While Mrs. Thalia Ludlow and Mrs. Maggie Lee were making preparations to heat dinner up on the barbecue grill, Mrs. Ludlow noticed that for the third time, her six-year grandson and adopted son Grayson had come to look at the ash pile that Col. H.F. Lee and Capt. R.E. Ludlow had cleaned up from the grills.

“What do you see, Grayson?” she asked him.

“That pile is not piling right,” he said. “There's big stuff in it.”

Mrs. Ludlow looked … and, Grayson was right.

“Ash should pile like sand,” he said, and then went and got a stick and went fishing in the pile … and then pulled out a big bone.

Mrs. Ludlow jumped.

“I knew it,” Grayson said. “I knew it was something!”

Then he noticed the look on his grandmother's face, put the bone down, and then hugged her.

“Don't be scared,” he said. “If it was a problem, Papa and Cousin Harry would have told us already.”

“He's right – Harry would have tagged it and bagged it already,” Mrs. Lee said with a smile. “Both of our husbands are Mssrs. Meticulous and would not have missed that – that's a big beef bone, nothing more. Somebody cussed themselves out for dropping that into the charcoals, and then was so ticked off they didn't clean up.”

“Right,” Mrs. Ludlow said, and bent and kissed her second-youngest on the head, and did not trouble him with the stories his grandfather still had nightmares about … of not knowing, as a child, what “bonfire” really meant, and the horror of realizing that picnics and postcards and bones and ashes and strange fruit on Southern trees all sometimes rhymed together … but not ever in the life of Grayson Ludlow, who had just found a big beef bone, and would never be troubled in childhood with anything more disturbing than knowing that sometimes, piles just didn't pile right.
