“So, tell me about snugglecouragement, Amanda. I think big, strong veterans like me and your grandfather need to know about anything that gives people more courage.”

“Look at this,” Mrs. Velma Stepforth said to her husband, Mr. Thomas Stepforth on the Trent porch next door. “Look at that big, strong soldier Lee getting ready to learn from his itty bitty Ludlow cousin.”

“Well, Amanda and Gracie over here are friends, so this should be good!” Mr. Stepforth said. “Amanda doesn't talk as much, but that mind is right there with Gracie!”

“Well, see, Cousin Harry, sometimes people and animals need special kinds of help. There was this bald cat that had been in a fire next door to where I was in foster care. The family was in the hospital, and although the cat was OK getting food and stuff, it was winter and it was really cold at night. So, I asked God for a way to help, and left my window open, so, the cat was sent in and I kept it warm at night, and in the morning it left so I wouldn't get in trouble. It was doing the best I could to live, but it just needed a little extra warmth until its hair grew back. It was really a pretty cat with its hair, too, when it grew back.

“So, stuff happens to people, Cousin Harry, stuff happens to you, Cousin Maggie, Papa, Grandma, Eleanor, Andrew, George, Edwina – definitely George and Edwina – me, Grayson, Robert, big brother Melvin, big sister Vanna, Velma, Milton – definitely Milton – and Gracie, and also stuff happens to her Stepforth grandparents and her parents. They look like the kind of married people that stuff has definitely happened to. I think Gracie told me they were divorced because stuff happened, but then they decided they still loved each other and so they could let the stuff happen together and got back together.

“So, see, that's the thing, Cousin Harry. Stuff happens and people feel like bald cats. They are doing the best they can but it gets cold and they just need a little snuggling and a little encouragement, and so, snugglecouragement. Married people can give snugglecouragement to each other and I'm here for everyone else!”

“I see you giving a lot of snugglecouragement to Edwina.”

“Yes, because, see, Edwina is one of those bald cat people like Papa. You want them to keep getting better because they are big cats – like tigers because tigers are pretty – but also, tigers will eat you. Papa and Edwina are the kind of people that really can be unsafe, but they love God and they want to be like Him, so, they just need snugglecouragement. It doesn't matter how big somebody gets … everyone trying to do better can use snugglecouragement!”

“Well, thank you for explaining all that, Amanda – that was a lot and I think I should give you some snugglecouragement too.”

“OK – we can snugglecourage each other!”

“Aw,” Mrs. Stepforth said.

“I'mma need you to stop cutting all those onions in there, Vanna,” Mr. Stepforth said as he wiped his eyes.

“Thank you for being my snugglecouragement buddy again,” Mrs. Stepforth said.

“Yeah, we've been through some stuff and the world is cold,” Mr. Stepforth said as he wrapped his arms around her, “but we can snugglecourage each other and it's definitely better than dealing with life alone.”

“I do believe that itty bitty Ludlow is on to something,” Mrs. Stepforth said as she kissed her husband's cheek.
