The word freshman is common for the first year students in the university or colleges and in some countries, the first year students in both junior and senior highschools are called freshmen.
I love the word because it actually depicts the meaning of the word, the name fits the reason it was named after.
When I was a freshman in the university, I introduced myself at an event using freshman. After I said my name and all other necessary things, I concluded by saying I am a freshman. It sounded odd to them because I was the only one who did the introduction that way, but it was cool though.
The freshman is obviously not gender bias, it describes both genders. Freshmen are not hard to figure out, they always act like their name. Maybe it's because they are just getting used to the environment but they usually behave and stand out.
