd would want to go on and on about how incredible this drawing look but I'm certain you know how I feel about all your drawings. They always come out looking incredible and very unique and this piece wasn't any different:)
I'm not to certain as to what this is but I'd make a guess. Does 'drawing in the negative' mean drawing with a black background?
Too bad I missed out on this puzzle. Would have loved a personalized drawing too🤧
Thank you very much @wongi!
I don't really know the professional term of drawing on black paper to be fair. I was trying to find one, but with no luck. I've used 'negative' term same way as it is used in analogue photography.
I know this is not a correct term, because drawing with white crayon on black paper is not simply and inversion of pencil on white paper.
Basically I make a positive drawing only instead of working on shadows - I work with light (white crayon), and the colour of the paper (black) serves me for shadows.
Don't worry about it, there will be more opportunities to get personalized picture, I promise:)
Okay, now I get your use of the term.
Okay, she promised. Do you know that promise is the meaning of my native name?. I guess you know now😅. I'd be looking forward to these times.
😘
Simply amazing, talk abut difficult on so many levels!
Hats off to you
