I made the decision to take a gap year before applying for university so I could work and earn some money. During this period, I worked at two different places.
My first job overworked and underpaid me, and at some point even started owing me the meagre salary I earned. So, I quit.
My second job was much better. I worked as a personal assistant for ten months before December rolled around. And with December came the festivities. If there’s one thing Christians in Nigeria don’t play with, it’s Christmas.
December of that year came with an unexpected surprise. My boss’s wife gifted me a wrapped present.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a beautiful new material to sew an outfit for the holidays.
I was genuinely touched. It wasn’t something I saw coming, as she had never acknowledged my effort in any way before. Maybe it was because I had informed them that I wouldn’t be resuming work in January, as I would be preparing for my university entrance exam. So, her kind gesture made me feel seen and valued.
The gift of a new material made my mind start racing with ideas. I began envisioning the styles I would tell my tailor to sew and the occasions I would wear them to.
Sometimes, it’s the unexpected gifts that leave the biggest impact.
Have you ever received a gift that meant more to you than the giver probably realized?
